ISU will be paying Rhoads $750K/yr thru 2021

I will be interested to see how Iowa State pulls this off financially. They're certainly going to lose season ticket holders due to their home schedule next year - their donors have pretty much tapped out by now with the aggressive facility upgrades (recently they have been issuing a lot of debt service and using TV money to rob Peter and pay Paul), and now ISU will either go cheap or they will double down and pay out their nose for a hot name. If the next hire doesn't work, ISU could be even more scorched earth than it already is.

Jamie Pollard addressed this. Whatever you may think of the guy, I think a CPA who's running the show might have a better grasp of the financial situation than an anonymous internet poster with no knowledge of the numbers. But that's just my opinion. Others may disagree.

You've never met a shady CPA? You need to get out more old boy.

But CPA's also do a lot of smoke and mirrors and shell game antics all the time. It isn't like ISU's athletic program is flush with cash.

$4.5M is nothing when compared to all the $99.00 mini-packs Pollard can sell.

I am sure isu will claim to sell around 111,234 season tickets next year and clone fans will fight to the death to defend it.

ISU owes him 4.5 million (or 4.6 million since it's prorated I believe) within 60 days

Actually, ISU's athletics program is in pretty solid shape financially.

This article reports that (after reviewing FOIA records), in 2014, Iowa ended $3.0M in the black with $105.3M in athletic revenue and ISU ended up $1.8M in the red with $66.2M in athletic revenue.

ISU increased its athletic revenue by $36.8M from 2004 to 2014.
Iowa increased its athletic revenue by $43.1M from 2004 to 2014.

I found it interesting that 7 of 14 B1G programs ran a deficit in 2014, 8 of 10 Pac-12 programs (2 are private institutions immune from FOIA) ran a deficit and every ACC program ran a deficit.

Finally, Oregon's FOIA response identified $193.9M in athletic revenue - outpacing the nearest competitor by more than $30M.

Thank you Phil Knight.

I wonder why Pollard hasn't received the criticism and questions for giving Rhoads a 10 year contract as Barta received for giving Ferentz a 10 year deal. At least Barta had something to base his decision on: two Big Ten Championships, two Orange Bowls, Top 10 finishes. After Iowa State upset Oklahoma State in 2011, Pollard went gaga over Rhoads and gave him that sweetheart of a deal. If I was a big time donor, I wouldn't be happy with Pollard putting Iowa State in a hole. I'll bet Pollard will never do a 10 year contract again and he better get this next hire right if he wants to stay in Ames.

Jim Tressel is the answer. Don't have to buy him out. He is proven and his name probably sells a few tickets.

He wouldn't lose games by being stupid like their pas coaches.

You could also right in nice buyout for when he leaves. The bean counters would love that.

Sure he had trouble with players trading clothes for tattoos but let's face it nobody would even care if it happened now. North Carolina had 20 years of fake classes and grades and nobody cares. We are in the Wild West era of sanctions.

Jim Tressel is still under a show-cause penalty and would have to sit out the first five games next year. He is also turning 63 next week.

ISU ain't gonna hire him.

Several schools were sniffing around Rhoads, particularly Pitt but also Illinois. There was every reason to think Rhoads was going to do well. Pollard would have been remiss in his duties if he hadn't done what he did.

Obviously, knowing what we all know now, Pollard wouldn't have done it....but the point would have been moot because Rhoads would have taken one of the other jobs, anyway.

I think you have to look at those numbers with a somewhat skeptical eye, because I think the way they handle debt service can be misleading.

One example: It shows Iowa had a bigger deficit (adjusted for inflation) in 2004 than ISU had in 2014. But I don't think anybody would argue that Iowa wasn't in solid financial shape in 2004.

Yeah but having an extra 750K a year till 2021 will hinder how much they will offer their next coach. Seeing more now of non Power 5 schools like Houston and Memphis upping the salaries of their coaches. Plus if next guy they get has some success means good chance need to up his pay or he could pull a Chizik and leave for a better job. One nice thing about Rhoads was you could tell the guy was pretty loyal to ISU and wasn't looking to leave. Iowa had limits on salary after Lick where they couldn't go after people like Bruce Pearl who would have listened if Iowa came calling because Iowa couldn't afford him cause of Lick's awful contract/buyout. For as much as clone fans would make fun of KF's contract well joke is on them because they had the worst contract in the state the whole time.

This guy is sitting at home on his pile of money (amazingly from 2 schools) telling Paul welcome to the club and enjoy the $

Anybody that thinks ISU don't have some big fish in their donor/alumni pool is kidding themselves. The idea that all ISU grads are hayseeds wearing coverall with a alfalfa stem clinched between their teeth is largely a fantasy still believed by anyone who hasn't been on that campus in the last 30 years.

The price of poker is going to go way up my friend. I hope the donors and season ticket holders like shelling out money. Gone are the days of cheap.

What do you think is cheap about being an ISU supporter? Do you have any idea what it costs to have good season tickets for men's basketball? Hint: One hell of a lot more than it costs in Iowa City.

I'm not sure how the footballs season ticket prices stack up against Iowa or other comparable schools; good tickets are probably about the same price, but ISU usually offers some discounted packages.

This. We have people donating $12,500 and sitting in the balcony for basketball
