They should be well rested and Wisconsin isn't playing good ball but Fran struggles against teams that have a slow pace.

It's really up to the refs to call a fair game in Madison for Iowa to win. Which if history serves right won't happen.

What makes it difficult to beat Wisky is that they don't foul. LOL

I pray we get Gene Saratore (sp) and/or Bo Borowski (sp) for this game. They seem fair.

I think Kreiner may see quite a few minutes as Happ will be a difficult matchup for the rest of our bigs.

Heck, use Till for a minute or two on defensive possessions when they're in the 1-and-1 (and emphasize to commit the foul on the entry pass!)

Happ and Hayes are clearly wearing down - I would expect to see them struggle late in a close game if we can keep the game from stopping every time down. Any 2-3 minute end-to-end bursts that don't result in Wisconsin runs will be a positive for Iowa.

Also - checking in on usage and efficiency stats; I really hope we force Vito Brown to beat us shooting jumpers. He's not playing nearly as well and is clearly the 5th option on the floor.

He'll be the best dressed player on the floor in his suit!

I believe that Till is on the Baer program at Iowa. Just as when Nick came, all he asked Fran for was to redshirt his first year, to learn the system, and to get stronger. I think Till is on the same program. You notice he hasn't dressed for a game, and even the walk ons dress at home.

Wouldn't surprise me if these guys had their best FT shooting of the season against the Hawks. Isn't that the way these things go?

I'm just hoping the Hawks don't have to play Michigan in their first BTT game.

Both teams could use the hack-a-Shaq scenario with hayes and happ for wisky and Wagner/Pemsl/Cook for the Hawks. Although, Cook has improved as of late.

Thanks, I've been unable to follow as closely this year and hadn't noticed. Would be great if he can start to contribute. It's always awesome to see guys that want to be Hawks with or without a ride succeed.

It would be great, but I'm not counting on it. We caught lightening in a bottle with Baer. The chances that we were to get another starting quality player out of a walk on are pretty slim. Another reason that Baer got that chance is we had some holes on this team. It appears as if those holes, and minutes available for frontcourt players are going to be hard fought. Till seems like a great kid though, and I'll bet he finds a way to contribute.

Hack a Hayes!!
Hack a Happ!!

Against Michigan State, take a look at these FT stats:

4-12 Hayes (he is shooting 60% for the year)
0-3 Happ (shooting 50% for the year)

Put them both on the line; don't give them an easy FG.

Here is the box score for the Wisc/MSU Game: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore?gameId=400914946
Hayes plays away from the basket but I agree 100% on Happ. But I'd play him head up, really physical from the time he gets to the FT line and in. Bang him, push, shove him and keep him from getting good position in the post. You got to do it from the opening tip. Then let the refs call fouls if they want. Too many times I see Happ get the ball 5' from the rim with a guy on his back. That's too close. The only way to stop that is to immediately double team him but then it's going to leave someone wide open for the 3 pt shot.
Put Pemsl/Kriener/Wagner on him and fight him tooth and nail. He'll get worn down and frustrated.

One thing you can bet on is that Happ and Hayes will be fouled early and often even if there's no contact by Iowa. The shoulder drop into the defender works for home team stars.

I'd predict 2 fouls on Cook in the first 5 minutes as the B1G needs WI to get a decent seed in the NCAA.

I still think we've got a shot, but we will need to shoot lights out again from 3.

I agree; be physical, but don't foul just to foul. But, also, put him on the FT line, where he is not comfortable, as opposed to an easy FG.

I hope that goes without saying, but it probably is worth mentioning these days.

Does anyone recall if Fran has ever used "junk" defenses? I'm assuming we haven't practiced any, but I think it would add an interesting option for some of the lineups that Wisconsin will throw out (anytime they have only Happ OR Hayes in the game without a true 3rd option you can run a Triangle-2 and force Pritzl/Brown/Iverson to beat you). I'd be curious to know what Fran's philosophy on junk would be, as he likes to mix things up, but I don't think we've ever seen it at Iowa, yet. Just transitions between Man, Zone, Traps, and how high we press.

Quite a bit of difference. While Hayes and Happ are Wisky's "go to" guys that you really want in the game me "crunch time", you will never see Wagner in the game at that time and probably not Pemsl either although Pemsl has looked much better lately and Cook recently has looked like Stephen Curry compared to Happ, Hayes. As much as I love Baer, right now, I feel more confident with Pemsl/Cook than Baer at the line.

To further my point on the Iowa FT shooter a bit. Just looked at the stats. Pemsl shooting over 70% over last 8 games and Cook also over 70% his last 4 games. Baer meanwhile has only shot 33 % in all of B1G play! Granted he has only gone to the line 12 times in B1G play as not made a FT since the Purdue win! I've noticed how he never takes a dribble when he shoots hi FT's. I think he needs to take a couple dribbles RELAX more. He's such a fiery competitor he needs to settle down more at the line.

Seems like everyone here is forgetting that Iowa is primarily a zone team these days, and by all appearances they've developed pretty good defensive chemistry in their zones.

Wisconsin is a hot/cold shooting team, so we'll see how the zones work on Thursday. Wisconsin is also a very well-coached, well-prepared team, so they'll have a plan and they'll execute it.

The good news is this is the first time they'll have played Iowa, which may help us defensively. And we have an additional rest/prep day (theoretically).

I also always think it helps a team like Iowa coming off a win in which their primary scorer didn't have to carry the team. It just helps confidence and gives the next opponent more to think about.

Hawks playing for their postseason lives. Should be interesting.

How will the Badgers likely deal with Jok on defense?
Showalter is athletic and strong and pesky. I imagine he's on Jok in man, putting some length on Bohannon with Koenig. If Jok uses size effectively on Showalter, maybe Iverson (6'5") matches up with him.

I didn't watch Badgers play MSU but vs Ohio State they played exclusively man, and nothing I saw made OSU especially uncomfortable or off-rhythm.

And Wisconsin, vs OSU anyway, looked very guardable.

I'm optimistic.

Great, great call, OP. Wow! Happ goes 1-7 at the line, including two HUGE misses at the end. You nailed it, just like Bohannon. :)

he shoots 50% for the year; never in a million years did i think he would be that bad last night

Remember what happened before his last 2 misses? Pemsl fouled him immediately!

I'm not sure if Pemsl fully intended to foul, or if it was just a "I'm going for this rebound because a foul isn't a terrible thing".

Great Call by FranisdaMan..........but, actually
Jordan Bohannon and Nicholas Baer 'is the MAN'.

GO HAWKS :)

yeah, what a game!

I just thought that fouling them was a better option than giving them an easy 2 point FG; but at the same time, you don't want to get into foul trouble

Makes you wonder, too. Why was Happ in the game at the end? I mean, Iowa is going to foul Wisky's worst FT shooters
