Johnny Depp is facing a possible 10-year prison sentence in Australia for illegally smuggling his two pet dogs into the country last month. The actor and his wife, Amber Heard, are accused of failing to declare their pooches, Pistol and Boo, to customs officials and follow through with proper quarantine procedures upon their arrival Down Under in late April, when Depp headed back to work on the set of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean sequel.

The animals' presence was only discovered after the couple took the canines to a local pet pampering salon, where employees shared images of the dogs on social media.

Australia's Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce demanded Depp and Heard fly the pets out of the country by May 16 or face having the Yorkshire terriers put down. They obeyed the order, but now Depp could face a stiff punishment for ignoring animal immigration procedures.

Ten years for sneaking his dogs into the country seems a bit harsh, although he probably deserves to do a couple years in the joint for what he did to The Rum Diary.

Apparently a country that used to be a prison, has stiff laws. And yet they allow Dingo's to just walkabout stealing babies.....

Look at this face. Does that look like the face of a dog smuggler? Child molestor maybe, but not a dog smuggler.

Whatever keeps him from unleashing any more horrible films upon the world...

I obviously don't take my pets on vacation with me because I didn't know this was a real crime, is this a common law for countries to have?

It's common, but island or unique habitats are very big on avoiding foreign species being introduced in any way. Even Hawaii has reasonably strict requirements and quarantine rules.

Yes. Australia has much stricter laws than most. It mainly has to do with preventing destructive influences on the local ecology. The whole world is having a problem with people importing non-native animals, insects and plants into local habitats that have no defense against them.

I know bringing plants from one country to another is not allowed in most instances, I just didn't realize house hold pets were treated the same way.

I have to think that a good lawyer and a 6 or 7 digit fine will keep Mr. Depp from having to do any time in jail. He can afford it.

They can still carry diseases, etc. Pets usually have to stay in quarantine for a certain amount of time when going to another country - maybe a week, maybe several weeks depending on country of entrance. All shots, paperwork, etc, have to be in order.

I don't know how common it is to actually get jail time in Australia for this, or if most people pay the six-figure fine. Either way, Depp shouldn't be treated any differently than anyone else.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing him get some time in the clink. Something has to stop him from making more Pirates movies.

Johnny wouldn't do well in an Australian prison. The sisters would see to that.
