Just got back from the UNI game today in Cedar Falls...where I saw Kevin Boyle, Brad Lohaus, Michael Morgan and Gordy Bohannon. That is something special for this lifelong Hawk fan and former Panther who had some of those guys on posters on my wall growing up.

Love UNI, and root for them as much as I do the Hawkeyes pretty much. A lot of kids from Iowa on that roster. Hard not to root for them.

ISU, on the other hand, is very easy not to root for, which I do on a regular basis.

Grew up a hawk fan like 70% of the state, but went to UNI and learned to like them while still liking the hawks about equally. Both are great programs, but there's just something about UNI doing it with overlooked Iowa guys. Love how Iowa locked up the top 3 Iowa guys this year though.

UNI beating UNC, ISU, and Wichita State this year was awesome, and I loved watching the Panthers take down Illinois State yesterday in Cedar Falls. And like the OP and others, I am a Hawkeye fan, but I love watching UNI football and basketball. The Panthers have Iowa kids all over their rosters in both sports, some of whom--as we know--would have looked good in black and gold.

Off and on over the years I've tried to back Iowa State, but their fans, coaches, players, and admin generally make it impossible. But UNI is a totally different story. I'm really pulling for the Panthers to win the MVC tourney. If they could get into the NCAA, they wouldn't be an easy out. Just ask UNC, ISU, and Wichita.

BTW: And those are some great Hawkeyes you mentioned, OP. I remember them all well.

Iowa has three starters from Iowa HS. Football also recruits plenty of Iowa kids. Naturally they miss on some, David Johnson to name one. Seems sometimes that posters on this forum concentrate on criticizing the Iowa kids, in basketball at least. And in both sports criticize the recruitment of Iowa kids rather than those with high stars which they seem to think are so easy to recruit from other states.

I'm another guy who grew up as a Hawkeye fan but graduated from UNI. I still root for the Hawks when they play head-to-head, but otherwise I always root for UNI.

I used to do the same but have since flipped to UNI in the head to head battle. One of the things that helped to make this happen was the ugly Iowa fan after the last time Iowa visited the McCleod Center. This was the game where Fran lost his cool and got tossed as the Panthers won by double digits IIRC. All I heard on this site was that UNI played "goon ball". I even re-watched the game and could only see sour grapes for Hawk fans.

You might want to invest in some glasses if you couldn't see some horribly one sided officiating in that game.
And this is coming from someone who's parents met while going to school at UNI (then Iowa Teacher's college) and who always cheers for UNI if they are not playing the Hawks.
Hope the Panthers can win Arch Madness and make the tourney this year!
