Iowa-Nebraska set to play twice yearly in men’s basketball as Big Ten looks to establish protected rivalries. Wisconsin chooses Minnesota.

More, from HawkCentral.com:

The conference is ...looking to create “protected rivalries.” The league already has said that schools that share a state — like Purdue and Indiana — will always play each other twice.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said the Badgers have asked to be paired with Minnesota in this arrangement.

“We were all given a chance to pick one and that’s the obvious one for us because of the border,” Gard said.

Gard said Iowa would be another natural fit.

“But then, who does Nebraska go with?” he said. “So you look at bordering states as a whole vs. maybe what’s best for you. Whether it was Iowa or Minnesota, obviously, when you have bordering states, for fans it’s always a big deal."

I would rather have been paired with Minny Wisconsin or even Illinois

The problem is Iowa is the only semi-natural team to pair with Nebraska, given the geography. If you pair Iowa with Wisconsin, then Minnesota is paired with Nebraska and that seems even more forced than Iowa-Nebraska. I haven't looked at the full list, but did they pair Illinois with Northwestern for same state rivalry?

Yes, that had already been established. The 3 in-state matchups were protected earlier, UM/MSU, NW/IL and Ind/Pur.

2 quick wins, nothing to see here
But Nebraska has won the last 2 matchups?

The games are always pretty close, Nebraska will be solid this year depending on who stays, after this year we will be awful, especially if Roby declares for the draft after this season (he is projected in the 2nd round)

Still think Iowa Wisconsin is the right one

Lot of history

Brust
Utoff
Okey

Fran getting kicked out

Actually not "always pretty close" as a quick internet search shows that Iowa beat Nebraska by 11 points in each of the 2016/17, 2015/16. and 2014/15 seasons along with a 28 point Hawkeye blowout in Lincoln in the 2014/15 season too. Going back a few seasons earlier, Iowa won by 10 points in the 2013/14 season and by 14 points in the 2012/12 season. Therefore, historically the Hawks have generally won by quite a large margin over the huskers. It's kind of been the same story in football the last 3 or 4 seasons too :)

Hopefully McCaffrey’s boy can help prevent us from dropping 98 on you guys again :)

Will Nebraska be solid enough to win 20 games and even get a sniff from the NCAA tourney committee?

James Palmer and Isaac Copeland are both returning after testing the NBA waters. Tim Miles will have his most experienced roster yet at Nebraska for the 2018-19 season. Huskers return 79 percent of its scoring, 74 percent of its rebounding and 75 percent of its assists from a year ago.

I would assume they will have a non-conference schedule to help them out too.

Not sure how good Oklahoma St is going to be, but that's a good move for both the Huskers and the organizers at Sanford/Sioux Falls.

Looks like the Huskers are going to play Oklahoma State in Sioux Falls this November

The same group that got blasted in the first round of the NIT and also had a soft B10 schedule. A very hot seat for Miles.

It's odd though for the Huskers. They continue to draw really well for MBB in their new area. That's huge for a school that historically speaking has had very little to celebrate in the 130 years they have fielded a basketball team.
