JACKSON NAMED CAMP DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa junior defensive back Josh Jackson has been named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s 55-24 win over No. 3 Ohio State Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. The award was announced Sunday by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Jackson was also named the national defensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

Jackson (6-foot-1, 192-pounds), a native of Corinth, Texas (Lake Dallas), tied a school record with three pass interceptions (Tyler Sash and Grant Steen), and also added three solo tackles. His first theft led to a touchdown that gave Iowa a 31-17 halftime advantage. His second interception led to a field goal, and his third stopped an Ohio State scoring threat in the fourth quarter. His final interception was also recognized by ESPN as Saturday’s Play of the Day in college football.

Jackson and the Hawkeye defense allowed just seven points in the second half while holding Ohio State 200 yards total offense and 22 points below its season averages. Jackson leads the nation in passes defended (15 PBU, 5 interceptions), and is tied for second nationally with 0.6 interceptions per game. Jackson has five of Iowa’s 13 interceptions on the season. He is fifth on the team with 36 tackles.

Jackson is the second Hawkeye to earn the Walter Camp weekly defensive honor this season, as senior linebacker Josey Jewell was recognized following Iowa’s victory over Wyoming in the season opener. Jackson and Jewell have also been named semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Still sucks that the Thorpe award committee can' add players to their list after they've made a cut... quite the snub if you ask me

If that's true, then it just shows how asinine "rules" are. The fact that the committee didn't include Jackson isn't Jackson's fault! What the hell is the point of such a stupid rule for an award? If Jackson finishes playing the way he has so far, giving that award to anyone else would be another sad commentary on the meaning of awards.

I thought they have added names to those lists in the past. That sucks. I guess that just means Jackson will have to come back next year so he can win that award!

We can only hope that it gives him a " I'll show you guys next year" attitude and comes back next year with a chip on his shoulder.

Teams won't throw his way though so it will be almost impossible for him to improve on what he did this season. That said, I'm starting to think that Phil Parker and company can really coach up defensive backs because Iowa is quietly producing a number of really good ones that seem to get a shot at the NFL.

Phil has been churning out NFL players for his entire tenure at Iowa. Probably a better return rate on NFL picks than OL or TE.

Hope to see him in a Broncos uniform either next year or the year after! We need help in Denver.

I guess Idk for sure that they don' but I just figured since they already announced the semifinalists for the Thorpe that they don't

I have to think it was ego that Barrett kept throwing at Jackson. Heisman guy, 4-star has to think he should be able to burn no name CB from Iowa. Jackson ended up making his name known.

CONGRATS! When was the last time we’ve seen the hat trick from an Iowa defender??

I think it was Tyler Sash in 2009 against Iowa State in Ames? I think there was another Hawkeye to record 3 in a game, but I can't think of who it was off the top of my head...

Went to the records book to look it up. The other Hawkeye to accomplish this was Grant Steen vs. Indiana in 2002. Completely forgot about that one, that's pretty amazing for 3 Hawkeyes to do that in a fairly short window of time.

National Defensive Player of the Week, but shared Big Ten Defensive POtW with a player from Michigan. Seems legit.
And Michigan had the co-offensive players of the week as well in Higdon and Evans. Should've been Stanley or even Brian Lewerke/Felton Davis. All this for the Michigan players, while playing MINNESOTA FOR GODS SAKE. Smells fishy if u ask me. Maybe Harbaugh is paying them off in khakis
