The most common thought around the 1985 Chicago Bears is they were one of the toughest teams in NFL history. However, it seems they had a special way to take the edge off.

Over the weekend, former Bears quarterback Jim McMahon spoke at the Southwest Cannabis Conference and Expo in Fort Worth, Texas. He told the crowd that not only did some of the Super Bowl Bears smoke marijuana, but head coach Mike Ditka knew about their habits.

“[Former Bears coach] Mike Ditka would say, ‘Oh, all you guys, you pot smokers,’ That’s what he’d call us. ‘You pot smokers.’ ” McMahon said Sunday. “We’d say, ‘It’s better than being drunk out here. We’re still functioning.’ ”

Recently, McMahon has been outspoken in his support for legalizing marijuana. The former quarterback said it was marijuana that helped him get off prescription narcotic painkillers.

McMahon suffers from a number of injuries he attributes to his playing career, including depression, memory loss and early onset dementia.

McMahon also said at the conference that there’s “no doubt” he has chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the disease found post-mortem in former teammates Dave Duerson, Andre Waters and Junior Seau. Each player committed suicide.

Also at the conference was former running back Ricky Williams, who may be the face of marijuana in the NFL. Williams left the game in the prime of his career in order to keep smoking marijuana.
