I don't think anyone here is saying the coaches aren't responsible but some of you are acting like the players have zero responsibility for their performance. The coaches literally cannot make the plays for them.
I called out the bad play of the players in my earlier post this thread. There's so much blame to go around that I think even the equipment managers failed to man up.
But okay, if you want names, I'll give you names:
1) Josh Jackson should have been pulled from punt returns weeks ago. Go back and watch game film to see how many yards he's cost Iowa's offense following his non-catch, non-return punt returns. See, this is the perfect example of how it's both the players and the coaches' fault, but more the coaches' fault. He may want to play, but he's clearly got bad depth perception or constantly lines up WAAAAAY out of position. Meanwhile, Vandeberg returned punts well two years ago and last year before getting hurt and he even caught one and returned it today ... before the f'ing coaches put Jackson back in. Jackson has done this in several games so this is on the coaches at this point.
2) Stanley's overthrows and, even worse, the bullets he throws when he needs touch. How bad is Tyler Weigers? The guy came in lauded with 4-stars but apparently ... sucks? Or is it just the same old Ferentz' "I'll stick with my guy until he's running on stumps and has to throw the football with his eye sockets.
3) Wadley can't run short yardage unless he gets great blocking. He also can't get into space without great blocking. The O-line is beatup, young, and inconsistent. Yet, the damn coaches kept running into the middle or the short side of the field into a wall of defenders that overwhelmed them the entire second half. Just keep calling the plays because eventually ... no, we'll never use our 225 pound battering ram RB to gain short yardage. Instead, we'll use the guy who spins as soon as a defender gets within a yard of him. Guess what? Other teams are catching on. They know the moves. And Wadley had little-to-no burst. Definitely a bad game by his standards and it wasn't just the horrible blocking. But what did the staff do? Go with more Young or Kelly-Martin? Nope. Not much. And then after a great run early in the 4th they took Young out of the game and ... he never returned.
4) The defense had very little spark. Even in the first half when NW wasn't moving the ball, it seemed more like NW was just awful rather than Iowa playing well. And in the second half, NW just beat up our DL (and OL). The Bullies of the Big Ten? More like the Pussies of the Big 10. That was a humiliating performance. The coaches weren't fired up (when are they ever?) and in the second half the team looked like it was ready to board a plane to fly home. Actually, they looked like they wanted to go hide under the bleachers.
5) Easley drops, Fant's monumental drop! That's all on the players. They screwed up mightily. On short passes, Iowa's WRs can't catch the ball in important situations (except Vandeberg--why the hell is he not featured more!!! He's the one proven WR commodity Iowa has!); on long passes, Stanley overthrows almost every time. He hit one today, but he missed a couple, too, in addition to a 20-yard overthrow for an interception. Either Brian Ferentz does not know the strengths and weaknesses of his players and therefore calls plays they can't execute, the position coaches suck at teaching the players, or the recruiting is just not there for the Ferentz mafia.
6) How come it takes forever for Iowa to call plays compared to most other teams. This happens every game where they have to use timeouts or they get a delay of game or the play is so rushed it's executed poorly. That's bad coaching and bad preparation of the players to act quickly, disciplined, efficient. This stone age theory about running out the clock from the opening kickoff is just maddening. I actually the players lose their momentum, rhythm, and spark because of the slowness of getting plays in every down. And today on D there were guys out of position on critical 3rd downs. I'm gonna go a little soft on that one because Jewell was out. That was a big loss since he is the emotional leader of the team in addition to being the team's best player. Period. It's gonna suck losing Jewell after this year.
7) I could go on and on and I'm sure many others could, too. And please note that any tinge of anger or sarcasm you sense is not meant for you at all. It's all for the coaches and players. Embarrassing.
