Kentucky is talking about CJ again

I've been thinking about the transfer portal for a while now and I've concluded that I think it is a very bad thing for college basketball. How can a coach or program plan ahead for recruiting, building a team concept or even build loyalty? Look at the center from Drake, he goes to Minny for one year then now Vandy. It's almost like AAU anymore. Something has to change. What was wrong with having athletes sit out a year? At least it made them think about their decision but still allowed them to leave if they really wanted to.

I agree with the loyalty comment. Unfortunately we are seeing a weakening in this country of such traits. I've noticed it in the business world you see it in kids these days and especially in the next generation of workers under the age of 30. Loyalty, duty, honor, integrity, service to others are starting to be things of the past sadly. Its all about me now to a lot of people.

In basketball expect to see a lot of transfers now for teams. Especially now that you can transfer once without having to sit out. There will be teams every year that rebuild off of veteran transfer players. Guarentee you will see these teams next year in the Final 4 that have 1-2 transfers starting for them. Teams like Duke and Kentucky will be able to pull in 5 star players every year along with an impact veteran transfer or 2 or 3 to help balance their teams out.

Holy sheet, this in caps, spades, and everything else. Our society is crumbling and this is part of it. You can throw "truth" in there as well.

I was reading an article about a young player who is bucking the trend, it’s actually kind of inspirational, wish we had kids with this type of mentality:

Link to article

“"I want to finish what I started here," Hudgins told ESPN. "I know the transfer portal is going nuts right now and everyone is giving me advice on what my next step should be. The grass might not be greener on the other side, but best of luck to everyone entering the portal. I hope it works out for them. My coach took a chance on me when not a lot of teams did. He believed in me and that's my reason for going back to try and win another national championship. I feel like if you're good enough, you can play wherever you want at the end of the day."

Exactly.

It destroying what makes college different from pro sports.

I’m a GOML guy on this. It’s just harder for me to care about and root for a bunch of mercs.

I think that’s just human nature.

On the other hand... it has been big business for the past 50 years. Maybe it’s just time to recognize it out in the open...

I don’t know.

I kind of agree.

In my MM pool we pay out to whoever drafted the “Ultimate Loser” team. That’s the team that, lost to the team, that lost to the team, etc that lost to the winner.

If UCLA had beaten Gonzaga (damn near did) & they would’ve lost to Baylor (no doubt they would have), Grand Canyon State would’ve been this year’s “Ultimate Loser.”

Grand Canyon State lost to Iowa, who lost Oregon, who lost to USC, who lost to Gonzaga, who lost to UCLA, who lost to Baylor. This would’ve been the scenario.

Georgetown ended up being the “Ultimate Loser.”

So basically Iowa beat arguably the worst team in the whole tourney. By 14 or whatever. Not a very impressive tourney showing by Iowa AT ALL.
Transitive property doesn’t apply to sports especially team sports.

This is just a horrible take.

I am trying to figure out why he’s wanting to transfer. I felt like, if healthy, he’d take all of Bohannon’s minutes. Maybe the rumor of Bohannon coming back is true? If so, I’d take Frederick over Bohannon.

He's rolling the dice and taking a chance he can be part of a contender next year. It may work out and it may not. I do know that if he's hurt most of next year or doesn't shoot well, Cal will tell him to move on. When you try to be friends with bad people some times it comes back to bite you.

We have a clue, they are clueless. He’s going to play for the Hawkeyes unless I’m wrong. I’ve been wrong once or twice in my life and admit it when I am but CJ leaving makes no sense so until he or Fran say something , CJ is staying a Hawkeye
Time to admit it. I was WRONG!!!!!! Again !!!!
I was a believer that when CJF said,” He was staying”, he was truthful . I’ll always fall for that. Once!
From now on though , anything I hear from CJF , I will not believe without proof. No excuse will suffice. I’m saddened , not that he’s leaving. In the end it’s his life, he should decide what’s best for himself and live with his decision. A friend once told me , something I’ve tried to live by and that’s “ Be responsible for your own actions “. I fell for someone lying. I am now reacting to my saying I believed him. I was wrong for doing so and I’m sorry for that.

Hunter is Joe Fredrick's next door neighbor and he was never referring to CJ. This was in reference to UK's incoming recruiting class
It sounds like you might know CJ. I’d love it if you’d ask him why the long delay between when this was all first rumored and now. I don’t personally care at all about the tampering charges that lots of our fans are upset about. To me it doesn’t really feel like CJ needed to be tampered with. Obviously I know nothing but I get the sense that Kentucky was always his dream school and now he’s good enough to play there so good for him. But judging by Fran’s comments and Patrick’s tweet they must have been asking CJ about the rumors and he obviously denied them until now. The only thing I can think of is he must have been waiting until he knew for sure he had a spot at Kentucky before leaving. But if he was willing to walk on at Iowa until a spot opened up I don’t know why he wouldn’t do the same thing at Kentucky.

My God some people are infinitely stupid. If Perkins is better than CJ, then why couldn't he get minutes over a CJ that was playing hurt and a shell of himself?

A healthy CJ is a heck of a ball-player. How does someone go from the best defender on the team as a freshman, to a bad defender as a sophomore? How does someone go from shooting close to 50% 3balls and quite clutch, to afraid to even attempt a shot? His shot at the end of last season had no lift and didn't even look the same as his normal shot. How does someone have a sweet mid-range pull-up completely disappear from his game? It's called, the man was playing HURT. I don't know how that could be any more obvious.

Sure, without knowing personal specifics, I think this is a bullshit move by CJ. But who knows what happened. I know CJ showed a hell of a lot of loyalty signing with Iowa without a scholarship in the first place. So it's unfortunate that something has changed his mind.

But please get real people. CJ was not only better than his replacements (DUH), but his shooting was desperately needed for next season's roster. And no, Iowa's defense was at no point better without him. Please change your mind and stay, CJ. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Next season's squad could be a lot of fun with you a part of it.

To further call out the clueless, Iowa's defense will not be great next season just because there will be better athletes on the court. At no point will Iowa ever have a great defense until the coach teaches it properly. And even more importantly, until the coach values and emphasizes it
Yeah I’m all for positively but it’s a Bill of goods right now.. this team has future potential for sure but next year could be another 14-19 if not worse

Completely disagree with this. I’m in my 40s so I don’t fit the demographic, however I hire and manage many young kids in lower 20s. Many are fabulous workers and really seem to have their eyes open. They don’t own the business world or the company that hired them loyalty as companies continually setup systems to under pay their workers. They have recognized this and are more entrepreneurial and investment savvy than many generations in the past.

Honestly I see college basketball the same way. Some transfer for more minutes, some transfer to their dream team, others for a better education. A LOI signed at 17/18 should not permit you from pursuing dreams.

we don’t know the behind curtain details but obviously CJ was not happy with the situation, Fran bares some responsibility. If you had a major goal of playing in/beyond at sweet sixteen Iowa is a low probability bet.

It's true that it's CJ's life to do what he wants. It's also true that I don't have to like that he is transferring. I've always hated the argument I have to blindly support the players.. see Pierre Pierce. The idea I have to support an NFL player while he is holding out has always been absurd to me. Can chase your money I only want you to catch TDs, if you aren't catching TDs I don't wish you ill will but I don't care.
What is the most annoying about the portal is that I have no faith that Fran has the ability/the will to use the portal to significantly improve Iowa. See low hanging fruit from the Dakota's. I hope I'm wrong.

Looking at Kent roster it seems as if they only have 1 senior with 3 top 40 recruits coming in....and have 3 returning shooting guards who are frosh and a sophomore.....they are all three 6'6'' ....will CJ get much PT.?

Certainly a huge risk for him. If he gets injured again he could be permanently buried on the bench. That said they just need him to be a setup sharp shooter. They have so many players that can get to the hoop. Always room for. 50 percent 3pt shooter.

Ill be more annoyed if he develops a killer instinct. He was so passive in his time at Iowa. With a team like Kentucky he should be shooting if even remotely open as they have athletes to get O boards.

Your breakdown means absolutely nothing.

I agree it’s gotten out of control, although in theory I still don’t mind the onetime free transfer rule, especially if the coach leaves. I’ve never understand why a coach can leave without penalty, but players can’t.

Personally, don't care at all if a player is unhappy at his school and wants to leave. Homesick, injuries, coaches leaving, friends leaving, PT, area isn't something you thought it would be, the list goes on and on. Players should be allowed to leave and move on to do what's best for them. It's how you leave that matters!

Coaches change teams all the time. Should they have to sit out a year as well? We might not like the transfers, but at least we end up with players who want to be where they are. The old bait and switch of kissing the butt of recruits and then being a asshole as a coach are gone. Coaches will have to create an environment where kids want to stick around.

Is he going to Kentucky a sure thing? Maybe hes going closer to home....Join Nunge at Xavier? They offered him coming out of high school. Or maybe close to home at Louisville? It might be him just not being happy at Iowa and wanting out.

I’m worried about Fran. Gonna be some veins-a-poppin’ next season.
Didn’t many think the same when Cook left, Moss and Dailey transferred?

I’m excited to see what the young ones can do. I really don’t want to see Connor getting more than 20 minutes a game though.

Cook? Sure.

Frederick was expected to (and did) take Moss' minutes. While I would have liked him back, his departure didn't hurt us that badly.

Dailey was a defender, and that's about it.

But now we're losing

Garza
Nunge
Bohannon
Fredrick
And likely Wieskamp

While I don't think it's the beginning of some dark age like some, I do think next year is gonna be rough, especially offensively.

It most likely will be a transition year. My point was new rosters bring new surprises.

I wouldn’t hate so much on the younger generation and loyalty....many of them grew up watching companies their parents had worked hard at for years dump them at their earliest convenience.

the loyalty ship in the US shipped out a long while ago....only person going to look out for #1 is yourself....and it appears these kids have learned that lesson.

I had wished Nunge and the others leaving well because it made sense for them and they left on good terms from all we've heard.

This CJ thing doesn't make sense considering he figured to be a big part of the team next year. It stinks, not just in the feel bad for ourselves part, but also seems underhanded and potentially tampering.

Unfortunately this seems to be the new reality of the transfer portal and immediate eligibility. The rich get richer.

i know some people will say once a
Hawkeye always a Hawkeye when players leave and wish they luck and all that. I say case by case. You can say it to someone like nunge or even Pemsl who wasn’t going to barely play with history of injuries. but with guys like CJ or Moss who are starters and up and leave like they did no way Fing way.

I'm 25 years old and a HS teacher and coach. While I always told myself I'd never want to be the cynical old guy who complains about the younger generation, I do have to agree that my generation and younger have trouble grasping the concept of long-term payoff. We live in an age and culture of instant-gratification, where if people can't get exactly what they want exactly when they want it, then they decide it's not worth the effort.
