Letter: Stop the cannabis dispensary

  • Oct 4, 2022

I was shocked when I heard that the Moline City Council was seriously considering approval of a special-use permit and/or rezoning to accommodate a cannabis dispensary at 2727 Avenue of the Cities.

I was dismayed in 2020 when pot head supporter Gov. Pritzker signed into law the ill-conceived legislation that the Illinois legislature had voted in legalizing the use of cannabis, but it was my understanding that Moline would allow dispensaries only in certain areas near the “outskirts.”

Now city officials are seriously considering approval of a cannabis dispensary in the heart of our city, only a few blocks from Moline High School, Roosevelt Elementary, and Logan Elementary, and two blocks from Optimist Park, a playground for children. More disturbing is that the pot store will be right on the path of some of our most treasured community events for the children and families — the annual MHS Homecoming Parade and Halloween Parade. Imagine all the children marching past the cannabis dispensary with its flashing displays and advertisements for pot, and potheads out on the sidewalk greeting the kids! What a great opportunity for the pot shop to tantalize our children!

  • Many other cities have been very disappointed, even horrified, by the clientele attracted to their dispensaries, and have even experienced impossible traffic backups due to an overwhelming number of pothead customers.
I urge the mayor and City Council to reject this attempt to bring the sale of cannabis into the heart of Moline.

“and have even experienced impossible traffic backups due to an overwhelming number of pothead customers.”

It’s a solid argument.

And also completely pulled out of his ass, lol.

There is one dispensary in the QC and there has never been traffic congestion due to it.
Have you been to Houston? That’s what it’s going to be like if they open a dispensary in the heart of Moline.

A worse criticism? Maybe "fake news" when it's actually 100% true.

OP knows all about that one.

But yeah, legalize it.

They’re tantalizing the kids with their reefer ads!

Now all the high schoolers are going to find out about marijuana!!!!
I know right?

I took this approach with my kiddos.

  • First and foremost pot (like alcohol) is illegal for minors (and for adults in some states)
  • Secondly, your young brains are still developing, so no.
  • Thirdly, when you're an adult you are free to make a decision on marijuana that is best suited for you and your lifestyle. I won't care at that point
Today my 24 year old uses pot recreationally (usually to relax after teaching those little monsters at her Title 1 school) and my 21 year old doesn't use because she holds a security clearance in the USAF. Personally, I don't drink or use pot, but I'd 100% vote for its legality in Texas. It's not the boogie man uber conservatives want it to be.

Educate your kids, don't villainize/criminalize it and they can walk by a "pot head" store all day long.

She's acting like it's a porn store.

Like seeing a Liquor store I doubt seeing a pot store would damage a elementary school child. Most probably wouldn't notice.

“Pot head” Pritzker. Lol.

$1.5B in cannabis sales in Illinois in FY22 and $445M in tax revenue for the state.

Keep fighting the good, puritanical fight, Iowa. At least the theists in the legislature and governor’s mansion are keeping the kids safe from the gateway drug. Right @NorthernHawkeye?

Ummmm, I seem to recall "it's for the children" as being one of Hillary Clinton's favorite lines when she was First Lady.

I cannot wait to make fun of younger generation for getting high legally like dorks. "Put this pocket protector in your pipe and smoke it, nerd." That's pretty good, right?
