Is Bohannon's Medical Redshirt Guaranteed?

Seems to me that we've had some football players in the past that we were thinking would receive a medical redshirt and the NCAA denied their request. Maybe this is a different situation but are we guaranteed that Bohannon would be granted a medical redshirt? Could the NCAA step in and make a ridiculous ruling that would deny Bohannon a fifth year?

He doesn’t need to request anything. He has never redshirted, so this is likely just a “regular” redshirt.

Correct. Has to be a medical hardship.

Yep, and as long as he doesn't play in another game, it's pretty much guaranteed.

Now, if he decided to not shut it down, played against Cincy and his hip explodes, it would be possible, but far from a given.

What happens if he takes the medical and decides to transfer to Wisconsin. Is he eligible to play next year?

100% wrong. Basketball isn’t like football where they can play a certain amount of games and still use a regular redshirt. As soon as he stepped foot on the court during a game he lost his chance to use a regular redshirt.
Copy that. I did further research and believe you guys and gals are correct. Seems like a lot of officials are confused by the rule tho and that seems odd. YES the ffingg basketball one! I'm starting to hear whispers surgery wont help him out much for next year and he is going to tough it out. NO ONE KNOWS SHeT aBUoT JBO., but JBO.

I doubt many officials are confused since the medical hardship waiver is pretty cut and dried in the rules.

Now, fans? Absolutely many of them are confused.

MHW does not apply if you never used a redshirt?
Medical hardship waiver is the only option, regardless of the fact that he hasn't redshirted. That is because he has played this year. Football just adopted the rule last year of allowing them to play 4 games and still take the standard redshirt, but that is only football. Basketball still has the same rules it has had, where once he stepped on the floor in game 1, a regular redshirt is not available. The 30% games they have been talking about is to fit the criteria for the medical hardship redshirt.

He is not coming back.

The NCAA could simply deny the request. He did play last season and this season missing zero games due to his injury. Also let's not forget his last contact with the NCAA he was trolling them about stealing their rug. I say it's a 50/50 shot at best.

He is not coming back. He is going to have surgery and rehab will be a year.

He did miss a game this year due to his injury.

That doesn’t matter. In your hypothetical if someone is injured and played any games at all then they wouldn’t be eligible for medical hardship. His injury is well documented and his troll job with the ncaa has no impact. I’m assuming they’ve been in contest with the ncaa before the season.

I’m a little concerned if he can get the medical redshirt. Ask Drew Ott about that. My main concern is while he may not be 100% healthy, he not exactly on crutches or has an blown ACL. I’m a bit concerned Iowa is taking advantage of the rule then following the intent. The recent news his other hip is bothering him is important piece of info. If he has surgery on the other hip, I think that helps his case. With that said I don’t know if a guy who can play 30 minutes a games at 80% is what a medical redshirt is for.

this is just my paranoia and I know nothing specifically and wish Jordan the best.

Drew Ott played more than the allowed games. JBo hasn’t. Simple as that. This was researched before the season while Ott’s wasn’t.

Plus Ott had 5 seasons already. Getting a 6th is very difficult.

I wish I was as confident as you both. The decision is still a judgment call by some committee. I don’t think it’s a stretch to disagree that JBo is incapacitated and can’t continue after averaging 25 minutes a game. A second surgery on the other hip is a different story.

I thought Ott was a 6th year also but I can’t find the data. He played 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He never should have played after the elbow injury in 2015. I feel that is on the doctors but Ott paid for it in the end. Kirk seemed rather shocked the denial of a 5th year. If Kirk can be shocked by a medical hardship decision , I think anything can happen.

It's not a judgment call unless it's for a sixth year. Read the rules.

How big is this other hip issue I've heard chatter about? Obviously if there is something going on there he sits.

Considering JBo can't redshirt, it would apply. Just like it could apply for PMac if he sits the rest of the year (he can't redshirt either). Nunge will have a tough time getting one since he did redshirt already.
