Kansas Lands Drake transfer Joseph Yesufu

Be ineresting to see if it works out for him. It certainly didn't help Moss when he transferred to Kansas.
Sure, except for getting to play for the #1 team in the nation, and getting more minutes than he did at Iowa in the process.

He got far less minutes, he averaged 17 minutes per game with Kansas and 24 with Iowa. His point production dropped as well from 11.1 to 6.5. I understand the move, but it didn't help out his NBA chances.

You may want to go back and check those minute numbers. I'm sure he obviously wanted to play in the NBA, but I'm guessing his real motivation was to play for a good team, and he was also probably pissed at Fran for benching him in the second half and crunch time every single game at Iowa.

Moss has connections at Bolingbrook HS (I believe a relative works there IIRC) and word of him entering the portal was known at BHS before he entered officially. I wonder if Moss actually helped facilitate this given Yesufu went to BHS.

You are right, I was reading it just ass backwards, but with that said, he certainly didn't get a huge boost in playing time.

Yeah, like the benching during an epic comeback vs Tenn in the tournament when Moss was playing extremely well and almost brought us back to win by himself in that last 5 minutes.

What if schools like Kansas had to reimburse Drake for the scholarship money they gave to the student athlete when kids leave for a year? That way it might pay to be a feeder program for a mid-major.

Seriously, this--or some form of it--could make a ton of sense.

There you go again, just throwing shit out about any program you don't like and is successful and making big assumptions about everything/anyone.

I have no skin in this game, but it is pretty clear Kansas and other Blue Bloods were paying players through Nike/Addidas. Bill Self is a cheater. . At the very least, Duke, Kansas, USC etc over the years have been hiring family members to coaching jobs/other university jobs as part of inducement for getting players.

That actually is a fantastic idea.

Don't really see the correlation. Moss simply wasn't all that. He filled a niche for KU but he was never going to parlay that into the NBA. He simply wasn't that good. Remains to be seen about this young man.

Yesufu is like a better shooting Joe T.

Stinks for Drake and it’s coaches ... This portal is a game-changer ... we’re going to see more and more of this and mid-tier schools will suffer when their “stars” experience success and then go “shopping” for a bigger offer.

It stinks for Drake? Never thought about that!

We have known the transfer portal was a game changer from the moment it was approved. Ever since the transfer portal started we knew that talent from mid majors and below could move on to "better" programs and "better" opportunities.

heck, even Iowa RECENTLY was looking at a Division II kid (Parker Fox) who is in the transfer portal.

Parker Fox has 2 years eligibility remaining.

What about the other way? Would Drake be on the hook for Ellingson time at Iowa? Which programs count?
I think in a case like Brady or upperclassman, many who have already met their degree requirements or are on pace, I see no need for that. My way of thinking would be that both parties have met their obligation at that point. Now a first or second year player maybe....

Agree with this. The grad transfer guys I’m fine with whatever. They’ve put in their time. Both Robbins and Yesefu were very lightly recruited. Drake being the best offer for both. I’m not going to piss and moan about it as DeVries has proven he’s really good at working the transfer portal in his favor as well, but it does suck when you take a kid that nobody else really wanted and they leave the moment things go their way. Such is life as a mid major.

Agreed. It will only let the rich get richer... which sucks

Darian DeVries is a heckofa coach. Just think of what they would have next year with Liam and Yesufu. The rest of the starters and Tucker DeVries?!?
They would be a badass team!

Which is unfortunate when you look at all the stars that have come from mid majors....Ja Morant, Steph Curry, even Obi Toppin from Dayton as last year's (fake news) POY.

Doesn't look like a game changer to me. Looks like the rich keep getting richer and the Drakes of the world end up in the shitter. How frustrating it must be to find, take a chance on a kid and develop talent that gets snatched by big time programs. It's like Pittsburgh Pirate baseball only worse

imagine if Drake had both Liam Robbins and Joseph Yesufu next season?

Fran was originally against the transfer portal for the reasons you describe; and he definitely thought that if a kid transferred, he should have to sit a year before being eligible

I get why everyone is lamenting the impact on the mid-majors. I do. But why is it that coaches can cash in with success at lower levels but players can't? Fran parlayed success at Siena into multiple millions per year at Iowa. Holtman had a nice gig at Butler, he is getting paid way more at OSU. Archie Miller, for his 4-year failure at Indiana, at least did get paid quite handsomely for making the jump from a mid-major. He should be rich for the rest of his life. None of those coaches had to sit out a year to coach. If they had buyouts, they weren't paid for by the coaches themselves but by the school they were going to.

But if a player is really good at a mid-major, he can't go to a larger school if he can do so? Again, I'm not staying it's a perfect situation or that I even agree with the no sit-out approach to transfers. But it's at least a bit more honest when everyone can do what's best for them, coaches and players. I don't think there is a right answer for controlling movement. It's not going to be reversed.

I think you've nailed it. This whole process lets the Kansas, Duke, etc, replace one-and-done players with proven talent from other colleges instead of relying on new high school recruits
