Keion Brooks

I imagine the school pitches go something like this:

Washington: "we'll offer you $25,000 to come play here!"
UCLA: "we'll offer you $50,000 to come play here!"
Arizona: "we'll offer you $75,000 to come play here!"
.
.
.
Iowa: "we'll give you a Pancheros gift card!!!"
AND $500 for good grades!

Video confirms that his comfort zone is the midrange. Can see why he was able to get a G league elite camp invite, but not an NBA combine invite. The pros probably see the shooting potential, but he has to break his habit of setting up just inside the 3 point line and needs to start making threes.

His rebounding numbers before Tshiebwe came and started gobbling up every one in sight were really good. Think he’ll be willing to do the dirty work.

And make you sit out a year!!

Zona and UCLA are barely recruiting him / seriously interested, yet they are still throwing him 75K without question. He listed them to try and leverage out Washington / Iowa. If Gary Barta has a pulse, he’ll do the right thing.
Unfortunately Gary Barta and ‘do the right thing’ rarely fit together.

Brooks is a player, though I’m not sure where Iowa will find him the 25+ mpg that he’s going to be looking for next year. He reminds me of Melsahn Basabe a little bit with that midrange game/athleticism, though a little undersized to be lining up against some of the Big Ten’s big men.

It looks like he has two years of eligibility though with a COVID year, so Fran’s pitch could easily be to come in and basically do what Kris did last year, then hand him over the reins as the 4 for his final season, where he would have a great opportunity to put up a ton of points in Fran’s system and boost his NBA stock.

More pessimistically, it could mean that Fran is less confident in Kris’ return, though I don’t believe that this is the case

I think we have a chance here…

2 questions:

1. How do you know Zona and UCLA are barely recruiting him?

2. What is Gary Barta supposed to do about it? Isn't it the role of greasy boosters to spearhead a collective? Or has it been the AD's at other schools rounding up the greasy boosters. I genuinely dont know

2. We have a plethora of boosters and well-pocketed alumni who are extremely eager to create legal slush funds for NIL opportunities. Unfortunately, Gary doesn't believe in this system (the same one that helped Miami land a stud transfer through 400K booster donation). I've said this before in here, but folks are really underestimating the dollars wanting to be poured out from a variety of avenues. I personally know boosters wanting to donate millions for recruits, but Gary won't even entertain the conversation.

1. Arizona and UCLA already have crowded rosters and can't promise him what Washington and Iowa can from a player-focus perspective. But, they like him enough to throw him a strong NIL package, develop him more, and then give him more reigns in 2023/24. From what I've heard, he isn't interested in that and wants to immediately play big minutes and be a top 2 option. We have a real shot here, but I'm afraid it'll come down to NIL, and we know how that goes.

On your first point, I'm definitely no Barta fan but he's probably not entertaining the conversation because an NIL collective can't be affiliated with the university, correct? Sounds like your donor buddies need to be organizing things on their own.

You're correct that the collectives must be separate and independent from the University, however, the AD/program needs to approve the fund and allow you to operate how you see-fit. Right now, Barta is not allowing that.

We're more than understanding of the laws and the structure and processes that need to take place.

If Kris does indeed return, perhaps.

In order for Iowa to be as competitive as we hope next season, most, if not all, of the following need to occur:

1. Josh O and/or Mulvey have to step up and contribute solid minutes.

2. Bowen and Ulis need to stabilize the point guard position.

3. PMac must elevate his game to the next level.

4. Sandfort has to step up and take over JBo’s role as a 3-pt specialist.

5. Perkins must continue to grow in his role as a scoring threat to complement Kris.

Those are kinda sorta put in order of importance, but if at least 3/5 happen I see Iowa in the NCAA tournament (again, assuming Kris is back). If 4/5 or all come to fruition, Iowa might have a special season.

good points. Fran has been given a lot of praise for player development; hopefully we continue to see it.

We have 11 scholarship players; Fran wants one more (a big). I see a lot of people commenting that Fran is handcuffed right now with Iowa not having an NIL Collective up and running. Fran can offer a lot to a big; but he does not have the NIL money that these other schools are offering.

I know the NCAA is trying to NOW enforce the rules regarding boosters but this NIL mess (and what's allowed and not allowed) needs to be cleaned up ASAP.

If true then that's obviously disappointing. Don't understand how Barta still has a job.

You really think a huge majority of coaches and ad aren't involved? That's naive..
No, I was just spitballing as to why Barta wasn't entertaining the conversation. Perhaps he wasn't publicly, but is trying to get something going behind closed doors. Not holding my breath on that though considering his public comments, and if what the poster I quoted was saying is true.

I can personally tell you with 110% confidence that that isn’t happening. Gary wrongfully believes the NCAA is going to clamp down on all of this and won’t touch a slush fund with a 100ft pole. I know of multiple scenarios where a business / person offered a significant amount of money to attract a number of recruits, all of whom were adamantly turned down. He simply doesn’t believe in nor agree with the current climate. I have many more things I could share about this POS but I’ll digress.

This makes me sad

Perhaps Barta feels as if the programs we are discussing are doing well enough without paying the players and to do so would just take donated funds away from some of his other projects. Unfortunately this is a shortsighted view of the situation and if he really does feel as though taking this solitary stance will hold our programs in good stead, he is gravely mistaken.

If anybody actually thought this could happen, he called the report he cut his list to those 4 school "fake news".

Iowa bball cannot have nice things. :(

FWIW Kentucky fans online are saying Iowa has no shot and that they are hearing he is likely UCLA bound.

Given the current NIL climate and Iowa's recruiting track record, people need to seriously check their expectations about 5 stars signing with Iowa.

What's funny about this whole thing is I've been snooping UCLA, Arizona, and Washington's message boards this whole weekend and barely anything has been discussed about him. One UCLA site has been saying they don't see it happening since he would likely not start there and another is saying they don't think they are actively recruiting anyone in the portal to not mess with team chemistry. Arizona is saying they aren't recruiting him. And typical Washington doesn't seem to even seen the report because their board has been a wasteland.
What I do know is Iowa has reached out, inquired, and is actively recruiting him. You may be right that NIL will be a factor--but I'd also think with a guy like this a long-term outlook on what program helps him get into the NBA is going to be the route he takes over the quick buck. He's competing at the G-League combine the next 2 days, so I would guess if he doesn't get asked up to the combine his recruitment will start ramping up later this week.

Last two posts are good examples of how much fans on message boards really know about what is going on with all of this portal stuff.

The Blueblood coaches were all involved in Addidas/Nike payola...yeah, there seems little doubt
that the university at some level has to participate in NIL process....Iowa is squeaky clean but
as long as Kenyon Murray is producing sons, I guess we are in good shape.

I watched him play this morning at the G League Camp--he is likely not on my short list to get a combine invite. Had 4 points on 1-6 shooting and 7 boards.

I don't think there is even an outside realistic shot of him getting drafted. Teams are looking for 3 & D players and while Keion is a very good defender, he's a very poor 3 point shooter currently. We will see what teams tell him--but number 1 needs to be improving his outside shot and I am not sure the G League is the best place for him to do that.

Makes it sound like it's NBA or G league. He is saying exactly what you would expect a player to say, it's the league or nothing. Don't think he's coming to Iowa unfortunately
