Jackson Stepping Down

Unless they land someone solid.... Idk.... I actually was thinking after this year and with some of their commits that maybe, just maybe they would get better. Just think this is a harder road and the job is not exactly as coveted as it used to be.

Troy Nickerson? Former ISU assistant/great technician/young/motivated/D1 head coaching experience.

Nah, he's just getting his feet under him as a head coach. I like the guy...a lot, I just don't think he's ready to be handed the reigns of what should be a big program.

It's going to be a tall task for whoever gets the job as that program has been run into the dirt.

ISU is going to make a run at him with more dollars than PSU. Time will tell

That's hysterical.

PSU AD budget and alumni donors dwarfs whatever ISU could possibly scrape together. Ira's checkbook is pretty big.

Cael, Cody & Casey get taken care of quite nicely. And more importantly, PSU AD funds the program for whatever Cael needs for operations, recruiting travel, plus everything w/ NLWC.

ISU is no match for the Slush Fund.

PSU also has the added incentive to keep everyone around that know the "Inner Workings". Radio Shack cellphones and all.

I don't think Nickerson would be a bad choice. Yeah, he's only in his 3rd year as a head coach but he's young, he's energetic and kids really like him. But for selfish reasons I hope it doesn't happen.

going out of the box here and he is a long shot to even get a call for the job, but what about Cary Kolat. young guy with some to little experience maybe he can change the focus a bit and get it back on track. He's got an assistant in Garrett Kiley who was previously at ISU so he knows the program a bit. with kolat's background in the freestyle market, he may be able to pull in some top recruits as well.

Not so young but his name still carries weight thanks to Flo and being a H.S. legend...especially to the boys in P.A.

I'd see him take the pitt job before isu but I honestly don't think he's leaving Campbell

Ideas we need to move on from

Cael coming home – Cael Sanderson is NOT walking through that door. He is sitting on a gold mine right now and is running a well-oiled, perennial National Championship contending, team. Not happening

Paulson twins – great recruiters and solid assistants. If Pollard keeps it in house, then he should have kept KJ. Need to start clean, even if it means you lose a few (more) recruits initially.

Jake Varner – head assistant at best at this time.

Cody Sanderson – see above (Paulsen twins / Jake Varner)

Drew Pariano – can recruit and he’s available right now. That’s why you need to move on…he's available right now because he was let go from Northwestern. Move on.

Mark Cody – two steps backward from KJ.

Under the Radar

Bryan Snyder – solid recruiter, good coach, a lot of freestyle experience to run the CWC. Bring Burroughs along? Not likely, but could be a juicy little carrot to dangle in front of Jaime Pollard if you want an immediate change

Need to give a VERY close look

Chris Bono – has created a solid program from the bottom up. If he has similar trajectory at ISU, then they are back in the top 5-8 each year. Bring Reader along with, keep Escobedo and Gadson in the room and the CWC immediately has an identity.

Pat Popolozio – He’s proven he can build a program and bring in top notch recruits to a “lesser” program. I believe with ISU’s facilities he could make that happen at ISU too and compete in a better conference.

Mark Perry – just a matter of time until he gets the reins of a program. Might be tough to leave Martinez prior to his senior year, but if he were to bring Martinez to Ames after he graduates that’d give some much needed attention to the CWC as well as a pretty damn good training partner for the college guys.

Casey Cunningham & Eric Guerrero – these two are in the same boat in that they’re great technicians and recruiters. Hard to leave the programs they’re with, but you never know what motivates these guys. Do they want to build / run a program OR are they happy with their roles on really good teams? Either one would be great.

Kevin Dresser – He’s an orange, but he’d be a solid coach. He’s done a really good job at VT and would love the opportunity to go against Iowa…at least for the first year or two and then will realize he doesn’t hold a candle to them and wants the rivalry dual to be wiped off the calendar.

Nice list. Just two comments.

My gut feeling is that Casey is motivated to stay at PSU from the husband/father standpoint. He has a great gig so why upset the status quo at home. Even if a school could tip the balance so much that his current view changes, it won't be ISU that could do it.

Kevin Dresser has built a nice program at VT with great support from the administration. Why on Earth would he go to ISU? He has built what ISU wants. A top 5 team most years.

I like your first two choices as being within reasonable grasp for ISU, which is no longer a destination program for anyone who already has a strong resume.

Something tells me Pollard will go the "lazy route" like the Gopher AD did and give it to a Paulsen after his feelers don't yield anything decent. I suspect no one gets serious inquiries during the season.

I would think dresser, Popolizio and possibly bono would be in the move on category as well.

Popolizio just landed the top recruiting class in the country - he's not leaving NC State.

On the recruiting trial, NC State’s 2016 12-person signing class was ranked the nation’s best by both FloWrestling.com and InterMatWrestling.com. In that class, the Pack signed two of the top-six ranked wrestlers in the 2016 recruiting class, and five in the top-66 overall. http://gopack.com/coaches.aspx?rc=7

It's not like he couldn't probably bring some of those guys with him. Two of those wrestlers in that class have redshirts if NCST tried to block their transfer.

I have trouble believing that any of these guys will come to ISU.

1. No PSU guys will come. They've got too much good going on. Why mess it up?
2. Bono is doing great now, and coaching ISU is such a challenge. Maybe, but I doubt it. They could have picked him before, but they didn't.
3. Mark Cody or Greg Randall? No, they're still licking their wounds, but either might be good though.
4. Popolizio or Dresser? Ain't gonna happen. Both of them have too much going on, and no loyalty to ISU to compensate for losing it.
5. Eric Guerrero will not leave Ok. St. for ISU. Maybe another program closer to Stillwater could pull him, but not ISU in it's current condition.
6. Jimmy Z. I really can't see it. Why set yourself up for a broken heart?
7. Mark Perry? He likes a challenge, but reviving ISU is so much more than training wrestlers in the room. I think Perry holds out for another program with fewer issues when one of the greats retires.
8. Jordan Burroughs. He's still wrestling, and he's not going away. He might be interested in 3-6 years, but not THIS year.
9. Gable. He's lucky he can still get out of bed everyday, but with an abundance of really brilliant assistants (Perry Bros., Metcalf, Burroughs, David Taylor, Ramos, etc.), it would be fun to watch for a year or two until one of them took over the reins. Could resurrect the program. He could be the only coach with statues at TWO universities.

More plausible ideas for guys that have something to gain:

1. Nickerson is very good, but can he turn a 1-9 team into a legitimate contender? Hasn't so so far. A legitimate contender has to challenge Ok. St. for the Big 12 title. Good luck.
2. Damion Hahn can't stay in Ithaca forever, but Rob Koll will.
3. Roger Kish might like a place at lower latitude with a bigger budget. Then again, maybe not. He's doing a nice job at NDSU.
4. One of the Paulsens might be safe choice. We'd see what they can do, and that would buy some time, but time for what?

I actually feel sorry for Jamie Pollard. Jeez, did I just say that? Ahh, nevermind.

His move on category was guys who most likely wouldn't take the job, that's why I said that

Yes, that NC St's top ranked recruiting class with #4 Reenan and #6 Hidlay bested PSU's inferior recruiting class of #1 Hall, #2 Suriano and #5 Manville.
As FLO's Willie explained it, PSU is so loaded with top recruits already, they don't have room to squeeze in yet another superstar for all 4 years. Or something like that.

Well, you're not offering anything for your argument except "I said so".
I don't feel the need to go into detail of the things that led to my conclusion and then have them dismissed by other posters and then have a big back and forth.

I enjoy reading this forum and don't post very often, but thought I would throw that out.

So I will just defer to your position, and the other posters on the board, and enjoy the rest of the season.

Money. Prestige. A chance to run their own program. A chance to run a program at one of the few schools who can realistically expect to win an NCAA title at some point.

Just a few reasons...

The wrestling budget at ISU has remained flat while Pollard has invested additional funds into the track/CC programs. That isn't realistically going to change and certainly not to the $$$ level required to peel Cael away from PSU.

Gee, Spooner, I haven't heard the words money and prestige used with ISU wrestling lately. I also don't know how realistic an ISU NCAA title is, but I like the way you think. My hope is that they land a great coach.

Do you think a 2nd or 3rd assistant at PSU makes more than KJ? Do you think either one of those roles is more prestigious than a head coaching position at a major school, steeped in tradition?
