Can someone explain what all the PC fuss was about? I dodged it up until today because it got Oscar noise (always a bad sign) and it was presented as a piece of propaganda.

It might be my favorite war movie ever. i hate most of them so that's not saying a lot but I thought this was really well made.

I guess.... Oh no....... was I brainwashed? God bless America

There's been a better war movie since The Delta Force starring Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris?

I loved it as well and I do not hate war movies. The only one that might have been more intense is lone survivor

I liked American Sniper too. It doesn't even come close to Saving Private Ryan as my favorite war movie but it was decent.

Is Private Ryan considered historically inaccurate? I thought it was acclaimed for its realism. (need that shruggy emoticon back)

The opening scene is very accurate. But in the end you have a mission that never happened, leading to a town that doesn't exist, and fighting an opponent that was nowhere near American lines. Combat for us in bocage foliage opposed to the British-Canadian troops out east was entirely different.

German panzer formations were sent into the relatively open fields against the British-Canadian armored formations in and around Caen. Further west we went against tough German infantry and elite Fallschirmjaeger. While we were inching our way through the Hedgerows the German panzer forces had turned the land around Caen into a virtual shooting gallery.

Moreover the German unit depicted in the last attack, 2. SS Das Reich, was one of the most formidable the Germans fielded. British-Canadian tankers dreaded fighting them. Imagine a British movie where they assault and take Omaha Beach. The Germans sent two SS Heavy Tiger Battalions to Normandy, both were in the Caen battle area.

Thanks. I guess on reflection it is that opening that I remember getting the acclaim.

I think every American High School student should watch the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. Namely to appreciate the sacrifices made on D-Day. But honestly the movie isn't something to show in a history class. Still think the Longest Day is the best about D-Day.
