Iowa vs Rutgers

Going to be a great match for Stoll. Hopefully Carton is healed up and will get a match against Ashnolt. Is it Thursday yet.....
Go Hawks!

Like others have already mentioned, this is a great opportunity for Stoll to get some attention nationally. Ashnault and Perrotti are legit, but Iowa rolls.

Remember this meet is at 5pm..for those going or watching on btn+

I am completely dumbfounded as to why Sam Stoll is not ranked. His name doesn't show up on Intermat or Flo.

With all his accolades and success it just astonishes me that he is not listed...

Really wish they wouldn't hold duals on Thursdays (especially that early). Makes it impossible for any coaches/athletes/parents involved in scholastic wrestling to attend. Seems like common sense should prevail with some of this scheduling stuff.

Doesn't Rutgers have #17 ranked Richie Lewis at 157 pounds? Unless he is hurt, I see Cooper losing to him...

Yes they do. He didn't wrestle at the Grapple so I don't know what the story is there. Obviously it'd be a tougher match for Cooper if he does wrestle...but what the heck, I'm sticking with a Cooper win either way.

He isn't ranked because the one opportunity he has had to get ranked he lost the match. Stoll has to actually beat a ranked guy to get ranked. This Thursday gives him that opportunity. He's not gonna get ranked because he beat ISU and SDSU guy, needs to build the resume a little more.

Pretty sure these services rank other RS frosh that haven't beaten anyone ranked. And note he has a win over Brooks Black last season. Not that I completely disagree with your sentiment.

Smith is up to #6 on Intermat. Would be a huge win for Stoll.

Also thought Cooper looked more fundamentally sound against Pack. I think he is going to start knocking off the guys in the 12-20 ranked range. This is a rather watered down 157 weight class. This is not 133 or 184. Do we really think he doesn't have the talent to beat guys like Chad Walsh (Rider), Aaron Walker (Citadel), Dylan Cottrel (West Virginia)... These are the caliber guys he will have to beat to make it into or past the round of 12.

There have been crazier things happen than a guy of Cooper's talent level making a run at NCAA and sneaking on the podium. He has the ability to take guys down. He is strong. He seems to be in shape. His biggest issue seems to be sloppiness. If the Brands are about anything it is about doing things fundamentally solid. I have seen progress already in that area with Cooper and could see him making even more strides by the end of the year.

I was encouraged by Cooper's last match too, but he's got to start building his resume and he will need a solid performance at B10s. There's enough depth at 157 within the conference that qualifying for nationals isn't going to be automatic. It's go time.

As it relates to Cooper, who would have predicted two years ago that losing 14-12 to Marsteller would be viewed as a "bad loss"?

I've got two possible scenarios playing this out one

The worst-case IMO for Iowa is winning 20-17, winning six of 10, but dealing with bonus points at 141 and 165.
I think Cooper/Lewis is a swing match. Interesting enough, both were from Iowa Central at one point.

I think 24-13 is probably how this one will shake out in the Hawkeyes favor.

Iowa can really open things up from 174-197 to put this thing way out of reach. Those Rutgers guys at those weights aren't superstars, but they have pretty decent fight. Even Gravina got majored against Dean, but still kept at it (even scored the first TD legitimately).

This. Even if he makes it, he'll have a low seed that will mean he'll face top wrestlers early. Unless something amazing happens you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you hope he'll be contributing much at nationals.

A release was sent out to the media list from the Sports Information office yesterday.

Nick Nevills (Freshman) was ranked #6 before his injury and i see that the Arizona State Freshman is also ranked by Intermat. Neither of those guys have beaten anyone of significance either.....

Tanner Hall did beat Cabell and Tavanello this last weekend at CKLV..

Again all this ranking stuff is just that ranking. Some ones opinion.
Stoll can do it on the mat and if he doesn't that is how it is.
I have lots of confidence in Sam if not this match he will get there. March is a long ways away.

Nevills beat Shaw(Currently Ranked #7) & Dejournette (Currently Ranked #10) and only lost to Mardsen - He is going to be a very good HWT. Stoll had a win over Brooks(Currently ranked #14) but more than a few bad losses. I also think he is going to be a very good HWT.

Stoll was really sitting about the same as Micah Jordan coming into the season. I am not sure Jordan was ranked either to start.

There are many more other guys who still don't have a "resume" or wins vs. ranked opponents who are currently ranked now.

I just want to make it clear that I believe Stoll is an AA threat. I just don't think he has done anything besides beating Brooks Black last year to merit a top 20 ranking. He will get there, just haven't had the opportunities yet.

Just look across the board from #15-#20
Besides Tanner Hall who did well this past weekend in Vegas,15-20 were all NCAA qualifiers last year and because of that we given good preseason rankings. Stoll hasn't done enough to knock these guys out of the rankings and they haven't done so poorly this year to have themselves taken out. Win Thursday and Sammy is in! Go Hawks!
