Josh Dix on why he didn't enter the Transfer Portal & potentially get paid HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS PER YEAR

2025 Iowa has 5 players ranked in the top 20 in the portal.

2024 season ends 1 game above .500

Figure that out
The players are ranked so highly because they got into the portal early (due to coaching change) so there weren’t that many players in the portal.

Portal officially opens today, so there will be a TON of talented guys entering to bump dudes like Sandfort down.

That being said, Owen and Dix will still be highly highly valued recruits this cycle and can likely command 7 figures

This is some wild boomer energy. They're teenagers and kids in their early 20s that have the potential to put away $100K+ to start their lives post-graduation. For some, it could be the difference between graduating with no money and being able to buy a house with cash after they finish college. They would be negligent not to secure as much money as they possibly could. Look at the state of the world. We are marching towards an era of techno-feudalism. Dislodge your head from your colon. If you had a child that was a talented athlete, you'd be advocating for them to do the exact same thing.

You are bit silly to bring Boomer energy into this,

I don't begrudge Dix at all for going for the money and also going to a team that is more of a surefire winner vs a rebuild. This is Dix's last year coming up and it makes 100% sense he wants to be on a winner. Now if his Family was a big part of the issue---he will end up closer to home. If he ends up further away then that wasn't as big a factor.

Dix came back last year at a pay discount to market value , but not for free--he did get paid. He also came back for love of his teammates, Univ of Iowa, Fran/coaches, and the thought they were going to be better than the really were. They weren't very good, Freeman quit on them, Fran put together a bad roster, Fran got fired, teammates are mostly gone, and NIL money from Iowa probably not going to be competitive. All reasons to leave but I doubt Fran being gone is the biggest reason on that list.

As for NIL, it never made sense that coaches got millions and players almost nothiing. That system was corrupt with under the table payments. That said all the money that didn't go to players funded Title9 sports, so if you are a big proponent of women's sports, then you should have loved the old system. I'd like to see revenue sharing for coaches, players, and Title9 and a level playing field for Iowa.

BTW, it was Boomers and even older folks on the Supreme Court that blew up NCAA no pay model, so not all older people are stuck in old ways.

People are upset by this? His coach is gone and he has value on the NIL market. It sucks that this is how college sports are now but I don't begrudge him at all for doing it. I doubt there is a single person here who would do anything different.

not upset.

just pointing out how times have definitely changed.

college sports are pro sports.

Players are one year rentals; you may or may not be able to sign them the following year. Student athletes, my ass. ;)

I think the point here is that many of us used to LOVE that collegiate athletes mostly played for love of sport. Now, however, it’s pretty much ALL business (ie $), just like the pros. On top of that, at least in pros there’s contracts, salary caps, etc. no such thing is college. Transfer as often as you like, to highest bidder, with almost no checks and balances. 😞

They played for love of sport and they wanted to get the degree after 4 years.

Now? It's all about the benjamins.

I hope the payrolls of the final 16 teams get released. $1.5M, which was Iowa's payroll, simply does not cut it.

the only players in the portal are those whose coaches got fired, correct?
The portal opens today for 30 days March 24th through April 22nd. Yes, before this only players whose coaches were no longer there and graduate players. Starting today anyone can enter. Now players could announce they were going to enter the portal, but officially could not enter until today.

Absolutely. He should go get paid. Already wasted a year playing for a bad team. Don't know how much his salary was this past year, but doubt it was close to what he could have gotten on the open market.

seeing the word "salary" no longer phases me.

i just laugh at what's going on.

Ah yes, the cry of the ignorant, blame it on the Boomers. Go blow your nose.

Nothing will keep Iowa from offering Josh and others NIL $$$, although it will need to be competitive with other offers. I hope McCollum will reach out to some of the former players and recruits quickly.

Like I have said before BMc should talk to them and if max money is their only priority, good-bye. Nobody on this team is a game changer IMO. I cannot imagine going on a job interview and the first words out my mouth were "How much?". Insanity.

It's a big part of the reason my enthusiasm for college sports has decreased significantly.
