Does Bond have to be British? Does he have to be white? Does he have to be a man?

Idris Elba - known to some of us as Stringer Bell in The Wire, and to others as Luther (from the Brit show of the same name) - has been mentioned as the next Bond. I think he'd be great at it, if he would get into shape for it.

What about a woman Bond? Why not? Or would that break the mold?

Not being British would break the mold, I think. But a sufficiently British black man could pull it off.

A woman would be a harder break from tradition. But the right actress could probably pull it off. I'm just having a problem coming up with an actress with the proper chops. Angelina Jolie? Lucy Lawless (Xena)? Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister)?

I always struggle when a fictional character has a certain set of attributes and they change those with the casting call. Like Tom Cruise was just wrong as Jack Reacher and Colin Farrell was wrong for Alexander the Great and Christian Bale was wrong for Moses. IMO you could make a very good action movie with an Australian female aboriginal, but she can't play James Bond.

I would think you'd be more supportive of this sort of "break the norm" sort of idea.

While I'm glad I can surprise you, its a bit curious that I hit this nerve with some so often. Maybe you are projecting? Maybe you are erroring in thinking there is anything "break the norm" about me. I keep posting that I value pragmatism, reason and material empirical evidence. That's all pretty concrete rational thinking that should be the normal standard even if it is often not the case. Do you think this because I'm gay? Over half the planet likes dick, its not really outside the norm.

I guess it could be "straightsplaining" but I always found it odd how the gays embraced transexuals and queers in the LBGTQ movement. The movement was embracing everyone who wasn't "normal" and I figured their path would be easier if society only had to accept BGLs and not Ts and Qs.

Angelina Jolie? LOL Good Lord, yeah she's so freakn' tough. Well, the Bond part doesn't take much acting ability, so she has that going for her. She can't act her way out of a paper bag.

I could go on for days about gay politics. Blame big hearted liberal lesbians for that political decision, they seem to run things. I probably have less understanding about why a guy would want a puss than you do. At least you like that bit. And I have no idea who they are trying to include with the Q that wasn't already covered. I mean is it for goth and emos? What would be queer other than a homo and why do we need 3 letters for that? If I'm going to type three letters for homosexual, I'll just type gay. And the only part of bi that causes problems is the homo side of the equation, so they should just be covered with a G too. It should be GT, at least that has the charm of being shorter to type than gay.

Yes, Bond needs to be British because he works for MI6. Other than that it's open although traditionally a big part of his persona was being a heartthrob/womanizer. It would be hard to keep that persona with a woman.

Why can't Bond be a womanizing lesbian?

Hell, we could make an awesome porno movie with this premise.

Why can't he be the head detective?

Well, James Bond works for MI6.

I think he kinda sorta needs to be British.
People with dual citizenship can work for MI6, so long as at least one of their parents is a British citizen and they meet the other requirements.and renounce their other citizenship. You could plug a non-Brit in as Bond and explain it as his/her father was an MI6 operative who spent his career working abroad and that's why this person doesn't have a British accent.

Having said that, I doubt we'll ever see a woman or non-Brit as Bond. Purists lost their freaking minds because Daniel Craig's hair wasn't dark enough. I don't think they're ready for Angelina Jolie as 007.

I was actually thinking that a female Bind would use her sexuality even more - with men and women. I suspect a hot female Bond with multiple lesbian conquests in the movie wouldn't lose a single straight male viewer.

I never go to the movies anymore but I'd be tempted to buy a ticket for that.
