Iowa St embracing the Rural Iowa White Male victim, assisted by the Iowa GOP

It was a hot button issue back in the 80's when I was headed off to Central College, how would a young, white, middle class male fit in with the rest of the students? Would I have a safe space? Then the first night the guys on my floor all went out to Cleats and Spikes for dime draws and I realized they were all pretty much like me only from Oelwein, LaPorte City, Waukon, New Sharon, and Waverly.

Gasp!!!!!! The university wants to cater to it's biggest customer demographic.
How does this action improve their education? If your goal is to graduate from ISU and go home to Ida County you are set. If you goal is to take your STEM degree and work for a multinational corporation, or set out on your own, then you aren't being served well by this.

I guess if your goal is to get your STEM degree and work for a multinational corporation, maybe ISU isn’t for you to begin with.
Or if they have a STEM degree maybe they didn’t need that diversity group that was costing a million dollars every year anyway.

I aspire to the old saying…everything I really needed to know, I learned in kindergarten! It’s not that hard…be kind to others, share, and clean up after yourself. 😉

Counterpoint: it’s beneficial to be exposed to people and cultures you’re not used to while attending college.

Could likely help people in many subtly different ways that aren’t specifically listed degrees.

So you need to spend millions of dollars to do that. Can’t they ya know just meet each other and hang out? Social media has made it pretty easy to meet new people from anywhere in the world.

It’d be interesting how many on here think they’ve had this type of diverse experience yet the second you have a different opinion then them on something they call you a maga or libtard

Haven’t we established by now that social media is a poor substitute for real life interactions?

As a straight white male that grew up in rural Southwest Iowa its frankly insulting that Iowa Republicans think that we need to be coddled when we go off to college. Stop trying to make my people out to be victims!

What do you call DEI?

I remember when the GOP was all about “local control” and not mandating policiy via legislation.

The notion some chaw spitting dipshit senator from Eagle Grove knows better how the University of Iowa should run than actual academics is hilariously ludicrous.

"Local control" of a state university?

Nice try.

Good DEI is terrible.
Welcome all shapes, races, and pronouns into universities and trade schools based off TEST SCORES and MERIT. The country needs the best of the best graduating and using their skills regardless of what they look like.

I want the best pilot flying my plane and I want the best doctor doing my surgery regardless of race. White, Black, Brown, Asian, whatever I don't care. The last thing I want to hear before I go under is "The best doctor to remove your tumor is available but sorry we need to hit our Korean doctor quota for the week"

While j don’t love hiring/admissions practices that overemphasize diversity, it’s not solely without merit to suggest it should be a consideration, as humans tend to be creatures of habit and would be far less likely to do so without a push.

I would mention that this is only a very small part of what DEI is meant to do.

I agree diversity is good. It's why this country is amazing. My issue is Schools and/or jobs telling a highly qualified and maybe even perfect applicant they aren't allowed in because they need to accept a minority who may not be nearly as qualified.

And if that’s the primary factor for that decision, I agree. Where I disagree is the idea some opponents of diversity in hiring/admitting is the idea that previously only the best qualified ever got hired or admitted. Additionally, there is something to be said for the forcing the hands to some extent here. I’m glad you agree about diversity being good. Well, historically that’s been needed to be forced on us at times. Just look at the struggle to end legalized segregation for example.

Again tho - you’re only focusing on the Diversity portion here. What are your thoughts on the Equity and Inclusion bits?

Those don't bother me. If you do the same amount of work as someone who has been there as long as you you should be paid the same so as long as your hours are equal. Honestly if you think about it "E" and "I" should be easy as a boss so long that you aren't a complete miserable human being

"A push" you say" "Forcing the hands you say"? And who gets anointed to be the grand arbiter of the "push"?

We already have laws on the books the make discrimination unlawful.

De Jure discrimination is illegal, sure. De facto discrimination is still quite common unfortunately.

One would think so, and yet for many it remains hard.
