Jou Toussaint---8 Assists in 16 Minutes Today

The pregame buzzer sounded, which is when the players stop shooting and head back to the bench for the pregame introductions and National Anthem. And yet Joe T kept firing up three pointers from the wing. One miss. Ball. Two misses. Ball. Three misses.

The entire team is around the bench now and yet Joe T calls for it. Ball.

Hits the three and gives himself a reassuring Tiger fist pump.

Dude is a winner.

His on ball D is really good and very disruptive for our opponents. I was also disappointed he did not see the floor for long periods and that’s not a dig at Bakari who is giving good minutes too.

We have not had a player with his abilities in some time at the point.
He came out shortly after his telegraphed cross the court pass that got stolen when PSU was making a run. His yes plays are starting to outpace his no plays.

Joe T is gonna explode. He's on the verge. More consistency and look out. But his dogged effort on D is a thing of beauty regardless of anything else. The fact that he didn't play much the second half against MSU, I'm afraid, may have been the difference in that loss. With Joe in his jersey the first half, Winston had ONE point. With Joe T on the bench in the second, Winston scored 20-some. What the young man gives up on the offensive end at times is usually more than overcome by what he gives the Hawkeyes on defense--IMHO. (And in Mr. Winston's opinion, too, I would imagine.)

Toussaint has had a nice first year. He is getting better. The only thing really separating him from being a part-time player from a real impact player is the ability to knock down shots consistently. He will just not be able to play huge minutes if he can't shoot. I would bet on him being able to do it. But I don't think he'll ever be a huge scorer just due to his size.

His defense has been real good. As far as Winston goes the other night, Winston hit 2 3's in the first 5 minutes of the second half with Toussaint in the game. Then Winston proceeded to hit 3 more after Evelyn came in. And Iowa played a bunch of zone in both halves against MSU, as they do against most teams. So I don't know that I'd blame one defender for Winston going off. He was the Player of the Year in the league last year and is one of the best players in MSU history, which is saying something. He has scored points in bunches against a bunch of teams.

He got fouled on at least 2 drives today, and he got 0 calls. The B1G refs really don’t give him any inch, and just assume because he’s small it’s fair play. The thing is, he’s great with controlling his body and in the league he’d be getting a foul call every time.

If you drive into the lane, the refs allow more contact so he needs to adjust to that. He will.

Right but Joe T got rocked on the second no call. To your point though, he needs to work on his floater instead of jump shots. With his quicks and handles, an 8-foot floater would be absolutely lethal. Then when he develops a 10 to 12 foot pull-up jump shot, he will be unstoppable.

C-Mac plays over 30 minutes per game despite scoring less than Toussaint. I also disagree that it's size holding his scoring back. IIRC Dean Oliver was listed at 5'10 and scored pretty well. I don't think you'd have to look very hard to find a lot of B1G players that were 6' tall and could score.

I love Joe but he needs to work on dribbling behind his back, not very smooth at this point.

He is also really solid at off the ball help. Creates havoc with other teams low post.

I like that this discussion is about
He is getting the Moss treatment at the end of games.
Joe is a true freshman. He is being treated like good one but with experience on the bench.

Joe will be fine. Getting the time to watch the game from the bench with the coaches is also helping him grow and learn. He will be better in the future for it. I am very happy that he isn't the only choice at point.

FYI. Joe has 30 more turnovers in 300 plus fewer minutes. I’m loving the improvements Joe has made this year, but he’s not deserving Conner’s minutes.

Very true, but in his defense he’s in his first year play Big 10 basketball. Connor is in his 3rd year. If Joe improves as much as Connor has, we’ll be in great shape. I think back to Jordan’s freshman year and some turnover issues in Big 10 play. It’s perfectly normal for freshman point guards to have ups and downs. It will pay dividends going forward

I will be shocked if he is here 4 years. Where is the playing time coming from next year?
Fran is not good when having a deep bench in regards to subbing/rotations. he will get frustrated and leave.
joe watches the same game film we watched. He sees himself make one mistake and he gets yanked but others get chance after chance.
There is no reason to not get him experience at the end of a game with a double digit lead. He defends and makes free throws. You can sub offense for defense if you’re overly concerned. But to start a kid both halves and play well but not get to play any of the final 12 minutes is silly.

Joe has made a significant improvement since the start of the year. So has Bakari. Fran has done a great job bringing Joe along and teaching him.....my belief is that Fran see's Joe as the future at PG and that he wants to use this year to make sure Joe plays the game the right way, the way Fran knows he is capable of playing, and that Joe doesn't develop bad habits....now is the time to stop or eliminate bad habits (while he is a freshman with other more experienced PGs on the roster).

Joe T is improving and we are getting to see very positive minutes from him. His, and therefore this teams, future is very bright.

I also think that Joe should get more minutes late in the game....specifically at MSU, BUT Fran obviously knows better......putting an emphasis on using experienced players at crucial times is a good practice.

If you think his behind the back dribbling isn't smooth then it's unlikely he's going to improve at it. His game is centered at being a ball-handler and he's been doing it probably his whole life. He will improve over time with more minutes logged. His handles are just fine.

Joe sometimes does a play that catches your breathe like no player has done for the Hawks in years and years. Sometimes makes frosh errors, but he's so good and it's clear he's going to be the player opposing teams hate in a year or two.

I think Joe is going to be a player opposing teams will think has been here for 8 years and will hate having to face
Posted then read your comment... totally agree. He will stick the 4 years and by senior year will be loathed :)

I wonder if he is trying to prevent the loss of confidence, like what happened with Mike Gesell during his freshman year. It started at Iowa State, when Gesell was a freshman and he missed the free throws that would have won the game for us and had a key TO in the last minute of the game. Sadly after that Gesell had a clear loss of confidence in pressure packed situations like at end of close games or halves.

Gesell got better in those situations as he matured but still had issues which was the reason why other players would usually have the ball in their hand(Marble, Clemmons) in those situations.

Someone should show old Ronnie Lester films. Lester was great at driving and stopping to pull-up with those 8 ft shots. That said, I am more comfortable with him in the game now.

If I recall correctly Fran rarely used him at the end of games again that year. Great for confidence.
Never stopped him from playing ogelsby at the end of games. It’s funny that Fran always saw him as a great shooter and the next one was going in but heaven forbid you make one bad cross court pass.

I certainly hope so but minutes will be significantly in short supply next year even with redshirts. With Bohannon coming back next year garnering more than 30 minutes and two new guards coming in. You do the math.
