Iowa's Transfer Portal Recruiting Strategy More "Complex" Than the Offense?

When the rules relaxed and transfer portal recruiting burst onto the scene last year, Iowa knew it had some holes to fill on the offensive line, at QB, and at WR. The defense was already stacked, in particular, at DB, and just needed some key offensive players to support them.

So while the average Big 10 team brought in 4-6 portal kids to immediately plug holes in the starting lineup, Kirk's brain trust sat on their hands and brought in just 1 transfer...a cornerback (by far Iowa's deepest position) from IAA UNI, to play behind the Big 10 defensive back of the year and 3 others. As expected, the nonsensical recruiting strategy failed. Iowa still struggled at QB, OL, and WR...relying on a mishmash of true freshmen and guys who just weren't ready, and the 1 grad transfer used his scholarship to fill a gap on the bench. Well played, staff.

Next year, the staff has an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. There are obvious holes in the lineup at kicker (where Kirk appears content putting all our eggs in the basket of a walkon high school kid), OL (we lose our top 2 OL), QB (have the worst returning QB in the Big 10), WR, DL (top DL going pro), and safety (lose both Koerner and Belton). As strengths, the Hawks return one of the nation's top tight ends. They also return their top Bowl game performers, the two Williams running backs who appeared just as good as Goodson, and have two 4 star RBs coming in next year.

So who has the staff offered in the portal over the past month? A D-3 tight end and a RB from Stanford? What holes, exactly, would either be filling? Aren't there 15+ positions where there's greater need?

So what is Kirk's transfer portal strategy, exactly? Maybe that's the problem with hiring your son-in-law as recruiting coordinator. He has no discernable transfer portal strategy other than...wait until a transfer calls us, then listen (i.e. Charlie Jones had to beg to walk-on).

Let's be clear, the staff's current strategy is not intended to be "loyal to current players" as some have theorized. If that were the intent, they wouldn't recruit elite high school kids like Xavier who can beat out upper classmen. A transfer portal kid is no different than an incoming freshmen who is good enough to play.

Let's dispel another another myth used to justify the poor transfer portal recruiting, the portal is "only used to fill needs" at a developmental program. The guys they are offering not needs guys. A QB who can complete 65% of his passes is a need guy. A seasoned OL is a need guy. A TE? C'mon man.

This week alone, Michigan State picked up a stud from Georgia. Wisconsin picked up an all-Pac 12 corner from UCLA. Ohio State picked up a safety from Oklahoma State. Is our staff on vacation?

Congratulations! Your post succeeded in being even more of an embarrassment than some of the OP's trolling posts. This one, though, brings up many valid points. Iowa is clearly neither aggressive nor seems to have a coherent strategy on transfers at all. Oh, and does your wife appreciate your middle school misogyny? Or do you live in the Handmaid's Tale?

MSU FB last year displayed exactly how powerful the transfer portal could be as they revamped their entire starting lineup, as well as ISU for bball.

Get a life.

Kirk's portal strategy is puzzling if you want to be generous.

All coaches want to win and KF is no exception. But some coaches actually have consequences if they don't make improvements. Kirk is the very rare coach for whom there are really no significant negative career outcomes no matter how the season goes. How great a position is that to be in; win or lose entirely on the terms that you dictate?

How did the portal strategy work for Indiana last year?

I think that Iowa's portal strategy is very simple. Recruit high school players. Fill some gaps on the lines using the portal (Coy Cronk, Jack Heflin). The offer to Hunter Nourzad is an example of that strategy. You may not like the portal strategy, but it isn't hard to understand.

Are you suggesting you know more than the staff? If we offer a TE, it means they have a world of potential. A seasoned OL? Do you not realize we’re pursuing a replacement for Linderbaum? And I wouldn’t worry about the defense period. Phil knows what he’s doing.

Thank you. Not hard to understand but good god some here are busting hemorrhoids trying to figure it out.
There's plenty to criticize staff for, but the approach to player development and roster management is pretty straightforward and has worked for them.

This is not that hard to understand. The very best guys in the portal, the ones that everyone wants, are not that many in number and most have a destination in mind when they jump in. Not all, but most. Just off the top of my head, the recent transfers that made an impact at Iowa include Heflin, Van Valkenborg, Charlie Jones. Coy Cronk was a starter but got hurt in first game of 2020. Others in more recent past include James Butler, Ron Coluzzi. I'm sure there are others I am forgetting.

It looks like they are in on the OL from the Ivy League, that a bunch of other schools are in on too. Iowa is getting a visit. That is great. Hope they can close the deal. Vast majority of the players in the portal are not any better than what Iowa has on the roster right now, and in many cases worse. Yes, I would like an upgrade at QB. I would have liked Keedon Slovis. I also would like a million dollars and to have played in the NBA. He likely had his destination mapped out well before he entered the portal.

Iowa will continue to look for guys in the portal that are good fit positionally and have an interest in playing in the Big 10. Otherwise they are going with their guys. And yes, you can look at Indiana as what can happen when it goes bad. Lauded for their use of the portal. Turns out, first sign of adversity in 2021 their team folded and quit. Michigan State used portal to great effect. Likely that Tucker backs off a bit as he focuses more in high school recruiting.

Absolutely. You did get that right. Of course, KF and his son did stand on the sidelines and watch the nation's 121st-ranked offense stink up the field for an entire season, and yet they still have no strategy to fix it. Same OC? Check. Same QBs? Check. Same offensive scheme? Check.

You and those who agree with you are fools. Bow down to KF and lick his boots no matter what. Hey, if that's what does it for ya, cool. But some of us would like to see Iowa put an offense on the field for a change, an offense that doesn't take 3 years to learn, and an offense directed by a playmaker at QB, not some statue game manager. And if you think the QB position is wide open for Labas--or anyone else not named Petras to win the job--you are incurably naïve--or stupid. Your call. But please pardon some of us for wanting Iowa's offense to join the 21st century and be as good as oh, say, Akron.

Well this is just embarrassing. Rather than fill a gaping hole at QB, the brain trust enters signing day tomorrow without even offering a transfer portal QB. By doing so, they are intentionally opting to stick with the 123rd ranked QB in college football for another year.

Meanwhile, countless lesser programs went out and actively brought in quality transfer QBs with superior numbers and upside to Petras. While Iowa rode its defense to win games, these mediocre programs with far less resources were proactive and picked up guys that will immediately improve their rosters. Teams like:

Western Kentucky
Cincinnati
UAB
Pitt
Mississippi
South Carolina
Washington State
K State
Washington
Arizona
Nebraska
Illinois
Cal
UCF
San Diego State

Each one picked up a portal QB who has already proven to be superior to Petras in every way. The excuse that little old Iowa can't compete for QBs because all are snatched up by elite programs with more money to offer is nonsense. The Power 5's worst program, 1-11 Arizona, got a guy who threw for 2,800 yards, 23 touchdowns and completed 63% of his passes in the Pac 12 last year. 7-6 South Carolina got Heisman hyped Spencer Rattler. Did they have a high powered offense I didn't know about? 6-7 Virginia Tech got a guy who threw 3,500 yards and completed 66% of his passes. Hell, even Big 10 bottom feeder Nebraska, at 3-9, dumped the school's all-time passing leader and got a guy who threw for 2,100 yards, 24 touchdowns, and completed 63% of his passes at Texas.

With all the successful portal recruiting elsewhere, Iowa couldn't pull a kid from the MAC to challenge Petras for the starting role to improve on the Big 10's worst offense? Competition is somehow a bad thing and Petras' willingness to attend Iowa on full-ride scholarship guarantees him a union card for life?

Similarly, not a single WR from the portal got a look? Why? We had one of the worst WR corps in the conference. Instead, the staff put the full court press on to recruit a small school TE to back up the Big 10's top TE, who's already on the roster? That's a position of need?

The coaching staff's failure to adjust to the transfer portal and NIL are to the detriment of the team. Unfortunately, rather than recruiting during the late signing period, Kirk rested on his new $7M contract and didn't put in the effort needed to make changes to the offense and fill immediate holes on the roster.

Petras threw for a whopping 1,800 yards, 10 touchdowns, and completed just 57% of his passes (most of them dump offs). But he's untouchable?

IT wouldnt matter if we went to the portal for a QB. It would have the same outcome

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find many, if any, who want a bad offense or don't want a better offense. If you believe that, you're an idiot.

That being said, I don't expect much, if any, coaching changes and I don't expect any huge changes in any of the strategy from the current staff. I'm not a million dollar donor with a bunch of pull in the program. What's more, even despite the crappy offense, Iowa won 10 games and I enjoyed that. Understanding that, I find my blood pressure and overall happiness level is higher if I don't get worked up about it like you do. If that offends you, well, you've just added another problem to the list of things making you unhappy. Enjoy.

And there you have it. It's now March. The vast transfer portal, with literally 10,000 available players with college experience, and ol' Kirk and crew only saw fit to reach out and grab just 1 player...a small school tight end, one of the deepest position on the roster, to come off the bench in spot duty playing behind the team's best player.

Stra-tee-jory. While some schools are playing checkers (drawing from the portal to fill positions of need), the Ferentz family are playing chess.

A grand total of 2 TEs have taken a snap for Iowa how is that a deep position with Laporta gone next year? Just a heads up a lot of the players are in the portal because they are not good.

No, no, no. The portal is a wealth of top tier talent that our coaches mysteriously refuse to grab. Not only that, we have our pick of the litter, so if we don't get many players from the portal, it's nothing but a glaring example of incompetence!!!!

How are people not getting this? Like it or not, our coaches are loyal to their players and aren’t looking for kids who have no loyalty. Freaking geniuses around here.

Agree - but loyalty isn't the word I would use. In the long run, he feels it's better to recruit and develop talent than it is to grab guys from the portal. If you go get guys from the portal, you lose guys to the portal.

He's rather have the guys he recruited and developed than some new guy. Not because he's necessarily just being loyal - he thinks it's the best way to build a program.

Based off of your post, thinking whatever you type will somehow change how KF runs the football program then…

My favorite is when Iowa law posts "objective " truths because he doesn't know what objective means. If he went to law school at Iowa then the quality of education there has wained since I was there. Let's see, Iowa has gotten Heflin. VAN Velconberb ( pardon the spelling, I went out with the wife tonight) and Charlie Jones in the portal but Iowa hasn't done a good job. Also got a starting O lineman in Cronk. Are there so many other teams that has gotten more? Name them Mr objective truth finder.

Iowa is consistently pretty good because of the way Kirk does things. Including his use of the portal. Some of you need to get a clue. The complaining is pathetic.

I don't know the stats .... sorry. But it seems to me that teams that dive into the portal are the same teams that lose players to the portal. I'm mean, there are only so many spots on the field.

So, KF like the guys he has. Hope he's right.

The Hawks are doing a masterful job sending play makers from their weakest position group into the portal without replacing them with better options.

Perhaps the only weaker position on the roster than WR is kicker. At a school where fans proudly state "punting is winning," it's unfathomable that Kirk would hand over kicking duties to a true freshmen walk-on kicker who went 0 fer at the spring game. Mark IowaLaw's words: failure to bring in even an average kicker from the portal will cost Iowa 2 close games.

It's painfully clear to the coaching staff that QB, WR, OL and RB are all ridiculously thin and all signs are pointing to another anemic offense. Without personnel upgrades, there is no doubt they will rank in the bottom quarter of the Big 10.

There remain hundreds of players in the transfer portal looking for a home. The vast majority could, at the very least, provide depth and at best could upgrade Iowa's weak spots. For the staff to not even attempt to bring someone in this summer is coaching malpractice.

You’re also the same idiot that complains about our DB recruiting, so I’ll take everything you say with a grain of salt.

Portal kicking our ass overall. Makes you wonder about the future. Hard to be a developmental prigram going forward. Gotta play the portal game well or get left behind!!

Hope kf Fran and barta all realize this soon!!
