I’m already concerned about our potential lack of production and inexperience in the post. Realize it’s only one game, but vs a team with no one over 6-7 I’d expect a bit more domination inside. Again, not that we needed it last night, but we most definitely will require rebounding and defense come conference play. Offense not so much, unless it’s from the Murray boys.

Getting nervous about that aspect of the Hawks game. Hope they (Rebraca, Riley, Josh) show signs of life over the next 5-6 games.

I somewhat agree. Would have like to have seen a lot more production from Rebraca. Keegan did great but they must find a true Center to bang around with the Bigs of the B1G or they will simple back us to the rim and stuff it every possession.

I think Rebraca is still feeling his way around this team and how he fits into the concept as a secondary offensive option. He was the primary option as North Dakota, but at Iowa he's going to be complementary and that's something that might take a few games to adjust to.

I'm not looking for him to be a consistent double-digit scorer. If he rebounds, plays decent defense, sets good screens, makes smart passes, then whatever points he gets will be a welcome addition.

The 5 position will be made up of role players. Mulvey and Josh O will probably have to provide some quality minutes as the season goes on and be able to provide a physical presence when Iowa faces super sized front lines. Rebraca didn't show too much, but based on his experience I think he will be alright. I kind of look at that spot as a combination of 15 fouls and a double/double between the 3 guys with Rebraca getting the majority of minutes.

Honestly, Rebraca is going to be a 3rd option at best on offense with the starters, competing with Pat for that 3rd spot while the other is the garbage man. I think Keegan and JBo take lead on scoring with Joe running the show.

Much like pretty much every previous year, I'm not concerned with the offense. And honestly, I'm not concerned that much with interior defense.

I'm concerned that the wings play with the intensity/tenacity they need to on the defensive end. If they do, they'll have a pretty decent defense. If they don't, it won't matter what they get inside.

We are going to struggle down low all year. We are undersized not only with height but with weight. Good thing is we have some guys that can get off the floor for rebounds and have huge wingspans to disrupt shots.

That's about how I look at it too, but I'd granulate that to a combined 15 fouls, and at least 10 pts / 13 rebs per game. Throw in at least 2.5 blocks per game combined would be a cherry on top.

I too am a little concerned, but with the Murrays, Patrick and Filip, we are plenty long quick and athletic enough to be able to defend and rebound against most traditional post/center opponents. Rebounding is 50%+ effort and technique, not just innate height and size.

I liked a lot of what I saw last night. It does appear that we are very weak inside. Against teams with true big men, I'm worried about foul trouble.

Its a weird idea to bring in an undersized not real athletic guy whos primary skill is scoring and then expect him to defend and rebound.

The way to counter that is to make entry passes difficult with extreem ball pressure, switching screens and handoffs and then double team it when it does go in.

We have the guys to play this way but Fran isn't interested in sacrificing offense to get there.

Quickness is a big overlooked factor in rebounding.

Timing and length as well.

If Fran would just play the Murrays together as his primary front court Iowa would have no issues rebounding and would be able to block a ton shots.

Most teams get their point production from forwards and guards. It is a question of numbers. Garza was a rare offensive center for Iowa and even he scored a lot of his points from outside the lane. Most of Longwood's points came from jump shots, even by their bigs. It is just the way the game has changed.

This is why I'm not hugely concerned with the C position. Give me athletic G/Fs all day, a couple that can light it up from outside and have all of those guys be able to guard the wing.

The rest will work itself out.

Sometimes Big Guys struggle when playing against smaller guys. They are used to banging big bodies and you can't really do that against skinny 6'7" guys or you get called for a foul. Rebraca can play physical and will be very valuable in the B1G season. He is a little tentative right now but I do believe he will come around.

Yep, the BIG has a higher number of actual post players than most conferences and its like 3 guys.

Most teams have a little more size in the middle than Iowa but I'd gladly trade that for the quickness and skill we have.

I mean Iowa had the most dominant big man in the country the last two years and it didn't matter a bit against a team without a true big and a bunch of athletic wings.

I believe that center went for 36 points and 9 rebounds.
My point is that Iowa got run off the court. That game was hard to watch because Oregon just moved faster, got all the loose balls. Iowa just looked so flat. Slow.

Running the offense through Garza only works best against big 10 type opponents and offenses. Everyone’s curious to see whether the type of hybrid offense McCaffrey wants to run is going to work here, because it appears now that he really does have most of the pieces assembled. Iowa under McCaffrey, if he had the specific talent over the last 10 years, especially on the perimeter, should have looked like Oregon did last year. Very fun to watch. Antithesis of wisconsin or Purdue, etc.

Bigs are a thing of the past unfortunately... its all about 6'6 to 6'9 athletic wings that can shoot and play solid D. Its crazy to think, but we could actually be a better team than last years... potentially if things go well.
