Junior National Results Day One

Gfeller InjDef out it looks like. I was looking forward to seeing Rudy Yates take him out back to the woodshed. Anyone know what happened to him?

Nelson is getting better and better. I think he's a year away from being very good(placing here).

I just looked at 145 again and I think I'll be eating my words(which I'm very happy about). This is probably the weakest weight in juniors. There isn't anyone in this bracket that Nelson doesn't have a chance to beat.

Anybody see Wag's match? Hey Omaha, I reverse my earlier ruling...Courtney ain't too damn bad. Vega and him are close but Vega needs a few more cheeseburgers.

Not head scratchers when he's done it multiple times. I see what you are saying though. McKee does drop the occasional match here and there.

True. Yates may make the finals now with Gfeller out. I'd much rather be on the bottom side of the bracket. He'll have a good one with Storr here soon.

haha that's funny. I bet Vega sure wishes he was back down at 13 with guys his size. Teasdale has beaten Courtney a few times this spring so if he can beat Mattin he should be in the finals.

Great win for Teasdale against a very game Mattin.

ISU recruit Parker beats Murrin pretty good. Parker has really turned it on this last year.

Quarterfinal - Kanen Storr (Michigan) won by decision over Rudy Yates (Illinois) (Dec 11-8)

Yates loses to Storr 11-8. You can tell he isn't much of a freestyle guy. Gave up a lot of points in positions he put himself in that he had no business being in outside of Folkstyle type scrambles.

No excuses though, Omaha you were right. I may have been a little homerish in predicting him beating up on Gfeller.

Just going to say...I Heart Rudy Yates. Yea, he lost but damn that kid is so game.

I do it all the time. Yates is good no denying that. He honestly just looks to little for the weight class. Not to mention that Storr is very good.

I missed this one, was watching Yates/Storr. What happened?

Joe Lee got thrown and landed on his head (?), didn't see it either but he was able to get up after being down on the mat for quite a bit...has defaulted out.

I agree Chief. I coached him at the kids level for a few years and he was on our Schoolboy duals team one of the years I coached it. I'm close with his family as well and my first education related job was actually at the middle school he attended. I try to avoid being a homer with IL kids on this board but with some I can't help it. He is truly a great kid and I root for him 100% of the time when he is on the mat.

I just wish he were going to Iowa and not UNI, but I can understand why from both sides of the coin.

In agreement all around. His style of wrestling does not translate as well to freestyle either. It's probably why this is the first time seeing him at Fargo. I will have to ask why he entered at 138 though. He can make 132 without much trouble and I would not be surprised one bit to see him at 125 for UNI at some point.

I will too except against Iowa. The world needs more Rudy Yates

Probably trying to build muscle and weight and doesn't want to interrupt that process for Fargo. He already knows where he is going so not out there to impress...just get better.

Of the many conversations I've had with Rudy's dad some have been about the kid not wrestling freestyle (actually urging him to give it a go). Before high school he got freestyle tech'd (a bunch of exposures while trying to secure a td) by a guy he would probably return the favor to in folkstyle and decided he didn't like the rules so that was it for him. I'm glad he gave it a go this year even though you can tell he's a novice at the style and got out freestyle'd in his loss. Kid is a dynamo on his feet.

*During one of his kids level state finals matches he was the underdog and we did do the "Rudy, Rudy, Rudy..." chant.

Yes, but you can see where he would have an edge on a guy like McKee in folkstyle. He was in on McKee's legs whenever he wanted to be. Same with Degan. He's a firecracker and will be in college...a novice who is finishing top 6 in the nation wrestling up a weight in a tough weight class.
