I'm sure this has been discussed in other threads but I was wondering where Joey Gunther fits in after this year? He is getting better and better but I think most agree that Alex Marinelli will most likely take the 165 pound spot next year and most have Kaleb Young taking the 174 spot. Can he put on enough weight and try for 184 pounds? Does he have the frame to do that?

I know Gunther will battle hard and do his best to grab one of those spots, but as far as natural talent and potential, does he have the "ceiling" that Marinelli and Young have? I don't think Joey is going to be able to drop to 157 and take Kemerer's spot either. I really like this kid, he is a "gamer" so I was just wondering what other's thought about where he fits into the equation next year?

It doesnt look like he is a big 165 so unless he finds a lot of offense I dont see him making the lineup. He is either good quality depth or he transfers. That being said hard work has proved a lot of people wrong before. This may not be great for him but it is the problem you want to have if you want to win championships.

I love how some people just jump straight to the transfer route if they aren't starters. I think Joey can read the writing on the wall and I believe i mentioned this before, but it would be great to be able to have Joey wrestle a dual or two in a road/home weekend dual series and know what you're going to get out of him....i know this year we assumed we had a lot of black holes in the lineup due to depth, now we want our depth to transfer out...

Not a want, but it's something a lot of kids will do knowing they can't start but will be a solid starter elsewhere. Obviously nobody wants Joey to transfer

If Gunther was going to transfer I think he would have already done it. Marinelli may have even committed to Iowa before Gunther did. No secret both would be at 65.

The kid will battle for the spot and guess what, injuries happen and he is a guy who can cover a couple weights should he end up not starting. I think he will get a fair amount of action even if backing up.

Gunther was projected as 65/74 and I believe he commited before but don't know that for sure. Obviously there's no indication that he would leave and I don't think he would but nobody could blame him if he did.

Who said want. I would love for him to stay but I could see him wanting more mat time. You couldnt blame a kid who can start somewhere else if he left. Hopefully he stays.

Before a freshman season where he was a leading favorite to start? I think not. I fully believe he will be good enough to AA someday. He won't be the first or last high caliber wrestler who can't find a spot at Iowa. Assuming he doesn't win a spot outright of course.

Hey guys..he'said already whipped a Minnesota State champ from the Goofs.
He'll be just fine.

Gunther is already competing tough against good competition. He just jeeds to focus on continuing to improve and gain more confidence.

Not many pegged Patrick Rhoads or Topher Carton (just for most recent examples) as starters during their freshman seasons either. Things work out or like Spooner said, he wouldn't be the first high caliber wrestler who couldn't find a spot in the lineup.

I don't see where he fits in the lineup next year. The expectation is Kem 157, Marinelli 165 (albeit possibly undersized), Young 174 (albeit possibly undersized), Wilcke 184.

He fits in as a capable performer should the starters go down in some form or fashion, which is darn valuable in it's own right. He doesn't do enough offensively to challenge the others mentioned as far as what I've witnessed from all of them to this point. He's doing a fine job for the abilities he has at this stage, but most likely won't be on the NCAA podium this year, which of course should be the realistic goal for every starter at Iowa (should be.... but clearly isn't at all times, that's why we're not in the Title picture nor have been).

Maybe he improves leaps and bounds and keeps one of the other fella's on the bench. I wouldn't count on it, but never say never. Keep working hard and see what happens, all you can do.

Some thoughts as the wrestling season turns for the finish line. Joey Gunther will be in the starting line-up next season; Gunther consistently handles Kaleb in the room. Kaleb may be the odd man out in this mix of wrestlers. Marinelli will struggle to take over the spot at 165 lbs. It is possible the Gunther will could be at 174 lbs. next season, his upper body development/strength this season has been impressive.

Watched a lot of high school wrestling this season, saw Brands vs O’Conner at the Dvorak. O’Conner (four time state champion) to solid and battle tested for Brands at this stage of their wrestling development(s). But Brands is for ‘real’. A great ‘catch’ for TnT. Nelson has huge upside, but wrestling D1 for your dad and uncle. Questions?

From the Illinois state wrestling championships; top high school heavyweight in the country, Anthony Cassioppi, a junior with verbal commit to Northwestern, Hawkeyes could still recruit. Cassioppi fall or TF everyone throughout tournament (regional, sectional, state). Cassioppi has size and real wrestling skills, not the typical heavyweight shoving and pummeling. Something I never thought I could say, “He is fun to watch”, I’m a true believer.

Watched the S.E. Polk vs D.M. Valley match, great show and a great crowd. The drive from Chicago on game day was almost lethal. Noticed that a significant number of S.E. Polk kids were in the Iowa state final. Also attended the Illinois state wrestling championships, a ton of young talented kids. Not trying to draw fire, but most of the kids at the Iowa tournament would be hard-pressed to make it out of the sectional tournament. Illinois kids just too athletic. Maybe it’s the numbers. Not trying to poke-the-beehive, just talking wrestling.

Go Hawks!

Who is going to keep Marinelli from taking over the spot at 165?

Joey Gunther has been pretty impressive if you think about it. RS Freshman who is ranked and can hang with the big boys even though he was not ranked coming out of high school. If Joey developed some continual offense, he would be dangerous. Have no problem with Gunther at all.

Gunther had a bad tournament. Lost to Williams of Nebraska who he later beat in the dual. Also lost to a guy from Columbia.

Count me among those who didn't peg Rhoads or Carton as starters because I was hoping we'd have guys at those weights who were finalists instead of fringe top-20. As for Gunther, I like his mojo and his progression, but he's got a tough road. If he finds himself within spitting distance of AA but not a starter, no one could blame him for exploring his options. I wish we had more problems like that.
