Iowa WBB 2024-2025 Season Thread

Possible conversation starters:
  • Do we beat ISU? I think Olsen can handle Ryan. All of our posts are faster than Crooks (and I believe Addi is taller / has more experience anyway). Affolter can match up with Brown as well. Will that be enough?
  • How do we fare against Drake and UNI? I’m not as familiar with those rosters.
  • Do we beat Indiana? I foresee many similarities between our roster tbh (both led by veteran Wing/forwards).
  • Will Feuerbach or McCabe grab the starting SG spot?
  • Will Addi perhaps get a chance at the 5 early? Might she have a bit of a breakthrough year now that she’ll have a new PG who isnt superhuman? Might Ava Heiden challenge for that spot?
  • Spicy topic: is there a chance in hell we pluck DeeDee Hagemann from the portal for that last roster spot? (My money’s on LSU but we can dream).

So curious to see which of the freshmen break into the rotation early. Hard to know until they get on the court with the vets.

I’ll be shocked if Heiden isn’t starting by year end. That won’t happen if O’Grady can break thru and average 8-10 pts a game but my money is on more of the same from AO. I would guess Heiden can average 6-8 by March.

I expect Mallegni to get minutes too but the logjam at the 2-3 may minimize them.

Ordinarily Guyton would def be getting reserve PG minutes but I’m not expecting her to see the floor much at all since she can’t workout til November at the earliest (could def see a red shirt year for her as well). I hope I’m wrong.

So a banal question. Who do you think will be the captains? Sydney for sure. Maybe Lucy despite being new. Maybe Jada but probably would need to be a starter.
Not banal at all. Does there need to more than one tho?

Usually it is all or most of the seniors. That would be Sydney, Kylie and Addie. But I don't see the latter two as having leadership qualities. And I can't remember ever being only one captain. So I said Sydney plus maybe Lucy or Jada. And you are right. Lisa's best teams had great senior leadership.

AJ is a senior and tbh she could be a great co-captain. She and Sydney would make sense.

I was wondering if/how often they get together and and scrimmage as a group, on their own. Sort of a "Captain's Workout".

Alot of fun around anticipating what the "new" coach do in molding the team her first year as head coach. She's got a tough job ahead but it will be fun watching her and the team this year.

Coach J contract? Is there a snag? Jan had said 5 years, but no announcement yet of term and signing. Or did I miss that?

I'm not sure how often the University voluntarily releases contract information when it doesn't have to. I looked quick and couldn't find any information on the new gymnastics coach's contract either. We can access it through a FOIA request, but I don't think anyone has prioritized that.

Basically I wouldn't read much into a lack of announcement.

Reasonable take. In her June 5 Gazette interview, when asked about the length of her contract, Jan said "I would think it will be you know five - that would be awesome - but we're working on that right now." I interpreted the vagueness in her answer as meaning the length of her contract was not a done deal. Her vague answer is what made me curious. Initial length of contract is an important item for recruiting, even though some ADs think in the NIL era that coaches contracts can be shorter.

Wyatt Crosher sent out his latest Hoopla, which included 5 players across the B1G that could have a breakout season. He included McCabe. Copied below.

Taylor McCabe, Iowa

  • 23-24 Stats: 8.2 MPG | 3.3 PPG | 0.6 APG | 35 3PT made | 46.1 3PT%
How does a player barely playing eight minutes per game become, to me, a clear candidate to break out? I would argue that Taylor McCabe did it by looking like one of the best shooters in the Big Ten despite such limited action.

The Iowa fanbase likely would have McCabe as the top candidate here, and for good reason. McCabe has made 55 threes on 124 attempts across 410 total minutes of action in her first two seasons. That’s a 44.4% efficiency on deep balls while averaging 5.4 made threes per 40 minutes. McCabe’s 5.2 threes made per 40 mins last season ranked third in the NCAA (minimum 20 games) behind only Binghamton’s Kaylee Krysztof and a little-known player named “Caitlin Clark.”

Another Iowa guard putting up a single Clark-level number should be considered a big deal, and that’s exactly what I hope Jan Jensen is thinking with McCabe. With Lucy Olsen entering the fray at point guard, it feels like McCabe could be the perfect three-point specialist to keep the Hawkeye offense humming as they enter a new era.

Despite the departures of Clark, Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall, Iowa has once again remained very stable, only bringing in Olsen and without a single transfer out. Players like McCabe feel like the reason why, as Iowa may feel more comfortable finding a new offensive spark when they have a potential three-point flamethrower waiting in the wings.

I noticed this morning that my season ticket renewal application is available in my online account. I have learned to check my account over the summer because I often do not receive emails from the Athletic Ticket Office about season ticket renewals.

Thanks for the heads up. I called the ticket office yesterday, and the person didn't know when they would be out but that I would get an e-mail as soon as they are available.

I am shocked how much the price went up. Two years ago, we paid $95 each, last year $145 and now up to $175. I thought the AD said last year that they weren't going to raise the price as much as they probably could for Caitlin's last year, because they didn't want to lower it the following year. Guess with the residual demand that isn't a problem. Still the best bargain around.

Nothing out there yet for MBB season tickets though.

Lucy posted a video on her IG story of her vacationing with McCabe, Affolter and Stuelke. Wonder if those are 4 of our 5 starters building chemistry.
