I was thinking about Jeff Moe and how he played the game. More 3 point shooters on the team should watch his highlights. He absolutely craved the 3. He lived to shoot it and without hesitation. A true shooter's mentality. I think if players had that mindset, we'd see the best shooter's emerge. JorBo's already got it down. Now, let the others follow. The timid ones need to lose that mind block.

I recently re-watched the Iowa vs. Oklahoma NCAA tourney game from 1987. I forgot how stacked that team was. Moe was a gunner, fearless, the type of player that if on another team, you hate him. Loved watching him!

Gerry Wright averaged 6.5ppg for that team and finished 7th in scoring average. The next season Al Lorenzen averaged 10.6ppg and finished 6th.

I listened to Ron Gonder call an Iowa-MN game from the barn in Minneapolis. He said Moe was hot, and kept yelling at BJ Armstrong to get him the ball. After every make, he'd pump his fist and the crowd would boo. :D

People can debate about metrics, but I think the love affair with shooting 3s has kept a lot of players from developing a mid-range or near-the-basket game. Not everyone can become a good 3-pt shooter. Iowa currently has more than most teams, but a few players, like Wagner, Pemsl, Williams, and Cook, should focus more on the rest of their game IMO.

You saw The Big Shoe pumping his fist with your ears? ;)

Moe could play. Could hit the 3. Was a plus player on many levels. At times a blur on the court. Guarded. Hustled. Competed. Had fun and had a knack for a big moment. Lot of heart. Would take him again for sure

WOW! 11 points a game for your 6th scorer is a lot of punch. How many NBA guys on that team? BJ, Roy SR, Lohaus, Gamble? Did Horton get a sniff in the league?

The leading scorers that season were -

BJ - 17.4
Marble - 15.4
Bill Jones - 13
Moe - 12.9
Horton - 11.3
Lorenzen - 10.6
Hill 7.4

Lohaus and Gamble were not on the team that season.

My most vivid Moe memory was when, in a game at Michigan, he got so under the skin of Coach Bill Frieder, that he had him loudly swearing at him from the sidelines.
"Hey Moe, you're a f*ckin' a**hole!! Tell Moe he's a f*ckin' a**hole!!" - Bill Frieder, 1987

My recollection was that Jeff grabbed Glen Rice and intentionally fouled him on a breakaway. It was priceless that CBS got Bill on closeup on that one. Probably Frieder's finest moment...

Impressive, none the less. Had forgotten about Clarence (Bill) Jones. Now there was a guy who could have used a few protein shakes and 5 meals a day. Versatile player though.

Lorenzen did not finish season due to a back injury.

Ed played one season in the NBA, for Washington. And Roy, SR was not on that team.

not sure if inside joke ('cuz it's not Roy Sr. or Jr.?: Roy and Roy Devyn)

Roy Marble (played for Hawkeyes from 1985-1986 through 1988-1989 seasons)

Horton was drafted by the Bullets (Washington) but I think was only around a couple years. Moe was drafted by Utah, don't think he made it. Bill Jones did get a 10 day contract with the Nets. Wright got drafted but opted for the Marines. Les Jepsen was also on that team

I think drugs and lack of skill development in college kept both Roy Sr and Horton from playing in the NBA.

I think Bill Jones is one of the most underrated past Iowa players. He did whatever was needed on the court, much like Baer.

I believe Roy was busted his rookie yr, don't remember Horton's cup of coffee.

Didn't Bill Jones lead the CBA in scoring one season if not more?

Jones played in 37 games for Nets. More games than Marble played in his career. Les Jepsen played in more NBA games than Marble, Horton or Jones.

Don't follow the CBA or know details, but I think he was an all-star in the CBA.

Won't go into rumors about Horton and Roy, but the drug problem started before they left Iowa.
