Hi Guys/Gals,
I coach HS basketball and wanted to shoot our big guy a video of Jess Settles hounding the inbounder. Show the energy, etc. Turns out not everything is easily accessible on the interwebz because I'm having trouble finding a clip. If anyone has one or could guide me towards a link that would be great.

Thanks.

Are you serious? Half the time both his feet were out of bounds.

Settles was easily the greatest out of bounds ball defender Iowa has ever had, even if he broke every rule in the book. I absolutely loved to watch his teams play.

I think i remember them throwing the ball in all three of those guys faces. That was such bull and they should have been ejected. Knight was a heck of a coach and heck of an a**.

Kent Hill vs Indiana one year.....ball in face.
After that, Hill reached out and poked the Hoosier player in the face with his index finger. Foul on Hill, which was not well received by TD and all Iowa fans. Of course, it was at Indiana, so no penalty for the Hoosier.

Before Jess, it was Chris Street.

Would have been interesting to see Fran and Bobby coach against each other.

I cant imagine if Bobby did that to one of Frans players.

I'm surprised the OP hasn't been able to find a video of Settles guarding the in-bounds pass yet. I mean, Jess only played in an Iowa uniform for eleven and a half years, so you'd think there would have to be film out there somewhere...

Spot On! Settles was the best we ever had on the front end of press. Bowen was usually back end-great at stopping a break with combination size, vertical and athleticism.

Teammates and a few others that watched up close have said Settles back injury was so permanent and painful that playing at all made him the toughest guy they knew.

I dont remember Jaackes but Im pretty sure it was Dain Fief who hit Koch in the face.

Or maybe it was the other way around.

It was Michael Lewis of IU that hit Jaacks in the face and I think it was the '99-'00 season (Knight's final season at IU) instead of '98-'99. I remember I was watching that game when it happened.

Did it work?
Usually. The officials seldom called it. The exception was Hightower. It wasn't just Settles. It was what Tom Davis coached. That's why Knight told his players to do what they did.

What Knight did was extremely bush. What Davis did was legit, IMHO; it's like holding or pass interference in football. If the official isn't going to call it, why not do it?

98-99 was Davis last year.

Micheal Lewis does seem right though, him and Fief were both little turds.

Fife didn't play at NW, so it wasn't him that hit Koch. It could have been him that hit Jaacks, though I'm pretty sure most of the B1G would claim to be the one that hit Jaacks. I don't think Jaacks was well liked by opponents.

He was one of those guys you hate if they are on the other team and make you squirm if they're on your team. Kind of like Coverdale or Cardinal.

While those guys were good at the point, Ray Thompson was the best. REALLY long arms and a great athlete. Many steals for lay ins with him at the point.

Yeah I know he played at IU, I could have sworn Koch was hit against IU.

As I recall it, it was a closed fist punch by Hill, resulting in an ejection. Left a big red mark. However not 100% sure my memory is accurate.

No, it was Lohaus.

Then it was Kent Hill the following year and I thought Kent was going to take on the whole team and throw down. The place was on the verge of an all-out brawl. Dr Tom was flat out pissed
One example of
So good, Bobby Knight had his guys throw the ball at his face.
One example of why Booby Knight was a jerk.

Another vid of Settles guarding the inbounds:

Iowa Men's Basketball shared Big Ten Network's live video.
This should be fun
