Joe Touissant just hit a game winner!

Do we realize how special that is folks?

This kid is a winner.

Keep up the gym work and the good work Joe
It's awesome that he came through when Fran left him in the game down the stretch. I thought perhaps that Fran would just revert to putting Conor and JBo in to be the guards at the end of games. But if it's going to be Toussaint's team, you have to let him ride at the end of a close game to give him the opportunity to handle it. And he did. I'm sure that probably wasn't the play they drew up, but he got off a good shot. That's why you want guys on the floor who can get their own shot if needed.

Seems like he's pulling up more 10 -15 feet instead of trying to navigate through all kinds of trouble at the rim. And he's making them.

Nice game, Joe.
I agree that he had a nice game and got some shots to fall and clearly the last one was huge.

I just looked at the box score and it made me wonder if Joe just set an Iowa record as a starting point guard who played 26 minutes......he had 0 Assists for the night. (Keegan and Patrick lead the team with 3)

That doesn't seem like a winning formula but it worked out I guess. Great road win for the Hawks.

Really like that Joe isn't driving into trouble like has in the past. He trusts his jumper and with his quickness, that is almost impossible to defend. While it wasn't the play Fran drew up, I would much rather see that than running Jbo off of ball screens 25-feet from the basket. Jbo was nails last night, but he is best served as a decoy in these late-game situations, as nobody is letting him loose for a clean look.

And that's fine because we should have at least 2-3 other guys on this team capable of hitting a big shot.....

The fadeawy 30ft 3pt shot Jbo took and missed was the shot uva was giving him at end. A close game like this is when you need a pg that can keep the ball in his hands and create his own shot. The tie up joet had before the game winnner was scary though.

I agree. I think the razor's edge between Iowa making or not making the tournament could be pulling out a couple more of these 50-50 games in the closing minutes or seconds. Fran seemed a little cranky in his post-game about that not being what he wanted, but I love that Joe T. made something out of nothing and knocked it down.

Credit Rebraca for playing tough last night. I have been a bit skeptical of his interior play, but he stepped up last night. Needs some FT practice, but I like his intensity.

I'm wondering if they need some more fine tuning on their set plays and in bound plays once the ball is in play, obviously including last second/end of clock situations.

If Fran is ticked about the execution, some of that can be chalked up to the inexperience of the moment, and of course Virginia’s defense, so that's on Fran and the staff to work that out.

But that goes back to the main point that this was a great learning experience for this young team.

When was the last time IOWA ran and end of game, end of half play and got a really great look from 10 feet or less?

JoeT was admittedly fortunate on the tie up, but was able to navigate a pick roll, and get a controlled wide open 8 footer,

When was the last time iowa hit a game winners like that?
(No Wieskamp 3 pt bank off the board doesn’t count, or JoBo dribbling until he lifts an off blance 3)

Fran used to let Mike Gesell, who could hit a jump shot with zero consistency, pretty much shoot it every time down the floor with a close lead back in the day. But now we have a point guard who can create a shot for himself and hit it and we don’t want him doing exactly that? Ok Fran

Having only 4 total team turnovers were a huge part of this game.

And compare Joe's numbers from the last 2 games.

Joe had 3 turnovers vs Portland State and Fran pulled him.

Against Virginia, Joe took care of the ball, had 0 turnovers, and was rewarded with:

* double the minutes (26 vs 13).

* being on the floor at the end of the game for the game winning shot.

Joe vs. Portland State
3 Turnovers
13 Total Team Turnovers
1-4 (25%) Field goals
0-0 FTs
2 Points
3 Assists
0 Rebounds
13 Minutes Played

Joe vs. Virginia
0 Turnovers
4 Total Team Turnovers
4-7 (57%) Field goals
2-2 FTs
10 Points
0 Assists
3 Rebounds
26 Minutes Played

Assists can be a fickle stat. They were several plays that should have been an assist for Joe but the shot was not made, including a great pass to Pmac for a bunny that he missed.

Somehow he also had 0 steals also even though he deflected a pass to a teammate that led to a run out.

That guy was 0-for a career

I j think it's odd that in the post-game presser Fran gets asked about the last play and he almost bristles when saying "it's not what the plan was" and then says "I can't talk about it". Well, Fran, my advice is to let Joe T. freelance more in these situations because that was the best non-play you have ever called in this situation in your time at Iowa.

PR advice to Fran--Just go with it. "We liked the match-up Joe had and thought he could get loose for a good look. Joe hit a big-time shot." The end.

I think Joe creates more steals for others than they do for themselves.

He's tough, tenacious, and very humble. When asked post-game what it meant to him getting the game winning bucket, he said it wasn't about him. It was about the team. Very impressed.
Sounds like the comment of an experienced player…

Did you all black out his game-winning play @ UNC? That was a big time move/finish in a huge game.
I’ve got nothing against Mike Gesell, and am in fact extremely appreciative that he, along with Woodbury, chose to stay home and help continue the resurgence of Iowa’s basketball program. He was an excellent facilitator (has any Hawk since surpassed the 6.1apg his senior year?), defender, and turned into a decent slasher. And, as you note, he had several huge plays that directly contributed to wins over his Iowa career.

What Gesell was not, was a great scorer. He never eclipsed double digits per game scoring. His 3pt shooting never broke 35%, his FG% never broke 41% on relatively low volume, and was a career 72% free throw shooter, which seemed to dip late in games. Which is why my original comment, in light of Bohannon throwing up a fadeaway three down one with 40 seconds on the clock and Murray never touching the ball, was really more of a dig at Fran’s late-game playcalling versus a dig at Mike

Fran couldn’t talk about it because it’s still a play he has in his arsenal if need be. He’s not going to break down what was supposed to happen so other coaches have intel on on of their end of game plays.
