Piggy backing off of Todd Connor's interview from a few weeks ago with Warner and after watching his (Warner's not Connor's ;)) performance this weekend got me more excited about his likely future as a Hawk. During his interview he had very good things to say about Iowa wrestling and put us in his top five. He said he wouldn't commit till November, but the feeling I came away with is that he is Iowa's to lose. I watched him with a renewed interest this week and he did not fail to impress. He won a Cadet Greco AND freestyles title at 85 kg (187lbs.) He was particularly impressive in his freestyle final against Michael Beard from Malvern Prep PA. Beard was ranked #8 in the country this year at 182lbs (Warner was #7). Warner was absolutely dominant in their best of 3 series winning 12-4 and 11-3. He is very Iowa already, always pushing the pace driving forward, wearing out his opponent. It was clear that Beard is talented as well, but Warner started to break him mentally with his pressure and conditioning. I'm curious whether he goes 182 again next year or if he's big enough to bump up to 197.

His Greco title is certainly the cherry on top. In his semi-final match against Nittany Lion Geno Morelli, Hawkeye Burke Paddock showed the advantage of a solid Greco background. Paddock went to the Greco well often in that match and it paid off with a dominant tech fall/pin of Morelli. The style that he used isn't going to work against everybody, but it's another tool in the box for him and for Warner.
