Anyone watch the game yesterday? It was pretty good.

Joe T has apparently changed his name to Iowa Transfer Joe Toussaint.

Final score - Xavier 84, WVa 74.

Jack Nunge - started, 32 min, 7-9 FG's, 14 boards, 1 asst, 1 stls, 1 TO, 1 PF, 17 pts. Hit a big 3 down the stretch,

Joe T - did not start, 27 min, 3-11 FG's, 4 boards, 4 assts, 0 stls, 2 TO, 4 PF, 9 pts.

Joe is still pretty much Joe. But, he's getting the minutes he wanted.

Man, could the Hawks use Jack Nunge!

I watched it. I was always high on what Numge brought to the table. Funny, I’d bet the same posters that were critical of his play here (and there were A LOT of them) are the same ones saying we really miss him now..........Joe did not have a very good game. Nunge was a “difference maker”.

Looks like they bumped into each other yesterday ... :)

I agree several folks thought Nunge was terrible. He is a difference maker for Xavier and shooting around 50% from the 3-line. He would have given Iowa a presence in the sweet 16 last/this year(s). JMO

Nunge usually was terrible. He was just coming around to accepting his role as a center that primarily played inside and earning his minutes when he left. I never thought I'd say we could use Jack Nunge but the last two teams could have. But if a guy ever needed a change of scenery and some changed luck it was Jack Nunge.

Nunge was really playing well here when he got hurt. He would have made a huge difference in our program the last 3 years had he stayed and kept healthy.
True, but Iowa carried on. And I wouldn't trade the last 2 years for a chance at something better. I loved seeing the team achieve so much success, even with the painful losses in the NCAA tournament. Glad Jack was able to find a good place to land, too.

He has progressed as you would expect but really his per 40 stats now are not that much different than his time at Iowa. He’s improved fg% but more than “change of scenery” was “minutes” that made the difference. He was not terrible at Iowa and MANY on here said Iowa “got better” after his sophomore injury 6 games into the season that I thought was unfair to him.

I like watching both guys play. Nunge is finally healthy which he wasn't at Iowa. Joe T. remains a junk yard dog on defense and shows flashes on offense but is prone to the same 1 on 3 drives we saw during his time here. I would like to know what shoes West Virginia found for Joe as I have seen him play a few times with 0 banana peel issues when he does his jump stop.

Yes great to see Nunge develop and healthy. He would just start finding some consistency at Iowa and get hurt. Joe T is, as you say, Joe T. Looks like he has dropped his turnover rate by quite a bit, which makes him a far more useful player on offense. Good for both of them.

Actually, Joe is not getting the minutes he wanted.

On March 30, in a podcast, Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register stated that he talked to Fran after Joe announced he was leaving Iowa. Joe wanted 30 plus minutes per game playing time. Fran could not guarantee this because Fran is high on Dasonte Bowen. Fran told Chad that Joe was not miserable; he just wanted more.

So, is Joe currently getting his 30 minutes/game? Nope. As you can see below, in 5 of the 8 games so far this season, he played 21 or fewer minutes. Joe has played 30 or more minutes just TWICE in the 8 games.

17 vs Mt St Mary's
30 vs Pitt
21 vs Morehead State
20 vs Penn
34 vs Purdue
20 vs Portland State
19 vs Florida
27 vs Xavier

At Iowa last year Joe averaged 17 minutes/game. At West Virginia he is averaging 23.

Link to that March 30 podcast:

Jack's biggest problem at Iowa was that he was always playing injured,.. Glad to see him playing well for Xavier.
Don't think he ever played injured, injuries always permanently kept him from playing early in the season

Why did Nunge stick around for another year at Xavier. Did he score a lucrative Nil deal. This must be his 6th year, right? I would think he'd be ready to go overseas and get paid to play.

This just isn't true, unfortunately. He could have decent nights now and then, but his final fifteen or so games were a tremendous disappointment for how much he'd been built up as Garza's successor.

The move worked out for both parties. Nothing wrong with that.

We have vastly differ assessment. I agree his first two seasons he was not that good, but the last year he was excellent. I remember the Minnesota game in particular he played well.

Joe also played on a Ruckers summer league team with Xavier’s PF Zach Freemantle, a team that also featured Cole Anthony.

He was a popular whipping boy on this board. I always a huge supporter. Your opinion was a popular one but I felt then it was wrong and his play now is even more validation that I was correct at that time. I had some “debates” on here with SleepingDog about him as he was one of his harshest critics on his play.

Nunge had two more years of eligibility after Garza graduated.

He had 2 years because of the redshirt followed by the med hardship after getting hurt in game 6. It's not like they planned him as the successor when he and Garza came in the same class.

And while I fully understand his reasons for leaving, the Hawks would have been better last year and this year with Jack on the roster.

Also, just occurred to me, doesn't he have his Covid year left? Could be a 7 year player?

The second he went down injured I knew that year was over for the Hawks. He was the missing link for them to advance farther in the post season.

Well Mizzou, that is not entirely clear and not entirely right.

At the time we were discussing his play at the time. I did the numbers how many times. I think if you kick out maybe three games Jack's numbers plunged to almost unplayable. However, as the season progressed, and Jack began to play where he belonged-near the basket, his net value increased. If you recall, I also gave Jack credit for the improvement as it happened.

However, big picture the guy played better than I thought he could, although not in the B!G. As I said a few weeks ago, in words I cannot believe left my keyboard, we could use him right now. Although that's before Filip turned it up. But net gain with Nunge this year.

Really stinks that things worked out the way they did ultimately leading to Jack's departure.

I mean it's great that he's having success and I'm even more impressed by the fact that every Iowa fan is rooting for him as if they've adopted Xavier as a second team...........but its be really nice if he could be doing all that with us considering how desperate we are for a true 5 right now..............
