Josey Jewell named Big Ten LB of the year & defensive player of the year

He can still receive write-in votes on final Butkus ballott, no? I would think with all these accolades, it would more than persuade others to write him in!

Congrats Josey on both. Said it earlier for LB of the Year but that was before the DPOY was announced. It bears repeating again how excellent you are on and off the field. Just making sure I got this right: So the best linebacker in the BIG is also the best defensive player in the BIG and won the Jack Lambert Award for BEST LB in the nation but a different award for Best LB favored 2 linebackers from the same conference over same said guy? I know different people are voting for this stuff

BUT THAT IS A COMPLETE AN UTTER TRAVESTY OF THE HIGHEST PROPORTION

Obviously people who work around the conference, and in the midwest are more informed as to what players made the biggest impact in the conference. Still the Outlaw showed up large in Iowa's biggest games on the national scene, so no excuse for his being left off.

"The Butkus Award sets out to recognize those qualities that defined Dick’s career, heavily factoring the following five traits: toughness (playing through pain with a warrior mentality), on-field leadership (intimidating presence and respected tone-setter), competitiveness (passion, intensity and relentless effort), football character (work ethic, drive and determination) and linebacking skills (instincts, tackling, striking, balance, knee bend, shedding, cover skills, blitzing)."

It's as if they wrote it just for josey! what a shame
At least some folks have a clue :)

Yes he can.
"All committee members’ votes are submitted in secret and kept completely confidential. The selection committee coordinator compiles and tallies votes and only the vote totals are released to the public after a winner is selected. Voters are allowed to write in candidates."

My question is why don't they say who voted for who? That is some BS.

Clearly, you are correct
something to think about:

None of these Hawkeyes were named B1G defensive player of the year:

Desmond King,
Micah Hyde,
Adrian Clayborn,
Pat Angerer,
Chad Greenway,
Abdul Hodge,
Matt Roth,
Jonathan Babineaux,
Bob Sanders,
Jared DeVries.

Today, Josey Jewell was.
Thats surprising

Well deserved. Josey can take his place in the Hawkeye history books as one of the program's finest.

Anyone winning DPOY over Sanders is another Sham.

Nah, he had tough competition.

His junior year he had Michael Haynes who had a ridiculous 15 sacks, tying Penn State's record.

Senior year he had Will Smith who recorded 10.5 sacks.

I'll give you 15 sacks a year but the Hitman knocked out at least 10.5 players on opposing offenses in his senior year ;)

Damn, I forgot how good the 2005 Big 10 linebackers were.

Greenway lost the B10 Defensive POTY to AJ Hawk and lost the Butkus award to Paul Posluszny.

Some good players that year.
