Nice story on a Great Hawkeye.

As you will read, Horner is taking precautions during the coronavirus pandemic. His immune system, doctors told him, would be weakened by the chemotherapy he underwent for testicular cancer.

Horner scored 1,502 points in his four seasons with the Hawkeyes from 2002-06. He is the program’s all-time leader in assists with 612, and ranks second all-time in program history with 262 three-pointers

It's hard to believe Jeff's name doesn't come up more when people throw out their top 2-3 all-Iowa teams, especially since he is an Iowa kid. Gotta believe the fact Jeff played during the Alford era has a lot to do with it. Oh, and then there's Ronnie Lester, BJ, Woolridge, and Dean-O.

Still, he was a great Hawkeye and rarely gets the recognition he deserves.

It comes down to the NW State loss overshadowing anything else they accomplished in my opinion. As B10 tourney champs they might be the best team in the past 20 years, but they never won an NCAA tourney game and that goes a long ways. Just lose in the second round like every other Iowa team generally does and Horner, Brunner, and Haluska are all viewed higher.

You're probably right.

Just shows how shallow minded people are predicating peoples career on one game.

That 2006 team was really good. 2nd place in the B1G regular season. 1st place in the B1G Tournament. #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. It was definitely a Sweet 16 type of team; maybe even Elite 8. And with a little luck, who knows? But, as we all know, that team had no luck in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament vs 14 seed Northwestern State.

Adam, Greg and Jeff are in the Top 17 of Iowa's career scoring list:

Even at the time a lot of people in this board strongly disliked him. My guess was part of that was that he didnt fit the quick, slashing mold some want in a PG, but also because he reminded a lot of people of Alford.

“Discretion is the better part of valor”

I think maybe the dislike of him is because he got his points by shooting a lot. His stats say he only hit 39%. For a point guard (making many layups), that is usually higher.

Point guards make a lot of layups? PGs have to usually rely on jumpers and 3 point shots so 40 percent is pretty good, there is a reason leaders in FG percent are always the big guys, even the ones that aren't great shooters.

2 Point FG% for our point guards post Woolridge.
Gesell 43.2
Horner 42.8
Peterson 42.1
Freeman 40.6
Toussaint 39.9
Oliver 39.4
Bohannon 35.8

I guess I was thinking back to high school PGs. LOL
EDIT: Did a little more poking around. Lester and Calabria both shot 47%, so I wasn't completely off. I think the 3pt shot has lowered the percentage, as guards can chuck it up from way out and still score the same pts per shot attempt.

Along with the end of his college career that we all know about and want to forget, Jeff had the end of game blowup with us a few years ago when he was an assistant at North Dakota. That hurt people's opinion a bit too. Too bad because he, Brunner, and Haluska are guys that should be celebrated, but because of the NW State game and Alford it seems that they are swept under the rug.

But, I think he's going to be at least a mid-major if not big school coach someday. I could see him parlaying this run into a lower D1 coaching gig in the next couple years. And from there he just needs one or two good runs in a conference tournament to be the hot newcomer for someone to take a chance. He already has more head coaching experience than Pitino did when he got hired at Minnesota 8 years ago.

What is surprising to me is that another Mason City guy in Dean Oliver, who is 5 years older, isn't further along in his career. Never a head coach. 10 years as an assistant coach, working his way up. I could see him either languishing behind Gard for a long time at Wisconsin, or being thrown out with the bathwater if Gard is ever fired. If he has a desire to be a head coach, he needs to start pushing for it to happen soon.

it will be interesting if/how soon Jeff makes the next jump.

he's having success at Division II. Will that spring board him to something better?
