It’s abundantly clear

College basketball is all about guard play. We need more quickness and athleticism.

Why should Fran go out and recruit athletic guards? Fran is comfortable where he's at, just maintain the status quo, win just enough to keep the boosters and Barta happy. There's no pressure to keep Iowa in the top 3 of the Big Ten if you never achieve that level to begin with. See where I'm going with this?

This has zero basis in reality.....let me clarify that I don't think Fran is perfect by any means, but to assume he has no passion, no desire to achieve more, that he only wants to maintain the status quo is simply ridiculous.

As evidence I would offer up his sideline demeanor when things aren't going well....the Ohio State incident this year. Did that come from a guy who only cares about being comfortable?

His pursuit of the TOP flight talent out there...we've had several instances where he has pushed for and recruited top 25 level talent but had little success in landing those level players (like most of the rest of college bball)..

His monetary incentives for winning....we read about examples of that this year and how much extra money he made by making the tournament and by winning the first round game....so, he makes a LOT more money by winning at a higher level.....but that is no motivation? What normal person would not push for those extra incentives?

So, no I don't see where you're going with this......if you were intending to poke fun at the original intent of your post you have my apologies in advance.

Many teams are getting super quick athletic guards who aren’t even 4-5 star recruits. Why the hell cant we find any?? Even mid major teams have them.

CJ is supposed to be very quick off the dribble.
Taking it with a grain of salt, but that's what Fran said about CJ.

Unlike some on Iowa fans, I'm really looking forward to a deeper team next year. I think Nunge, Pemsl, Fredrick, and Toussaint all have the potential to be in the rotation next year, even if everyone returns except Dailey.

Joe T....Mike G was actually pretty quick and athletic...just struggled with his outside shot. Sap was reasonably quick and athletic, Bryce C was pretty quick, and Marble wasn't bad for his size.......just because our current PG isn't super quick doesn't mean we can't get those guards....we have one on next years roster.

If you watched this year's tournament beyond Iowa you would know what I mean.

I have.....just finished watching MSU v Duke.....Winston, MSU PG, is an outstanding guard but not necessarily considered quick. I would also love to have some ultra quick guards...and we have one coming in (if you watched his video you would know what I mean)....but being ultra quick isn't required to be successful. Critical thinking is important, particularly when applied to ones own position.

Iowa hasn't been quick at PG for quite some time.

Gesell is arguably the most athletic regular contributor at point in the Fran era and he was at best average athletically when compared to the rest of the B1G during his playing days. He at least didn't get beat like a drum consistently when playing D against his counterparts. And that's Fran's high mark.

Perry, I have to disagree with you on Winston for sparty. He's not the quickest guy at point that I've seen in the tourney. I'd give that honor to the lightning quick mighty mite at auburn. Jared Harper is probably 5'10" at best in his shoes but his speed with and without the ball is incredible. But Winston is well above average at his position in ability to beat his man off the dribble and be a credible defender against the opposing 1.

I wouldn't make the claim that Fran hasn't tried to land more athletic PG and or combo guards. The reality is, though, that he hasn't gotten it done. And I'm continually perplexed that there's no sign recently that he takes advantage of opportunities when guys leave the team to find a grad transfer or juco player to fill that need.

Does Fran strike you as a person who is just going through the motions?

I agree with you that Winston is above average in his ability to beat his man off the dribble, and to be a decent defender....but I don't see him being a high level in terms of quickness...I think those attributes are based on average B10 PG quickness but above average smarts for the game. As an example we all know that JBO is not a guard that is quick laterally, most would say he was slow...but he has a move when he has the ball where he goes lateral to free himself of the defender that most often works. I think it's more about his timing as to when he does it and that it is unusual and surprising. With Winston it is that he knows how to use his body positioning and how to set people up to get buy them combined with some strength. Carson Edwards on the other hand is just flat out quick.

Did Fran not recruit DJ Carton? The high level guards you are referring to every school tries for and not every team has.

Exactly. We were a missed free throw from the sweet 16 and purdue made elite 8 after winning in overtime to the same team. We'll have more experience and some more players coming in. Guys like Nunge and Pemsl have experience. I'm excited for next year.

yes 11-9 in conference potential has me jacked up!

I watched the Duke game today. Which one of their guards were super quick. Very poor guards for a team that can recruit anyone in America. It's pretty poor when you have to have you 5 star All American power forward playing a sg and driving to the basket like Cook. Just saying. Mike K. needs to be fired.
