I was at the game and give you my thoughts.
* I like the first unit a lot and they looked really good throughout (yes, I know competition was weak). But they are going to cay se issues defensively for teams, especially Keegan, Patrick, and Touissant. Even JBo’s defense was better it seemed. The press looked good with this unit.
* Patrick looked really confident and improved all around, as did Keegan. Both looked confident with the ball, they both looked strong rebounding, and played great Defense (Patrick didn’t get lost like he has in the past some).
* Touissant looked solid. Under control and his little 10 ft jumper looked nice. Still doesn’t seem confident out to 3.
* JBo knew he didn’t have to force anything and didn”t. I think Fran’s right to start him with this group to give them one solid threat from behind the arc. If Perkins was out there instead of JBo, not sure where the consistent 3 pt threat comes from?
* Not sure exactly how good Rebraca will be but he definitely is the most consistent and refined of the big men. I think he will complement Keegan and Patrick nicely.
* The 2nd unit really struggled in the first half - which Fran said they were obviously nervous - and why he started them in the 2nd Half, where they settled in and looked a lot better.
* Sandfort will play if only because he can really shoot. With Perkins, Ullis, and Kris, he will be needed to stretch the floor.
* I like the athleticism and potential of Perkins, Ullis, and Kris but I’m not positive they are ready for starter minutes. They play hard and will be valuable in rotation and hopefully will keep improving and become more consistent.
* Connor was Connor. One intangible he brings with the 2nd unit is leadership and calming guys down. Even Sandfort said Connor calmed him down at half and helped him settle in for the 2nd Half.
* Big O and Mulvey look like 11th and 12th guys. I’m sure there are certain games and match-ups they will play more but I think the 4/5 spots will be manned by Keegan, Patrick, Rebraca, and Kris in tighter rotations (at least at this point). Hopefully, those two will continue to grow with more experience if only for the size they can bring.
* FT shooting was great.
* Defense overall was much more intense and it’s noticeable how long and athletic and bought in defensively this group is compared to last few years.
* I am worried where the consistent outside shooting will come from. Small sample size of course but JBo and Sandfort are only two that I feel great about at this point to be consistent from 3. I wonder if there will be certain games Ash plays more if they need a lift from 3 and teams daring them to shoot? That being said, this group seems to have the ability to deprive and get to hoop more than in years past.
Going into the season, I feel like this is a bubble team right now and nothing changed my mind.
Sandfort looks legit. I also thought Perkins looked good. I liked his aggressiveness in the second unit. I think Rebraca will look better the more he plays with this group. There were a couple of times he just wasn't ready for the dish from Joe T. The more he gets used to how Joe plays, he'll do some damage. The way Joe was driving and dishing at moments tonight were impossible to defend. Filip and everyone else needs to keep their heads on a swivel this year.
I think at this point I see Perkins as an Eric May - he’s tough, he’s strong, he’s athletic and he’s going to be a Swiss army type of player that will bring a lot of positives. However, until he improves his shot and can be a somewhat consistent threat, there is a ceiling on how good he can be. I think he needs to be on the floor with JBo or Sandfort so that he can have room to utilize his positives .i guess i wasn't as impressed with Perkins. He wa 2-6 from the field and did not attempt a 3 point shot.

Totally agree. Until Perkins can prove to be somewhat of a threat in mid-range and out, his minutes will be limited.I just think that really good defensive teams are gonna get back on D and force Iowa into a half court offense. I think they will attempt to clog up the lanes and force Iowa into jump shots.
Can we hit the 3 and those mid range shots against those good teams? Can't wait to find out.
He was a pest on D. Fights through every screen.i guess i wasn't as impressed with Perkins. He wa 2-6 from the field and did not attempt a 3 point shot.
Yeah, agree with this and I’m sure there will be times they do. That is why Sandfort being a threat is so important to the second unit. I love Perkins mentality and tenacity and the other thinks he brings. If he can add a more consistent shot - doesn’t have to be great but at least more of a threat - he has all the other skills and toughness to be an All-Big Ten type player.Perkins is a guy that would benefit from playing with offensive threats. Actually, a lot of the reserves would.
When you have 3 guys that are hesitant to shoot on the court at the same time, it kind of exacerbates the issue.
I think Perkins or Ulis would look better running with the ones on occasion.

none of those opposing big guys can guard a center with perimeter skills, so yeah you give up 20+ points but you get a lot of it back if your smaller center can score on them.it looks/sounds like Fran is comfortable right now with PMac, Keegan & Filip as our front line
i think we are going to be in trouble once B1G play begins; all we have to look at is Michigan's, Purdue's and Illinois' center
The man d was pretty tight tonight. Joe T, Perkins and Ulis were being asked to pick up their man at half and sometimes 3/4 court. Even JBo extended 5 plus feet beyond the arc to stick his man. I don’t think JBo will be able to keep that up against better guards, but the other three will. Perkins and Joe T in particular were so fast and disruptive on D.none of those opposing big guys can guard a center with perimeter skills, so yeah you give up 20+ points but you get a lot of it back if your smaller center can score on them.
Two center bodies + part time Fiilip/Keegan/Kris all 6'8 is more than enough. Now if Mulva or JoshO get hurt, you do a lose a lot of optionality.
I'm glad to hear Fran is playing more Man defense and hopefully decent man defense. The Zone has just been killed by opposing teams 3pt shooting.
Yeah, I agree. I hope McCaffery doesn't follow his "line change" philosophy that he has used in the past. You never know when you might hit on the perfect combination for that particular night by mixing guys in.Perkins is a guy that would benefit from playing with offensive threats. Actually, a lot of the reserves would.

Agreed. It’s way too early to know or tell. Perkins is going to have to prove he’s willing to shoot and make enough to keep defenses honest.During the 20 game B1G season, opposing teams will have us very well scouted.
Remember last season how defenses sagged every time Connor had the ball, begging him to shoot? Right now, I think that happens with Perkins until he can prove he is a threat from outside.
I think opposing teams are gonna try to force Iowa into a game of half court jump shots. Can we hit jump shots on a consistent basis will be the question that we soon will find an answer.
Yep, I understand the quality of competition but last years biggest weakness now appears to be one of the bigger strengths. This team will likely look a whole lot different compared to last year. Much better defense and athleticism with questionable shooting. The man d was pretty tight tonight. Joe T, Perkins and Ulis were being asked to pick up their man at half and sometimes 3/4 court. Agreed. I have enjoyed reading the posts last night and today. Many thanks to all who have shared. There is some great post game analysis here.
Thanks guys.
Hawks win! Didn’t tell us much. Sandfort will definitely be in the rotation this year though
Hawkeye basketball is back and you can inject it straight into my veins!
I like a lot of what BATL is saying in this thread.....look, no sense to worry about what's going to happen with this team down the road. Especially after an exhibition game.....when there is no clue to substitution patterns?? Waaayy to early. The man d was pretty tight tonight.
