Is Iowa ready for a new era in the Cy-Hawk Series?

Hayden lost 3 of his first 4 in this series. Other than 2005, the 23-3 game in Ames, with junior QB Drew Tate leading the Iowa offense, Kirk Ferentz has kept it closing, losing only one other game by 10 points.

Kirk Ferentz and the Hawks have lost 3 out of the last 4 in this series, all by a FG, with the exception being the last game in Ames.

In 1977, Iowa won 12-10 against a 8-4 Iowa State team, that was one of the best in the series. Bob Commings lost 31-0 against another 8-4 Iowa State team, and was dismissed at the end of the year.

In 1979, Hayden Fry and the Hawks started 1-3 in the early going, but beat 3-8 Iowa State 30-14 to kickoff a great 20 years of Cy-Hawk games in his era.

As we have experience over the last 16 years, with Kirk Ferentz, Iowa is 7-9 and most of the games ISU has won, were competitive, but Iowa's offense didn't get it done. The exception was 2011, when ISU pushed Iowa to a 27-27 stalemate, after 60 minutes in Ames. The game ended with ISU winning a 44-41 3 OT game.

Both programs were bowl programs in 2011. ISU had two bowl teams during the Commings era (2-0), zero bowl teams over the 20 years vs. Hayden Fry (0-0) and during the Ferentz (2-6) era, have the games (16 years) were against Cyclone teams that were bowl eligible.

The series has been very frustrating in the last 3 losses for the Hawkeyes, since the offense scored only 6 and 17 points, in two of those games (2012 and 2014).

It will be an interesting game. The average in Ames is Iowa 31, Iowa State 17, in games played in Ames, since 1981. Two of Iowa's Big Ten champion teams lost to ISU (1981, under Fry; 2002, under Ferentz).

The 15 year streak was BAD in the series (Good for Iowa). Iowa State was awful during that period, with only two seasons ISU had winning seasons, but no bowl bids.

Best games in series
  • 1977 win in the renewal game at Kinnick
  • 1998 loss 27-9 - it took a former Iowa player and assistant to lead ISU back from 15 straight
  • 2002 loss at Kinnick (all three games above were at Kinnick) - 36-31, first one played under lights
  • 2009 win in Ames 35-3, ISU was a bowl team, last winning season by Cyclones in series
  • 2013 win in Ames 27-21, Iowa kept the lead ... after being up 27-7 at the end of the 3rd qtr.
Here's to a blowout on Saturday ...
