Told his teammates he just had a really bad game AND he expects to come back with a
vengeance, more focused and hard working.

Sounds good to me.

Now, please have one of the Coaches work with Mikey on his Free Throw stroke.
We know he's a good shooter. Just go up there with confidence and Knock em in.
Mike will fix it, in my humble opinion.

I couldn't be less concerned for Uthofff to bounce back. The kid is too good. I would honestly be scared if I were Northwestern. Jarrod seems to me like he could be a good MLB closer. I just have a feeling from him that he has a very short memory. I bet he went fishing or something like that this weekend and didn't even think about the game.

I really hope you're right about Mikey, RockEye. He's been a bad FT shooter in clutch situations his whole career here at Iowa. I'm skeptical that he will get better mid-season. We really just need to get Jarrod and Jok the ball in fouling situations at the end of games. Crap, I'd even have confidence in Woody to knock em down.

I think he needs to understand that if he plays a guy this similar to himself he needs to go to the rim. If he's playing someone shorter then him step backs are OK. Shot blocker's love space so He can't do fall away shots against guys that are long like Jared

Everytime he attacked in the first half, he shot free throws. I said it in the game thread at halftime, if they continue to defend Uthoff like that make your living at the line.

He got some good looks against Layman...he just didn't hit them. I think it got in his head after he started poorly. He made mistakes he hasn't made in 20 games...since the DIII team...I kept thinking this is the Uthoff from the exhibition. He just had that look like he wasn't confident. Great players bounce back and he's a great player. I think he would play differently next time...but I also think Fran would maybe give him a screen or two to help him get his shot. Like others have said...he needed to go to the rim a bit more.

Of course he did.
JU is a silent, gritty competitor. He is using that as personal fuel to motivate him for Sunday.

The free throw shooting by the Iowa guards come tourney time will decide success or failure. Having MG shooting FTs at crunch time always has worried me, but we will just have to hope for the best because he's going to be the guy handling the ball.

I love watching Uthoff play. He would be even better if he would stop using the fade away jump shot so often and attack the rim. He could get to the line almost anytime he wanted to.

Was thinking the same thing, the Maryland game would have been perfect to exploit that in the second half. Every time they were stepping into him.

I just wish Uthoff had 4 yrs to learn under Fran and staff, and 4 yrs of us fans getting to watch him grow. Would have been great, I truly hope we get to watch him in the Pro's.

Maryland could not shoot the three either. Those rims were very tight. They knew we were a better three point shooting team, and it would be a net win for them, and it was.

This changes nothing. Yes, the loss sucks, but there is no shame in losing a nailbiter at UMD. Iowa has proven it is a FF-caliber team, maybe good enough to win it all.

While Jarrod did not have a good game, his troubles were in no small part due to Maryland's defense. He won't have that kind of trouble today.

edenprairiehawk is right. I used to coach Jrod. He used to get chewed for falling away on his shots way back when. It might help in the pros, but he can cut it in half at D1. Also, since he is such a good FT shooter, he needs to attack more. So many benefits from it. He scores from line, fouls on key defenders, earlier bonus, drive and kick to shooters like Jok, Baer, and he is in position to rebound his misses.. I thought driving more was his key to upping his average this year.
He has really extended his range this year which sets him apart and opens drives for him and others and when teams don't help off him, then Jok et al score big.
What interests me now is since he made such improvement this year, if he continues to improve like this for another couple of years, who knows how good he can be. The kid is smart and a hard worker which are keys to improvement. Could not happen to a nicer kid and family.

Wow........... A bad game. I'm trying to think of a great player who's never had one.

JU can play on my team any day.
