And when that one person has an off night, we are very vunerable. Terrible ending to the game when Iowa missed about thirteen straight, including three airballs by Caitlin. Hawkeyes did not score in the last two and a half minutes. This may help the team focus in the upcoming games. K-State is a good team. Beat Iowa last year also. We were getting killed underneath by K-State.

I’ve paid close to zero attention to the women’s team since last year’s NCAA tournament run, but isn’t this why many were screaming for Bluder to explore the transfer portal or throw some NIL money at a big name in the offseason? So it wouldn’t be a one-person team?

Yep, why Bluder did no make a portal move for a big Center is indeed baffling. The need was obvious.

Unfortunately this isn’t a video game where you can just add whatever you want to your team. There are other teams out there vying for those same players, and some of those programs have a lot more money and a lot less ethics.

Then turn their asses in ("those programs") and force those players to come to Iowa anyways........

Not that hard.

Someone needs to step up, specifically another guard needs to be able to hit outside shots. But in the short run, just make the fricken layups when Clark gets the ball to them under the basket. Or actually take the layup when under the basket by yourself and don't kick it back out to Clark.

You do realize that there is almost ZERO NIL $$$ allotted for womens basketball, and almost nothing for the mens at this point correct?? People should REALLY find out the facts before they go after the coaches all the time.....At this point the NIL pool isn't that big to go around at Iowa. Also they courted the one big, that Lisa thought would be an upgrade to what we had on the roster, and reportedly she wouldn't even take our calls. Is what it is.....

Just to follow up. I think some folks are confused about "NIL". The $$$ Clark is getting, (some say up to 7 figures) comes from companys contacting her through her mom who was handling her affairs. (Clark just signed with Excel sports mgmt, a company that has a lot of big name pros to handle her as she readies for a pro career). Nike, Hyvee, H&R Block, etc.. all came to her to be a spokes person, because of her star power. These contracts have NOTHING to do with Iowa, or the coaches. Kate. Gabby, and Hannah all got some Tshirt deals. These ARE NIL in the truest sense. The way it was intended, where companies pay for a stars Name Image and Likeness. Companies can't just throw money at recruits who aren't at the school. (supposedly). I think most fans are talking about The Swarm collective. That is a pool of money donated by donors and fans, like us. To this point that "pool" is limited, and the "cash cow" or biggest pig at the trough is football. My understanding is that there was very little left after that for the other sports, especially womens. So when people say, "why don't we throw some NIL $$ at these girls" there isn't much left at this point. I believe the Swarm founder did try to contact the big post player Lisa was after, and she wouldn't return his calls. This has nothing to do with a lack of effort by Lisa, or Fran for that matter..

Bluder also said after they struck out in the portal at the end of last season that Iowa's mentality is to support players who want to play for Iowa and not to throw money at players who just want to get paid. Buying players in the long run will only lead to bad things, especially in terms of team chemistry. All of the players are making something and all have opportunities to earn NIL. As long as the team is winning and selling out games, the local businesses will get behind them.

I actually think this may be a better long term strategy. It's only a matter of time before mercenary players dilute public support for programs. Iowa is a small market and will have a hard time matching programs with wide open checkbooks. Seems unlikely to be resolved unless the athletes form some sort of collective agency to ensure some level of balance.

Just a comment on the Swarm, you can specify your donation to be used for Womens Basketball only at the $1000 level.

Interesting thanks. I joined the swarm at the base level. Don't know that I'll be throwing in big cash to help buy players as I get close to retiring, but wanted to do a little something to support the U......

The "Glue" couldn't buy a layup and she was wide open.

Iowa WBB players (not named Clark, she forgoes it) make a bit over $10k each in Swarm funds (IIRC). Thats decent. Athletes from many top programs do not get anything from their collectible (including Ohio State, Indiana, Maryland, last I heard, but things can change quickly).

However it pales in comparison to SC, where kids get paid $60k each. But there aren’t many (any??) other schools paying this much. I’m not sure what LSU does. They may just pay the top names what they command (a recent report said they offered the #2 Recruit in 2024 a deal worth $2.2M over two years — she turned it down, chose SC).

Clark was surprisingly awful down the stretch. I guess when you are the star, you keep on shooting, even if you have no confidence that it is going in. I don't watch women's BB enough to give advice, but taking the ball to the basket (Clark or others) seemed like what was needed. KSU wasn't exactly lighting it up either.

KS outplayed us and out coached us. They laid the blueprint on how to beat us. Let’s hope this is a learning lesson.
In fairness, they also beat the ladies last year - women started slow a year ago as well, and got better as the season went on.

the blueprint you speak of isn't complicated - swarm Caitlyn and force the others to make shots. On thursday they missed...and still were in a position to win late.

As another poster said, Iowa NIL didn't have much left for women's hoops, or men's for that matter, after the football transfers came in.

Thanks Barta.

KSU shut down the driving lanes. Clark always has confidence to shoot. Her shot was off because she was freakin exhausted because she was having to work so hard because no one else wanted the ball on offense. In order for the offense to be successful OTHER players have to look for their shot. Tonight against Drake other players were more aggressive and it paid off.

Wasn't her name Betts? She went to a west coast school.
Betts or Lauren Ware re the two I remember. Could also have been looking at Morrow, but shes a 4 so there would have been more about competing with Stuelke. I think Lisa for the most part would rather go with one of her recruits that wants to be a hawk and fits her system than bring in a mercenary unless its a clear position of need and the tranfer fits the system/team dynamics. I think that was the case for both Kylie and Molly
