Josh Sash, Bryston Williams & Connor Wheeler (from Drake) + Luke Barnwell (from Texas Tech) + Jesse Shaw, Xavier Kurth & Kyle Denning on Ben's Staff

Josh is Tyler Sash's brother, of course

Talk about some ties to the U of Iowa with BMac in photos with Tom Davis, repping players name in the presser and following Iowa like an NBA team! Then Josh Sash, who bro was an amazing SS for Iowa and prob could've played bball here too, if these combos don't get you excited not sure what will. There surely won't be a lack of desire to turn this around given the connections to the program -- excited to hear if Gatens and Spurlock are retained, how many assistants can we have?

In NCAA Division I men's basketball, a team can have five coaches (the head coach and four assistants), following a rule change in January 2023 that allowed for two additional assistant coaches.

If that's the case, then Gatens and Spurlock are out.

I guess there could be one opening if Jesse Shaw is hired.

Interesting. Jesse was the Recruiting Coordinator for Ben at Drake.

* He was on DeVries' staff
* He was on Fran's staff
* He was responsible for helping Brock fix his jump shot
* He's a former player
* He's #10 on Iowa's all time scoring list...1,635 points (4 yrs: 2009-2012; 128 GP, .415 FG%, 12.8 ppg; 239 three pt goals)

he can't be that bad ;)
He was also on Bruce Pearl’s staff at Auburn.

I think your last two bullet items are why most fans want him to stay. That said, those two things say nothing about his ability to be a good assistant coach.

I will fully support whatever decision BMc makes on assistants. But Gatens will always have a special place in my heart for the role he played in helping bring an end to the Lickliter era (threatening to transfer).

To be fully honest, I still feel that its best to start over roster-wise - but glad Koch is staying.

And going off that, its probably best to avoid any holdovers from the previous staff too. Former Iowa player and Drake assistant, or not.

🤷‍♂️
💯Absolutely agree with this. Start fresh with staff you know and trust to get the job done.
