Josh O

I mean Iowa had the most dominant big man in the country the last two years and it didn't matter a bit against a team without a true big and a bunch of athletic wings.
True. Luka dominated his matchup and Iowa still got beat badly.

Would have been nice to see how Iowa would have faired in that game with a lot more Toussaint, Ulis, Perkins and Kris Murray to go along with Weiskamp, Luka and Keegan.

Does anyone know how josh has actually been doing in practice? I was hoping to see some good minutes out of him this year but it looked like he didn’t do much in the exhibition game either.

It appears to me that Fran intends to redshirt both Ogundele and Kingbury. That may change if Mulvey goes down with an injury.....

Once you enter a college basketball game, barring injury, you have burned a year of eligibility.

Football has the four game rule, but basketball has no such rule.
Maybe I’m just thinking of the medical redshirt rule that we used with JBo a couple years ago.

And OR shot almost 56% for the game. Iowa did score 80 points but other than Luka, Iowa was hampered. Luka got his points, the rest of the team got stopped. Meanwhile OR feasted on Iowa's zone.
Hopefully this team can do what very few, if any, of Frans teams have been able to do. Play some DEFENSE. Both interior and perimeter.

he could have played, but is dealing with some back issues and they opted not to play tonight, he'll be available Friday.
Didn't even notice until I rewatched the game that he was in street cloths, so sounds about right....

I highly doubt that Fran would redshirt a walk on. I know that Nick Baer did, but that was at Baer's insistence not Frans idea.

I think Rebraca is still feeling his way around this team and how he fits into the concept as a secondary offensive option. He was the primary option as North Dakota, but at Iowa he's going to be complementary and that's something that might take a few games to adjust to.

I'm not looking for him to be a consistent double-digit scorer. If he rebounds, plays decent defense, sets good screens, makes smart passes, then whatever points he gets will be a welcome addition.
I totally agree with most of this. My only concern is that in the albeit very limited action of 2 games vs undersized opponents he's been pushed around and beaten underneath. He doesn't really have the physical presence under the basket that I thought (hoped) he'd possess. If Josh can come in and be a factor one thing he won't be is pushed around and by all accounts he's a good athlete for a 6'10 240lb big man. Keegan definitely plays bigger than Filip does.

I agree, and I hope Josh plays Friday. I think the next five games, Fran should give josh 2-4 minutes per half. Just so he is mentally and physically used to coming in and has some experience with our current players when we need him vs. Virginia, Illinois and Purdue in a few weeks. Also, I think we need to reward him for all the weight he worked so hard to lose for this season. He should be in the rotation even if it's a small role most games. Riley has looked pretty lost the last two games so I think there's a greater chance of Josh being a contributor than Riley this year.

I too want to see Big O get more minutes. But at least with him out last night we got to see more of Kris Murray and see he is capable of playing the 5 in a "smaller" line up. But we're going to need Big O's beef in conference play.

I bet Tuesday was a Riley game and tomorrow will be a Josh O game

Guys....and I realize some folks don't pay a whole lot attention or maybe only have time to give BB a passing glance at the topic but Josh and Mulvey are very good talents and they are big but newbies too. Josh will be OK and playing and Fran said by tomorrow...

Here is what I said in another thread:

"I also think folks are undermining the impact of our bigs, Mulvey and Josh O matching up against the bigs of the Illini, Dickenson, and PU and any others. Give them these initial games as a learning curve. I think Josh O will back tomorrow and I like him and Mulvey if for nothing else .......big match-ups....they are big bodies. Body to body, along with Rebreca and the Murrays. Dang, I like the quickness defensively of Rebreca and Keegan and the team. They are so quick and move their feet very well to stay in front of their defenders. Just make em feel uncomfortable when they are shooting the ball.....trust me.... that works."

I watched Dickenson last night playing Buffalo and he got his points but Buffalo has really no one size wise to match up. Dickenson played the whole damn game too to beat Buffalo.....by 12 points only. Buffalo scored 76 points too.

I believe the thought process for Kingsbury and Laketa all along has been to redshirt them. See how they develop in practices and the non-conference 'warm-up' games, and make a decision about their prospects for being with the Hawks long-term.

Ogundele, I think he'll play and contribute this season.
Agreed with this. Plus Big O sat last year and so he needs the minutes. He could use his redshirt year down the road if needed.

I think even with the weight he's lost, he's more like 265 then 240. Thats fine though we'll need the big boy vs Purdue, Illinois, and Michigan

Fran said Josh had a back issue, but hopes he'll be able to play tomorrow.
Exactly, which is why he was in street clothes. Hopefully he'll be able to get in there. He needs this time now before we start playing the BIG boys to get some game time in and get in sync with his team mates....

I thought I read somewhere that he was in the 260's when he arrived on-campus and dropped it into the 240's over the summer.

I'm pretty sure he was around 3 bills when he got to Iowa last year. I think around 260 or 265 now. He's listed on the roster at 285lbs currently but thats probably a few months old.

Need to find out whether Big O can contribute. I don't know. Going into his third year, he needs to show some signs that he can at least give 5-10 min of quality play.

So what if he's the next Zion Williamson? Doesn't he play at that weight?

He's not. Generational talent like that stands out too much to be sitting on the bench. I'm hoping more of a Caleb Swanigan who took some time to get his weight and conditioning under control, and then was an all conference beast.

All good. I actually DO believe that Josh COULD be alot better then people think, but its time to start finding out....
I do too. I think he has the most raw talent of the 3 bigs by a healthy margin. Hopefully the conditioning issue gets resolved in the coming months.
