About this event
Important note: due to our agreement with the Iowa City theater company helping us host this event, this film is free to screen only in Iowa.
The 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration of Human Rights is a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa, city of Iowa City and several community organizations. In an attempt to connect in this unprecedented year, we are working together to create a robust set of digital programming for the university and the community. It is the planning committee's hope that you will find some way to engage with the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration of Human Rights.
Using interviews and rare archival footage, John Lewis: Good Trouble chronicles Lewis' 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. Using interviews with Lewis, Porter explores his childhood experiences, his inspiring family and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957. In addition to her interviews with Lewis and his family, Porter's primarily cinema verite film also includes interviews with political leaders, Congressional colleagues, and other people who figure prominently in his life.
