Kerkvliet Reopens Recruiting

I hope Brands has the same philosophy as the one shared by this group when it comes to recruiting.

I like PSU winning all the championships....

Really? When you recruit over the person, and that person doesn’t leave the program, it’s a disaster for recruiting financially speaking Having Murin, Turk, Happel and Renteria may very well cost us Abe Assad. So, you might want to rethink how over-recruiting wins titles. If PSU gets Kerk and Neville’s doesn’t leave - that should hurt them in recruiting down the road (but not the slush fund of course).

I’m just trying to figure out what the goalposts are. The only ones I see is Brands does it = good, Cael does it = bad. Just want someone who thinks its bad to explain why.
The answer has been provided, if you're not smart enough to see who and where, that's on you.

Why can't you all just say it like it is instead of this politically correct term, "Recruiting over him."

This would probable help to answer the lil peanut guys questions.

IF F*** state gets this guy, they basically SCREW Nevilliesus!!! AND THAT IS what it means to recruit over him you dumb fool!!!

There is only 1 starter and Heavy Weights do not have the options in most cases to move up or down like the other weights might be able to.

So bring in one "top"(i.e. VERY DARN GOOD) kid to fill the weight and then bringing in another who may be/is a little better SCREWS for the most part the kid who committed to you 1st.

I have never seen this before at HVY probable for a few reasons. 1) MONEY, 2) lack of quality guys at the weight dictates that it is almost impossible to do. 3) It would seem like a D*ck move by any coach.

Everyone know that F*** ST. is playing some kind of funNY games with recruiting. So money does not appear to be an issue. There is an uptick in quality Hvy's so there goes number2. We all know that they are going to pull whatever moves they need to to win.

They think this is great because maybe they are use to crap pro sports and all the sh*t that takes place within it.

Many here feel it is BS because this is college sports and there should be some ethics, morels, values, and rules followed!

I for one could care less!!! Let them keep playing their BS games. It will come back at them soon!!! and We will take them out regardless!!!

How many times are you going to ask the same question?

It's like pornography, it's hard to define but you know it when you see it.

From a parents point of view, bring in all the talent you can. I don’t care if it’s my kids weight, if you can’t win to get into the lineup? You
Can’t win national and world titles. That’s the mindset. Being the best means you don’t worry about who is behind you or in front. You get it done. Don’t come to these programs if someone has to promise you a spot.

Thanks for weighing in, Mr. Brooks. I think most guys at this level come in believing that they will earn the spot and be a champion -- there just isn't any other option, and believing less than that is the first step toward not reaching one's goals.

Where I believe there might be an exception -- for some -- is when bringing in another guy reduces your scholly opportunity. But in the end, that's life, and people just have to deal with it. They can stay or go elsewhere. And fans can b**ch or just accept it is an inherent part of competition.

I think it is the stories of other types of promises that a lot of people have been hearing that they have problems with. If true some of these coaches are using them to tip the scales and even make situations like this feasible without hamstringing their programs.

I for one think every program should be recruiting to the max at all times. Recruiting is always going to be a fluid situation year around. Program needs are fluid on a yearly basis. Obliviously TNT think the same way with the 2 most recent transfers.

Especially now that the transfer rules have been relaxed. If recruiting wasn't already a 24-7 job for most coaches, it will almost certainly have to be, now. The need for a Plan B at every weight becomes much more urgent. Or even a Plan C. Stockpiling talent is paramount if you are to be a perennial power.

Let's say Darian Cruz was a Hawkeye and before signing day last year, Brands got a call from Spencer Lee saying he would do anything possible to become a Hawkeye. If Tom Brands knew Spencer was better than Cruz, he takes Spencer Lee or he's not doing his job.

This whining about CS recruiting over wrestlers is nothing more than sour grapes. Its literally part of the game and happens in every college sport.

Absolutely no talk or funny money. 100% by the book at PSU. Great staff and the kids are awesome. I’m a big Iowa fan, can’t love wrestling without appreciating the Hawks. The rivilry is great for the sport and keeps the fans engaged. We embrace competition in our house. Always have!

Lol! You guys are great though! I read all the wise cracks and banter on both forums and I love it. I can’t wait to fly to Iowa and watch a dual! At the end of the day we are raising men and teaching the values they will need in life. Great programs both! Love the sport!! Also, Greg’s situation changed, he needs to look long term. Very few wrestlers can make a living in this sport. He is now in that less than 1% and Okie State isn’t really in that race.

That’s great news.

You seem like a great fan and an ambassador for the sport of wrestling. I've been one to often wonder how PSU funds so many top tier recruits, and if it's all being done legit, that's quite an accomplishment. Best of luck to your son.

Seriously, this statement would actually kind of give credence to the promises I heard were given to other kids in his son’s class.

Cause what other living than a college degree would even be discussed with Greg or his parents? A coaching job afterwards? Guaranteed payment from the wrestling club associated with the program?

And wouldn’t Greg have his pick of the litter these of top assistant coaching jobs and or clubs if he was a hot commodity out of college even if he wrestled at osu? This is how most people make a living with this sport.

Lol! You guys are great though! . . .

Full disclosure (just to avoid any perception of misrepresentation) -- I'm a PSU guy. Hence, my butt-kissery.

Honestly, though, I appreciate your level-headed posts. Not common among the parent posters on these forums.

Totally agree. All this talk about "recruiting over" is just talk. I have no problem in bringing in the best, and having the best wrestle as determined by wrestle-offs. What a parent does not want is bait and switch, where a coach promises one thing, either rightly or wrongly, and then does something else that seems unfair. Parents want fair treatment from coaches.
I still have a problem with comparing Cass/Costello to whatever is going on with Kerk. I also have problem with trying to turn guys that have already made commitments.

RTCs have to have the assets/income to pay these athletes once they turn pro, nothing against Okie State, but how many RTC pros do they have? For a young wrestler coming up, they look at the current situation. Like any college graduate, you look at who can employ you. These World Team athletes are looking at a 10-15 year plan if they can. Ill be up front with you, PSU has never said anything to us about the RTC or post Penn State, however some schools did. Hmmm? PSU is clean. Everything gets run by their compliance. “ If you build it? They will come” Iowa is close, the pieces are falling into place. I’m rooting for Iowa to flourish! There is no greatness with opposition! Ray Leonard had Hagler, Hearns and Duran. We need great competition and engaging rivalries for our sport to sell/grow. Like I said I’m a fan!

Very interesting topic and a lot of good points. Generally, the recruiting over doesn't bother me at all. You get what you earn. There are no guarantees to a spot. All coaches say in some manner to a recruit "you are our guy." They probably don't say too often, "you are our guy, guaranteed to start all 4 years and we'll never recruit anybody at your weight until your eligibility is complete." The tough part is if the recruit is told you are the guy and we aren't recruiting anybody else this year at your weight and the coaches do recruit that weight and bring in somebody better late in the game when maybe the first guy could have gone someplace else with a better scholly situation. I still think you earn your spot and if wrestlers believe a coach who promises a spot that is pretty naive in my opinion. But purposefully misleading a kid who has other opportunities especially if money is a big issue just kind of smells a little to me. But in fairness to coaches kids can always flip in the process too when maybe coaches have backed off other recruits cause they thought they had their guy. See Teasdale.

Again great news about PSU. I hope everything I have heard has just been stories and they are running a clean program. Cause I would hate to see coaches abuse the RTC system and get them shut down.
