Pollard and Dresser agreed to a seven-year deal worth a total of $2.25 million in guaranteed salary plus incentives. His base salary for next year is $300,000. Similar to other high profile personnel announcements at Iowa State

Solid hire. Va Tech is right behind Iowa right now in the rankings. If he can do that from Virginia...

Good hire by ISU. They got the money right to pull him away from the east coast. If you look at his current roster he is doing really well in PA, OH, NJ http://www.hokiesports.com/wrestling/players/ Not that he can't still recruit the east coast from ISU, but it's not done as easily.

That's going to be the challenge. ISU needs KD to pull nationally because KJ had an advantage built in from an ethnic standpoint. He was one of the very few D-1 HCs with that. I'm sure they have forged many connections on the East coast. Getting those kids to school west of the Mississippi won't be quite as easy, imo.

Dresser's new view each morning?

With Central Iowa being the better part of the state HS wise, that may help Dresser attract more kids to ISU.

Maybe it is but with SE Polk, Valley, and soon to be Waukee, there will be plenty of kids to choose from.
Good point.
I do believe that people in the Des Moines area tend be a lot more likely to be Iowa fans rather than Iowa State fans though.

If he is getting 300K what is Brands getting? I guess I would move for that kind of money. Maybe Pollard is serious about wrestling or some alum is serious.

Guys: I haven't lived in Iowa for 30+ years, so I'm curious if you all think that Dresser going to Iowa will have a major impact on the Hawks' ability to draft the top talent in the region, though clearly everyone's seeking out talent wherever it can be found? And how do you think this will affect the boys who have already committed to ISU for 2017 (e.g., Jarod Verkleeren, Austin Gomez, Jake Allar and others)? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I think it will not impact the ability of Brands to land Iowa kids they want.

Neither program will succeed with the handful of talent this State produces. In my opinion... Dresser might actually get more Iowa guys than Brands, but it won't be the elite guys. I think Dresser will steal more guys from Minnesota than taking kids Brands wants.
Iowa has the footprint in Pa. and Ohio and has shown the ability to get them west of the Mississippi. Time will tell if Dresser gets his East coast kids to Iowa.
What I love about the hire is that the rivalry will resume very soon.

Do you think the hire hurts Schwab more than Brands? Had to figure that a guy like Teske would be looking hard at UNI if he wants to stay instate. Dresser is a damn good coach and could put ISU in play. Same for Thomsen.

ISU's problems have not been lack of quality recruits. Their problems have been development and coaching decisions. This is an immediate step up for the program.

This is my take as well. Their recruiting hasn't been stellar, but the good ones they've gotten haven't developed. KD is good at coachin' em up.

I think it means Dresser did some solid negotiating. Go to Ames get offer; it gets leaked to the press and he goes back to VT and gets counter-offer. Excitement generated throughout wrestling community and ISU so AD is stuck and has to top it.

CP tweeted about it earlier, but I think this contract is good for wrestling as a whole. Not a huge 'Trickle down economics' guy, but hopefully this raises the bar compensation wise for other teams across the country.

Didn't reach the incentives they did the year before. Might have been team placing. Might not have been.
That Brooks match was brutal. Didn't get the fall sucked but losing the team point took Iowa from tied for 4th to 5th. Guess it may have cost Tom twice.

I actually thought Terry was making closer to what Tom was...he was 5 years ago...interesting....looks like Terry is sacrificing some pretty goid money to stay at Iowa....165,000 grand is pretty damn good money though to do what you love

There is a very small number of schools that could pay him more, even as Head Coach. He is somewhat sacrificing his own presitige by staying at Iowa as an assistant as opposed to being the head man somewhere, but he's not sacrificing that much financially. There are less than 10 school's that pay their Head Coach more than his salary.

yea I get that too....was thinking mostly about ISU....I hadnt seem their pay in years....Tom makes a little more than I thought too...good for them both! Thats about well as a person is going to ever do in wrestling

It's an interesting dynamic. In terms of overall school loyalty, I'd say it's about 50/50 in the DSM area, having lived here for 17 years. However, in terms of wrestling loyalty, you're right -- there are FAR more informed Iowa wrestling fans than ISU fans, based on my experience.

If ISU returns to relevance in wrestling, I'm sure some bandwagon fans will jump on, but it's my impression that most of the "wrestling world" in central Iowa is far more tuned into Iowa than ISU. So at least based on my general impression over the last couple of decades, I'd say more standout young wrestlers would be more interested in Iowa than ISU. Of course, success can generate interest, and maybe Dresser can change that. Frankly, I think any coach at ISU is going to struggle in keeping up with the Brands brothers and Iowa. If Cael can't get it done, I'm skeptical than anyone else will do better. It's a tough spot for any head coach.
