Republican lawmakers determined to bulldoze transgender Iowans and bury their rights will tell us repeatedly this is all about protecting the rights of women and girls.

Harmful legislation dressed up to be a noble cause. A Capitol classic.

But if this is all about women and girls, as they claim, why did the same Republicans yank away women’s rights to access legal abortion and force women and girls to face the health risks of pregnancy? Protect them but take away their basic right of bodily autonomy. Got it.

If it’s all about women and girls, why isn’t much more being done to provide prenatal care in rural areas? Why is there no paid family leave? Why aren’t Republicans spending more than a measly $1 million to tackle the cancers taking the lives of women.? If it’s all about the safety of girls, why did Republicans tell schools they’re no longer required to provide information about HPV vaccine, which can prevent cancer in women?

If it’s all about women and girls, why do we still have a wage gap? Why is there still not enough child care? Why turn down millions of dollars in federal summer food aid for kids that could have helped mothers struggling to feed their kids?

If it’s all about protecting women and girls, why support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, which enforces Title IX, prohibiting discrimination against girls and women in educational settings and sports?

If it’s all about women and girls, why did Republicans nominate Donald Trump, who was found liable for sexual abuse and has been accused of sexual assault and misconduct by multiple women? He’s the misogynist in chief.

Because it’s not really about women and girls.

What this is really about is fear. These so-called alpha male, rock-ribbed conservatives with God on their side are frightened of so many things.

They’re scared of strong women who control their own lives. Immigrants frighten them. They’re scared of library books, racism, factual American history and college professors. They’re scared a kid might go to college and learn about the world without the right-wing blinders lawmakers want.

Rainbow flags are like their kryptonite. Don’t even mention DEI, or they’’ll hyperventilate. And, of course, they’re deathly afraid of transgender people.

They’re a huge, scary threat — lurking in bathrooms and destroying women’s sports. There is no evidence any of this is happening in Iowa beyond cherry picked anecdotes. The worst thing these folks have done is to defy the white Christian straight ideal these lawmakers hold dear. So, they gotta go.

Rep. Steve Holt provided an excellent run down in support of this bill.

Everyone in Iowa has the same rights.

Tell us about the discrimination? Or do you mean slowing down indoctrination?

Does seem pretty dumb. A woman should have the right but I do also believe there should be a point when a mother can no longer abort the fetus. Only thing is that no one will agree on that point in growth either.

Pretty sure care in general in rural areas is lacking. Paid family leave has for the most part been up to the employer. Not sure why anyone should force a company to pay for family leave. It’s a benefit of working for one company over another.
What is a good amount of money to spend on cancer research? How many billions have already been spent on research? Does a cure for most cancers already exist but pharmaceutical companies can make more money by not curing someone that is ill?
If it’s all about women and girls, why do we still have a wage gap? Why is there still not enough child care? Why turn down millions of dollars in federal summer food aid for kids that could have helped mothers struggling to feed their kids?
A wage gap again is the result of companies. I also know of companies that have all women in higher better paying positions. There is probably more for child care all the time. The issue today is that both parents need to work to survive. That wasn’t the case for a long time.
Don’t know why you turn down food aid for kids but then again why is food so expensive for everyone, not just struggling mothers.
If it’s all about protecting women and girls, why support eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, which enforces Title IX, prohibiting discrimination against girls and women in educational settings and sports?
Why is this an issue now when men have been playing women’s sports up until today and beyond. Why hasn’t title IX been protecting women.
If it’s all about women and girls, why did Republicans nominate Donald Trump, who was found liable for sexual abuse and has been accused of sexual assault and misconduct by multiple women? He’s the misogynist in chief.
Not saying he is or isn’t guilty but it’s interesting that so many democrats were the ones that found him guilty.
I’d agree it’s sad that he was the Republican nominee but a large majority of politicians are criminals. Why are any of them allowed to be in the positions they are in?
Because it’s not really about women and girls.

Not sure what most of this has to do about transgenders. But I don’t understand the whole transgender issue to begin with.
If a person is unhappy being a male and wants to be a female, go right ahead. But do it on your own dime and don’t make a big deal when you can’t play a women’s sport when you were born with the physical advantage of being a male.
I was born a male and want to stay a male but dang it I should have been able to play female sports because I would have been good and could have received a D1 scholarship and possibly played professionally which would have made me happier in life.
Better yet, I was born believing I should be rich. The government should give me millions of dollars so I can live the live doing what I believe I should be able to do.

It’s almost like the government doesn’t care about anyone that isn’t rich or in politics.

I saw an estimate that there are 7,100 transgender people in Iowa.

Trans folks, drag shows, DEI - I don't understand why these things scare the GOP in Iowa so much. It's nothing.
The Republicans in this State want to it to be a haven for White Nationalists.
Their motives aren't some deep secret.

I guess they think they can keep those college graduates from fleeing to neighboring States by doing this?

Bold strategy.

Your idiotic rhetoric is one of the main reasons you lost so badly in 2024. Keep it up and 26 will be even worse for you

Elections. Have. Consequences.

That’s what the left says when they’re in power. And if full grown dudes with their package still in tact didn’t want to use women’s spaces and play in their sports we wouldn’t be here.

The sad commentary here is we need laws to stop crazy because we don’t have enough men in society to step up and handle this situation like men.

Libs of Maine censuring those who don't toe the line on this issue.

Are you okay with politicians that post pictures of students on social media without their consent?

From your article:

"Sharing images of kids online without their consent is a clear violation of the bond of trust and respect between citizens and their Legislators. There is a time and place for policy debates. That time and place will never be a social media post attacking a Maine student. Maine kids, and all Maine people, deserve better," House Speaker Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford) said.

According to the censure resolution, "the House finds the conduct of Representative Laurel D. Libby to be reprehensible and in direct violation of our code of ethics."

LOL - Another Todd Doorknob failure at journalism.

Fear of what? Lady men?

It's 100% about saving girls and women's sports.

"It's a remarkable double standard as there are public photos of this individual in many places, on social media and even some posted by his school, and so yes, this post went viral, but this was an individual who participated in a public event, who publicly stood on a podium and accepted a championship medal that rightfully belonged to the girls standing on the second-place spot," Libby said.

Also this.

House Minority Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham spoke out against the censure, pointing out that the state legislature’s ethics code does not mention online posts that members make.

Speaker Fecteau had a bunch of pictures of kids on his Facebook page.

It's not about posting a picture without permission.

There is a difference between the school posting the pictures of athletes and a politician posting their pictures to score political points. Schools have students/parents sign releases for their pictures to be posted. I don't believe Libby would be covered by those releases.

I never signed a release for pictures of me competing in sports to be published in newspapers.

Also kind of realized that when you are in public you are fair game for that sort of thing.

How old are you? It started happening after social media became a thing.

For a democratic party that made a point of chastising Republicans for what the dems claimed was a Republican party that was making an overly big deal about trans people, (because it actually affected so few people) are now making a huge deal whenever the Republicans bring up trans issues and policies. I thought it wasn't a big deal because there were so few trans people anyway? So, is it a big deal or isn't it?
