Iowa State is hands down the 2nd best team in the state. Been saying that since they beat us. True then & maybe still true now.

It’s been like this for decades. Even if Iowa State has a decent season, or Iowa miraculously breaks down like this current season, Iowa State is not even close to Iowa football.
Unfortunately Iowa and Iowa State have the same relationship in basketball but the roles are reversed.

If you're talking strength of program overall, I agree with OP. If you're talking about this season, ISU is the better team. Yes, the Big 12 is a joke of a conference, but they still beat us on our own turf and you can't ignore that.
Just like we beat Nebraska despite them topping us in nearly every important metric, the final score is all that matters. ISU finished the game with more points than Iowa so they are the better team. The good news is we'll get a chance to fix that in nine short months.
And Iowa State would score 80 on Drake. It wouldn't be close.
That being said, I can't help but think back to that 2018 game when Iowa State barely beat Drake 27-24. If not for a questionable holding call on Drake, the game very well could have gone into overtime, and Brock Purdy might have been the first Iowa State QB to lose to the Bulldogs since Alex Espinosa.

Whenever I see people bring up ISU almost losing to Drake (which isn’t wrong). I think about the ‘09 season and Iowa needing to block a couple FGs against UNI for the win. There’s no way those two teams should’ve even been close, especially with seeing that particular season played out.

I have mentioned before, Iowa has won 2 out of every 3 games in this whole series. Fry owned them for a long time and put the major beatdowns on them. Since Kirk took over the hawks are 14-11 which is a little less of a rate than overall. Many of us are a bit dismayed at how Kirk's teams have fared when favored over ISU. Playing tight????

We as hawk fans can forget Kirk's first 2 games against ISU as Iowa was not good but they didnt lose that bad. And since then there are about 4-5 games as fans, including the losses in 2022 and this year, where a better Iowa team just lost the game, made mistakes, etc after having leads. The 2014 game is another good one.

But usually Iowa is the better team over the course of the seasons and usually on game day but it doesnt always translate to wins against a pumped up ISU.

Iowa Iowa State game should’ve played out like yesterday ASU game. Pound the rock in the red zone and it’s a blowout by half.
