Saw that his mom wished him a speedy recovery on the twitter. Anyone have any info on what the injury is?

Ankle injury, as I posted earlier. Doesn't sound too serious, but any time missed in camp is a lot to overcome for a true freshman in terms of playing this year.
If it turns out to be a setback make sure he don't play more than 4 games and save eligibility. I have a feeling he would be super prepared for 19 if this happened. Hope he can stay healthy because he will be a defense changer for us.

Tough break for McDonald. I'm confident he will receive world class medical care.

In his absence, it looks like the coaches are planning for meaningful contributions form true freshman LBs Seth Benson and Dillon Doyle this year. It should be interesting to see how they are incorporated as the season unfolds.

Please define meaningful contributions, in what capacity?

Outside of perhaps ST and scout team, meaningful contributions from true Frosh shouldn’t be expected at this level and at this program in particular.

Based mainly upon what I have been able to glean from public statements (and partly on chatter), ST seems like a given.

Beyond that, I would anticipate late game action when the contest has been decided and possible action in special packages. I would consider that "meaningful" because any live action presents development opportunities. It would also indicate that these players have climbed the ranks very quickly. As you may be aware, there are more than 20 LBs on the roster. It will be interesting to see what the depth chart looks like during NIU game prep next week.

Also, if guys work their way into the 2-deep ... that also affords themselves to practice with both the #2s and sometimes the #1s. Whenever a guy works with the #1s ... he tends to ascend the learning curve even faster ... or, at least, that seems to be the trend.

Being a productive member on the special teams is valuable because it gives them live reps ... but it also lets them earn the trust of the coaches.

Beyond that ... seeing action in clean-up duty still gives them live reps against an opponent who they don't know ... and they're having to apply all of what they know from film-work and practice. It may not seem all that meaningful to fans ... but it is huge as it relates to their development and acclimating them to the speed of the game.

Tough break. Hugely disappointing for Jayden and those of us excited to watch him play.

He'll be back. As we all know, it's not how many times you fall down, it's how many times you get up.

Good luck Jayden.

Didn't Doyle enroll at IA during the winter? So calling him a 'true freshman' may not be completely accurate, as he would have been involved in spring ball, and just possibly spent some extra time in the weight room.

I use "true freshman" to describe 1st year players who do not redshirt but you are correct, Doyle did enroll early and participated in Spring practice. I view Doyle a likely back-up this year. Benson arrived in June and appears to have a real shot of making the depth chart.

Still a true frosh as far as football eligibility.

Why not? Some athletes are more talented than others. Every year true freshmen at P5 school perform well.
Sure, the ones that Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, etc. recruit. Not so much Iowa, who's recruits aren't typically "college ready" from either a talent or physicality perspective.

Personally, I think both Seth or Dillon need a solid year in Doyle's body shop before throwing either one out into battle in the B1G.

While I don't know this for a fact, I'm guess Dillon has been working the Hawks weight program way before joining the team.

Great to hear! Hopefully he keeps himself "plugged in" with the team ... but also feeds his brain and grows in intellect during his first year. As a young man, he's a lot more than just a football player - even if he cannot physically participate ... he can always work on growing as a person!

I look forward to seeing him develop next year!

Glad to hear his surgery went well. Will be praying for a quick recovery. Rest assured Mom, he is in good hands.

Take a look at young Doyle. Don't you think he's already spent several summers in "Doyle's body shop", considering who his dad is?

I don’t see Brad Quast, if that’s what you’re asking.

Again, neither of them should be seeing “meaningful mins” this year, and if they do we’re probably in trouble.

Do they ever use PRP or stem cell for injury to joints or Tendons. My Ortho guy told me pro athletes do a lot. I got it in my shoulder and it works

First off, I doubt Dillion see's many reps during crunch time on the regular defense. I f he does, its because he's moved ahead of some pretty decent players. What I'm saying physically, is the kids pretty put together for his age, and heck his dad is one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the country. Don't you think he's been helping his son prepare for this for the last several years? Not to mention the kid probably already has a pretty good grasp on our defensive structure given he's an insider in the program, and grew up in Iowa City, and has no doubt had access to the program that most freshman don't.

I get all that, and I'm sure he's in great shape for an 18 year old ...but he still needs time at the training table and collegiate-level workouts imo.

I'd venture to guess that there is less than 5% of true freshman that come onto campus with day-1 ready physical attributes. Those kids are generally 5*'s (like Eppy) and typically end up at the blue-blood programs.

He can keep that leg elevated, and padded with his teammates in the Film Room ~ Get Well soon, Jayden.

While it sucks for Jayden to be injured ... at least it doesn't hurt to have a year of separation in terms of eligibility. If he heals up, puts in the time in the film room, and works hard with his brothers ... he'll pick up the D and put himself in a position to earn time on the field before he knows it!

Right now it appears as though Doyle and Benson will likely play at LB as TR FR ... and, as we look to the future, over the next two years we'll be graduating Mends and Hockaday after the '18 season and Jones and Welch after the '19 season. Those are all guys, who when healthy, have been on the depth chart. Thus, with those guys graduated ... there will be A LOT of opportunity out there to be had.

HGH works better for cell regeneration and injury recovery if done under strict doctor care and used for short durations after surgery , stem cell and platelet rich injections are also good. Not sure on the rules of what is legal for NCAA athletes.
