New Story Jensen, Hawkeyes Looking for Answers

I'll proactively say that while Jensen's a great communicator, it doesn't always translate to gamer quotes — I picked out what I could from her postgame for the recap, but a lot of this stuff just makes more sense coming out of her mouth than on the page, so here's her presser.

Note to Jan. If your upperclassman aren’t getting it done, it really isn’t a delicate dance. You are the coach. Sit them down until they get it going. Might be tough decisions, but that’s what the head coach is supposed to do.

I agree with sitting them at this point but those girls were all really loyal to Jan and stuck around after Bluder left. They all could have gone and I think Jan wants to reward that loyalty. I think we are already seeing a reduction in minutes for Kylie. Lucy sat a ton today. O'Grady sat for Ava.

Bluder sold her soul for 4 years of Clark and let CC have the run of the place, even when it meant sacrificing minutes and the development of younger players. All those additional stats for CC aren't helping this year's team.

While I see your point, I somewhat disagree.

1. Lisa did keep her starters in too long but there would be several times that CC would be in with McCabe and Affolter along with other bench players.

2. The players that needed to be developed for this year all got tons of time last year. Sydney played major minutes, Kylie was in every game last year, O'Grady played quite a bit and showed she could score and Hannah obviously started. To me, the only one who I felt like got screwed in minutes was McCabe and I feel like she has been good on both sides of the ball this year. Jada, AJ, and Washington were just not going to be in the mix a lot this year for important games.

3. The freshman are the ones getting minutes now and are showing they will be really good in the long run. The girls who got major minutes need to step up and help these girls.

Agree on McCabe. She was never able to get in any sort of game flow last year.

My Deep Three from today's loss, the first losing streak in six years and the first time 2 games under .500 in the Big Ten in even longer:

1. What's this team's identity?
2. Who's Iowa's Garzon?
3. Goodbye, Top 25.

It's clear Iowa is not any sort of a B1G contender and should maximize the five frosh playing time as they are the future.

That's one of the funniest things I've read in a while. Development of WHAT players? The freshmen have proven they're the most talented players on the roster, and they weren't in Iowa City last season. The others? From Hannah on down, the veterans played plenty last season, but without CC--and Kate Martin--to hold their hands, they just aren't very good players. It's pretty obvious. But then I don't hold your comments against you because you obviously don't know anything about sports, basketball, or player evaluation. Maybe you should check out the speech and debate team.

Yikes - Jan said "we haven't been blown out." She's trying too hard to spin positives and it's interfering with her ability to make coaching decisions based on reality. Or, maybe her emotional bonds with the veterans prevent her from seeing that they are poor basketball players.

Just start McCabe and the freshmen and let the others earn their playing time. Then on to the next problem.

Losing close doesn't get you in the NCAA Tournament.

I did not watch the Indiana game but this far into the season I think it’s fair to say that Jensen has a different philosophy from Bluder with regard to tempo/pace.

JJ’s prioritization of the post position has led to slower play development and forced passes, especially the lob passes, too many resulting in TOs……and whatever happened to the high pick and roll which Bluder used to cut defenses apart?

That comment (in bold) is not a good sign IMO. In fact, I find it to be a "loser mentality".

I don't care for the constant substitutions. To me it's a sure sign of desperation by the coaches and leads to lack of chemistry for the 5 players on the floor. Hannah absolutely needs to be the 5. Indiana gave her the jumpshot from the key all game long and she refused the shot time after time. Kylie has no clue what to do with the ball in her hands. Sydney has regressed this season and I don't place all the blame on her surgery. McCabe is our best 3 pt shooter but we never seem to run plays or picks for her to get open. We still have time to save this season but first and foremost the constant different rotations has to stop.

I dont even care.if they make.the tournament at this point. Just give me something.enjoyable to watch.
Yeah, I decided this AM they are not very good and will probably not make the tourney. So, now I would just like to see/watch good fundamental BBall and a few wins.

If it's enjoyable then chances are they are winning. That would correlate to the NCAA Tournament.
Iowa could be playing good basketball fundamentally and not win at a high pace b/c of the youth and loss of CC. This team is becoming very hard to watch w/ all of the mental issues they have. This team has no floor leader, they all seem to play like robots and think too much. Sometimes you can overcoach. Good basketball is like a good orchestra....one or two get off key or out of rhythm and it doesn't sound good.

I agree on this. Hell I’d almost like to see them play a half with no offensive sets—just go pick-up ball. And if you get noticed not moving for two seconds you come out. Make them play the game of basketball and not THINK the game of basketball. It has to come naturally and flow. Spacing, movement, off-ball activity, etc need to come without locking up the computer (brain).
