Whoa. Definitely didn't think that would be a possibility, was hoping he would be back after the bye or right around there.

Certainly alarming to say the least. Probably means he won't be back for NW but if he is, he'll be less than 100% and will be for rest of season. The poll is turning out exactly how I thought it would so far BTW

He was just getting going and I liked what I was seeing from him. Wouldn't want him to come back for just a few games and struggle or not be able to contribute with the injury.

I didn't realize that he played as a true freshman at Nevada. Given the current situation - he's a definite candidate for a medical hardship waiver. I dare say that he'd be a shoe-in to get it.

One problem I see is that IKM and Toren both look really good (at least to me) - thus, I'd just hope that we'd have a pretty active RB rotation in '18.

If they could some how "know" he was going to get a red shirt I would tell him to get in the weight room with a play book. From what we saw he looked like a stud, but, wasn't 100% sure how to run behind zone blocking. If they could lean on AW and TY/Ikm to get through the year and have James be the workhorse next year we would be in better long term shape. That being said if the west gets tight with wiscy and we Could go to Indy. Burn every red shirt and every trick play we have, hell throw the sink at them, but get to Indy for recruiting.

Agree, he's a shoe in. I say take the risk and go for the medical redshirt especially if he's still not going to be 100% for a while.

IKM and T Young are good but Butler is a couple steps up from both of them.

Obviously I feel for him, and recognize that Butler probably has aspirations larger than college football, but he'd be much more valuable to this team next year, IMO. He would be the feature back, a fantastic mentor for Geil, and continue to mentor IK-M and Young.

We almost always need to go 3 or more deep at RB due to injuries or whatnot .... thus, it would certainly be a definite plus to have Butler back for '18.

If it's true that Butler would have to wear a brace ... I hope that the medical redshirt remains an option.

At this point, a medical redshirt looks like his best option. Word from the coaches is that the injury is worse than they initially thought. Medical redshirts are usually pretty cut and dried, he'd be approved if he is out the rest of the year.

Part of his coming to Iowa was to increase his NFL chances. Coming back healthy next year and being in the mix for #1 is his best chance.

The more the better...especially when you consider our record at keeping RB's healthy and on the field.

Hope this is possible. JB seems like a great kid, would love to see him in B&G one more year.

I don't think he'll be 100% this year. One of the coaches made a comment about bones healing in reference to JB and that it was a "serious injury". Best to give him time to heal and, hopefully, come back 100% next year.

What a bummer. I think he was adding quite a bit to the team and our run game has not been the same since he got hurt.

I have no idea how the medical redshirts work, but if he is a shoe in like some of you suggest, it would seem to be a no brainer for both James and Iowa. Iowa would have a very talented back coming back, and James would have the chance to be top dog for a year.

That sucks for him if he’s thinking NFL. No one is getting younger.
The "age" card gets way overplayed. The career length of an average NFL RB is so short ... that how old they are almost never comes into play. It's only the very few elite RBs who manage to maintain good health that have a long "shelf-life."

NFL = not for long

If you have a remaining year of eligibility, if you played something like 30% of the season or less (all in the first half of the season), and injury prevents you from further competing ... then getting the medical hardship waiver (aka medical redshirt) is pretty straightforward.

Drew Ott's case was a border-line case. He had technically played in greater than the allowed percentage of games. However, if you consider WHEN he was injured and how the injury limited his snaps - I still think that percentage he played still fell within the guidelines. However, policy-makers don't delve in those fine details.

Why is excellent depth a problem? Are you AIRBHG??

having Butler back would be great in both his running ability and receiving ability.
this would give the team a 3 headed monster at RB and if Toks RS's they would be set for next season and allow Geil to RS

Agreed Kilroy, keeping him in the stable would allow us to back build. I have been a big fan of K. BRYAN and think he will be a stud down the line.

Guys, JB is a great person. He's a leader and a great presence in the locker room. I wish this was his 4th year at Iowa, but it didn't work out that way. The injury has been very disappointing to someone who was living his dream.

I originally thought it was a soft tissue injury. When Kirk mentioned a bone healing, I was surprised and and a little depressed.

Come back next year once Brian truly figures out how too use the passing game to open the running game

We have Butler we are undefeated and ranked in top 10. We needed him to give Akrum a rest and to pound down the defense . He would of been the difference .

Does a dislocated elbow have the same lasting effects as a dislocated shoulder? Once a shoulder 'pops out' it is prone to 'popping out' again more easily than before the initial accident. If so, wouldn't that be almost a career ender for a RB? Is a brace practical? Medical nerds?

Not sure, but the reinjury with shoulders can be largely mitigated with PT and targeted exercise.
