Jay Wright Retiring

I am sure he has something planned. Maybe he takes a breather for a year. Maybe he does some analyst work or maybe he has some beer drinking buddies he wants to fish and/or play golf with. Maybe some grand children to fawn over? All of these are noble endeavors.

Jay is a tremendous coach and it wouldn't audprise me to learn he is a pretty down to earth guy as well. It also Wouldn't surprise me to see some coaches just say, how much is enough? He can still be close to the game if he wants, but he's made plenty of money, he can also go live the life he wants w/o the stress of worrying about recruiting and Wins/Losses.

I am sure many are envious in his profession.

I was surprised to learn he is 60 - he looks younger than that. Good for him.

Hope it isn't health reasons.

Interesting that this came abruptly as it did given that's not how these things typically seem to go with high profile coaches.

DeCourcy's twitter post is pretty dickish in my opinion. He acts like these older guys are still willing to spend 24/7 to coach young guys in shorts to play a game, why isn't Wright? Who knows why Wright wants to hang it up? And really, it's no one's business but his and his family's. Coach Wright has been all class as far as I'm concerned and I wish him well in his future endeavors, whatever they are.

I wonder what the perception of Jay Wright was - before his first National Championship? Not comparing him to Fran - but it took Jay a decade or so to finally get over the hump.

Jay Wright was in Sweet16 in his 4th year at Villanova. If you add in Hofstra years, I suppose you could say it took 10 years to get to sweet16---but he had Hofstra a non-powerhouse team into NCAA tourny in years 6,7 at Hofstra before jumping to Villanova.

I personally would rate what Jay Wright did at Villanoa as the best coaching job in NCAA. Mark Few is futher behnind at Gonzaga without any titles but is also outstanding. CoachK obviously also top coach. It is possible for top coach to take programs to levels never seen before.

Well, that would be a surprise, but it might be an indication of senior coaches growing weary of the new collegiate landscape.
Well if you scroll down the thread there’s still a ton of older coaches still doing well, Fran being one of them. You could very well be right. But what’s interesting is he didn’t seem to lose many guys and he had a great recruiting class coming in next year. It’s a grind, who knows.

The DeCourcy comment is completely moronic, IMO. "Is there enough downtime for college hoops coach?" What in the hell does that mean? Who here wouldn't trade their job for that of a college basketball coach in a heartbeat?
Is there enough downtime in any of our careers.....for the millions of dollars we are all paid? Oh, wait....
I'm not saying they don't put in work and time, but is is really any more than the lives we all chose? Good God.

I'm done now.
