This pretty much sums up the state of Iowa’s offensive woes for me. Iowa only has 6 upper classmen in the OL room. 2 have battled injuries this season and 3 either are or are former walkons.

When your LT is a RS FR, your RG is a TR FR, and your RT is a walkon RS SO, that is too much to gameplan around. They just have to play better and that takes time, especially at that position. Tristan Wirfs took a bunch of lumps his TR FR season and now he’s one of the best OL in the NFL.

Wisconsin, Iowa State, Purdue, Penn State, and Colorado State are all in the top 10 in Total D or Yards per play. Iowa’s D has been outstanding. They are 9th in Total D and 4th in YPP.

Northwestern is the worst defense Iowa will play this season and should be just what the doctor ordered for this unit to gain some confidence. Both NW and Illinois are outside the top 75 in both Total D and YPP. Nebraska and Minny are improved on D but nothing like the 5 teams mentioned above.

Iowa is one of the youngest P5 teams this season. They are likely a year or two away from reaching their peak and played above their level this season. The first six weeks of this season was an awesome ride. I hope you enjoyed the hell out of it.

This is still a good football team that will win more games this season. There are plenty of reasons for optimism yet this season and potentially even bigger things looking ahead to 2022 and 2023.
