Jan needs to take McCabe aside and tell her to...

...start shooting more shots or else sit down. She is too good not to be utilized 100%. If everyone else is clicking McCabe is the difference maker down the stretch. After today Jan likely understands this team is going to rise or fall from the outside in. Going forward she needs to tighten up the rotation.

3 shots in 28 minutes. The 3 she made was sweet. Yep. Shoot more! Totally with you here.

Agree. Otherwise there’s no reason for her to be out there.

Totally agree…I’ve never been a huge McCabe fan, even w/so many clamoring for her to play more, but…. She has improved her overall game enough to be on the floor consistently. But it’s not good enough that she doesn’t still need to do her primary thing and that’s shoot!! She does not like to shoot unless she has clean air in front of her, and she doesn’t appear to be terrific coming around screens and letting it fly. Granted they don’t do it a lot, But I’ve never been under the impression, she has a very high basketball IQ or that mentality to her game.

It’s honestly only been since midseason that I thought the rest of our skills improved enough for her to even play consistently!

As far as the rotation goes, she’s already tightened it up by not playing Ava much and you can see how some of our fans feel about that.

McCabe needs to grow her game, She is a spot up shooter and teams work hard to see she doesn’t get many clean shots. Developing the ability to drive and shoot 15 foot pull up vs just hoping to get a clean look from 3 the majority of the time. She has improved defensively, Seems to have decent handles. Adding some variety to her offensive game this offseason would be beneficial.

I would politely disagree. McCabe is solid. She handles the ball well, plays much better defense than last year, and is a positive force on the floor. But I absolutely agree that she needs to shoot more. In that respect, she's a bit like Josh Dix on the men's side. Both seem reluctant to shoot most of the time. Yet there have been a few instances this season, for both McCabe and Dix, when they've been quick to pull the trigger, and when they have, they've been fantastic.

At least half a dozen times a game, including yesterday, I'm shouting at the TV for McCabe to shoot it. Instead, she dribbles or passes off, and Iowa often either takes a worse shot and misses or turns it over. There is seldom any downside to McCabe shooting, and she's shown that she can get her shot off quickly, so don't hesitate. Let 'er fly.

As others have said it looks like Jan has pretty much cut the rotation back and going mostly veterans and Guyton. And McCabe has a little more experience so she seems to be getting the nod, which is fine. But she had zero assists, no steals, wasn’t very aggressive on D and only took 3 shots in 28 minutes. She did grab 6 boards. It’s kind a game to game thing for me with her. Guyton got some time yesterday and played well, had a few Freshman mistakes in the OT that were costly. Agree with you to let it fly when open.

Totally agree to shoot when open. The key word is open. If she is not wide open she is not that great of a shooter. She cannot create a shot on her own. People have to penetrate and kick it out to her when the defense collapses. She needs to keep moving to get open as well. The rest of her game has improved. Lucy can create her own shot but no one else on the team seems to be capable of doing that.

Thats kind of why I laughed when someone mentioned she needed to develop a step back/side step three like CC22. I'n not sure people realize how much skill, strength, and practice that takes. Think of it also like shooting darts while someone is moving the dart board backwards or side to side.

Agree. Would also like to see them draw up something for her. Lots of rushed shots lately. Guyton/Lucy should drive and dish to her more or they need to do something to get her open. She should be shooting 8-10 shots a game.

Yes. So where are the screens, double screens, to get her some shots?
So here’s the thing about that. Go watch any other game. Opposing defenses know who the shooters are. If McCabe was the focus of the offense we’d run more plays for her. The fact is in basketball today you need to be able to create your own shot. Sure we can run a few plays for McCabe, and we do, but the facts are she’s either going to score in transition or she needs to be pretty open.

Offenses are supposed to create openings/shot opportunities. Lucy can't do her thing unless she is doing her thing. She is something like a mini-Caitlin. She the cam shaft in Iowa's offensive motor. I agree it would be great if McCabe could be more of a factor, but it's better she's using the times and opportunities to contribute rather than forcing things. It's easy to forget Iowa often has 3 or even 4 frosh on the floor.

I actually think she's heady and astute and plays like an upperclassman. Her floor game is steady, she's a decent rebounder and though her shots haven't been falling, she's 3-point threat opponents have to respect.

Quit knowing what your talking about, I’m tired of it 🥰

It'll be interesting, we'll see how this All-everything super-dooper freshmen Addy Deal takes the reins next year. A lot is expected and rightly so. She's the most talented womens athlete recruited to Iowa City excepting Number 22 of course, and we have to be excited.

We can't forget about the other recruits, Layla Hayes and Journey Houston. Combine this with the growth and maturity of the excellent 2024 recruiting class and (hopefully) returning veterans this should be a powerful team into the future.

If Jensen can continue to land recruits commensurate with Iowa's current success and history the program will fill Carver arena and keep fans happy. Recruiting is year-round work, effort, diligence and persistence.

Imagine what Iowa's football program could have been with solid, year-round recruiting effort over the decades.

Seems always a few times a game McCabe will get passed the ball on the wing in transition and decline an open dribble to the hoop. Either told not to try it, or doesn't want to risk a challenged layup. It's a little odd because she can dribble fast enough to go for it, and she really needs to add to her game. Does anyone else see this?

No coach is telling someone at this level it to drive the ball.

I’ve been saying this all season. Jan needs to tell her to shoot the fu***ing ball or sit the hell down. She shoots 43% from 3 pointers and seems reluctant to shoot.

Big fan of that contested layup she made. Exactly what I was suggesting! Keep it going TM. 💥

McCabe has a lot of misses whenever she speeds up her shot.

You want someone that shoots a high percentage to shoot a lot.. but sometimes players are high percentage because they take the correct shot.

Her last two 3s she took her time and shot then delivered.

Hopefully she’ll drain a few more today!!

This is why Paige shoots such a high %. Her fans talk about her efficiency, and she is. But she does NOT force shots. She isn’t a player like CC, Hidalgo, Miles, Sabrina, JuJu, etc…which is fine. But someone shooting 10, 3s a game @35% some from 30 ft, deserves props, compared to someone shooting 5 (PB 4.5 this year ) @ 45% ( PB 41% this year )…

The spacing for the rest of the team alone is wildly different!

OT: Tried to bait that "guy" in the game thread. Didn't work (this time) lol.
